Astyanax clavitaeniatus is a small characid tetra described by Garutti in 2003 from South American freshwaters. Like the majority of regional Astyanax species, it remains little known outside specialist ichthyological literature, with no established common name and a narrow documented range. It belongs to one of the most species-rich genera in the Neotropics — a group whose members inhabit virtually every river basin from northern Mexico to Patagonia — and shares the family's characteristic compressed, silvery body and small, adipose-bearing dorsal profile.

Astyanax clavitaeniatus was formally described by Garutti in 2003. The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the largest and most taxonomically challenging in the family Characidae, encompassing several hundred valid species across the Neotropics. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for valid names within the group; the species epithet clavitaeniatus has not been synonymised under a prior name.

The specific epithet clavitaeniatus is a compound Latin adjective meaning roughly 'club-striped' or 'band-marked with a club-like pattern', from clava (club or staff) and taeniatus (banded or striped), likely referring to a diagnostic lateral band or stripe pattern seen on the type material. Data on the precise type locality and type repository are contained in the original description (Garutti 2003) but full bibliographic details are not reproduced here.

Astyanax sits within the subfamily Stethaprioninae in some classifications and has historically been treated under Characinae in older literature; the broader systematics of the Characidae have undergone repeated revision, and the placement of many regional species remains in flux. Astyanax species in these drainages typically occupy a wide depth range from near-surface to mid-water and are tolerant of seasonal fluctuations in water chemistry associated with the South American wet–dry cycle. Feeding

Mating

Breeding biology can be inferred from closely related congeners, which are among the more straightforward characids to spawn: a conditioned pair or small group released into a densely planted or mop-equipped aquarium with slightly cooler, soft-to-moderately-hard water will spawn in the early morning, scattering small, non-adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs among fine vegetation or falling to the substrate.

Eggs typically hatch within 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures. Adults show no parental care and must be separated from eggs immediately after spawning to prevent consumption. The larvae are small and require fine first foods — rotifers or infusoria — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Small to medium Astyanax are active, schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more in well-filtered, moderately planted aquaria. They tolerate a broad range of water conditions but do best in slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard water at 72–82 °F, mimicking their South American stream origin. A long tank with open swimming space, some structure, and dim or diffused lighting suits the genus well. Tankmates should be similarly sized; Astyanax will fin-nip long-finned species and may predate very small fish.

Conservation

Astyanax clavitaeniatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Many regionally described South American tetra species — particularly those known only from the type series or a restricted drainage — have not yet been evaluated, a gap that reflects the pace of taxonomic discovery in the Neotropics relative to the resources available for systematic conservation assessment.

Without distribution data or population trend information in the secondary literature, it is not possible to characterise the species' conservation status beyond 'Not Evaluated'. If it is endemic to a single river or sub-catchment in the Paraná system, it may be exposed to the habitat degradation, channelisation, and agricultural run-off that affect much of that basin; equally, if it is widespread across multiple drainages, pressures may be lower.
