Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax chico was described by Jorge Casciotta and Adriana Almirón in 2004. The type locality given in the original description is the Río de Zora along route 34 in the Río San Francisco basin, Jujuy Province, northwestern Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid name as Astyanax chico Casciotta & Almirón, 2004, and GBIF records confirm its placement in the family Characidae.
Recent molecular phylogenetic work has prompted considerable rearrangement within the broadly defined Astyanax, and the IUCN assessment notes that A. chico has been referred to as Psalidodon chico in some literature following the recognition of segregate genera within the Stevardiinae and allied lineages. The Catalog of Fishes (the governing authority for valid names on this site) treats the combination Astyanax chico as valid; the alternative placement in Psalidodon or Acestrorhamphidae reflects the ongoing instability in characid higher classification. Until the Catalog registers a formal transfer, the original combination is used here.
Morphology
Astyanax chico is a small, fusiform characin with the typical body plan of the genus: a moderately compressed, silvery body, a single dorsal fin, and an adipose fin. Specific size data are sparse in the available literature; as a small Andean foothill Astyanax it is likely similar to related species in the 2–3 in standard length range, though no precise maximum length figure has been confirmed from published sources for this species.
Coloration in preserved material and in life follows the pattern common to small upland Astyanax: a silvery to yellowish-white lateral field, a narrow dark lateral stripe running from behind the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, and a dark blotch at the caudal base. The eye is relatively large. No significant external sexual dimorphism has been documented in the literature available for this species.
Habitat
The Río San Francisco system where Astyanax chico occurs is a tributary of the upper Pilcomayo and ultimately the Paraguay–Paraná drainage, flowing through the Yungas transition zone — the subtropical cloud-forest belt on the eastern Andean slopes of Jujuy Province at low to mid elevations. The habitat is characterised by clear to lightly turbid, swift-flowing streams with gravel and cobble substrates, riparian gallery forest, and marked seasonality in flow driven by Andean wet seasons.
Water conditions in Andean foothill rivers of this type are generally cool to warm depending on elevation and season, typically soft to moderately hard with near-neutral pH reflecting the mixed igneous and sedimentary catchment geology. The IUCN assessment, citing criterion B, records a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, consistent with a species confined to a single small river basin rather than distributed across a broad drainage system.
Feeding
Astyanax species from Andean foothill streams are generally opportunistic omnivores, consuming small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, plant material, and detritus. The feeding ecology of A. chico specifically has not been published in the sources available, but its morphology — a small, generalised characin with robust dentition typical of Astyanax — is consistent with this omnivorous guild.
In the aquarium, close relatives accept a wide range of prepared foods including quality flake, micro-pellets, and crushed dried foods, readily supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worms. A varied diet supports good condition and natural coloration.
Mating
No specific reproductive behaviour studies have been published for Astyanax chico, and the species has not been documented in the aquarium hobby in any material way. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus broadly, it is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner that breeds in flowing or still water among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrates, releasing adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs with no subsequent parental care.
Male Astyanax in related species typically pursue females during spawning and may show slight colour intensification during courtship, but no formal secondary sexual characters or courtship displays have been described for this species in the accessible literature.
Breeding
Astyanax chico has not been reported in cultivation, and no captive breeding records are available in the literature reviewed for this article. By analogy with well-studied small Astyanax species, breeding in captivity would be expected to follow the standard characin pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with adhesive eggs that hatch within 24–72 hours depending on temperature, and tiny free-swimming fry requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
Given its IUCN Vulnerable status and restricted range, A. chico is not available in the aquarium trade and captive breeding has no documented history. If the species were ever brought into cultivation for conservation purposes, the standard protocols for small stream-dwelling Astyanax would provide a useful starting framework.
In the aquarium
Astyanax chico is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is not available to aquarists through normal hobby channels. It is an endemic wild species of conservation concern, and its care requirements in captivity are unknown from firsthand account.
Should the species ever become available through legitimate conservation breeding programmes, the husbandry of other small, upland South American characins would provide a reasonable guide: a well-oxygenated tank with moderate flow, cool to warm temperatures reflecting the Andean foothill origin, soft to moderately hard near-neutral water, fine-leaved planting, and a varied diet of prepared and live or frozen invertebrate foods. It would be expected to be a peaceful schooling species suited to a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates.
Conservation
Astyanax chico was assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List in 2020 under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). These criteria indicate a restricted extent of occurrence (B1) and a restricted area of occupancy (B2), both with observed or inferred decline in the quality of habitat (subcriterion iii). The species' entire known range lies within a single river basin — the Río San Francisco system of Jujuy Province, Argentina — leaving it with no buffer against local habitat loss.
The Yungas transition zone in northwestern Argentina faces ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, sugarcane cultivation in the lower valleys, deforestation, water extraction for irrigation, and altered hydrology. These threats are well documented for the region and affect stream-dwelling fishes broadly. The species is not known from the aquarium trade, so collecting pressure is not a current threat; the primary risk is in situ habitat degradation. Conservation of riparian corridors and stream-flow integrity in the upper Pilcomayo tributaries of Jujuy Province is the key requirement for the survival of this and other endemic fishes of the basin.
