Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax courensis was formally described by Vinicius A. Bertaco, Tiago P. Carvalho, and Fernando C. Jerep in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, issue 2, pages 265–275, 2010), based on specimens collected from the rio dos Couros in Goiás State, Brazil. The type locality is a tributary of the rio Tocantinzinho in the upper rio Tocantins drainage, near Alto Paraíso de Goiás on the Chapada dos Veadeiros plateau. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax courensis Bertaco, Carvalho & Jerep, 2010.
The species is placed within the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, a broadly distributed group of small, morphologically similar characids found across highland stream systems of central and eastern South America. Membership in this complex means that external differentiation from related forms requires careful meristic and morphometric examination; the ecological and geographic context of the collection site is often as diagnostic as body proportions alone. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised.
Morphology
Astyanax courensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, placing it at the smaller end of the genus but within typical range for members of the scabripinnis complex. Like its congeners it is a compressed, fusiform-bodied tetra with the family's characteristic adipose fin, a forked caudal fin, and a complete lateral line. Detailed meristic and morphometric data are given in the original description; external features that separate it from syntopic and related species are documented there.
No information on sexual colour differences or body-depth variation between sexes has been published beyond what appears in the type series examination. The species was collected alongside Characidium stigmosum, Characidium aff. zebra, Gymnotocinclus anosteos, and a Trichomycterus catfish at its type locality, indicating it inhabits clear, well-oxygenated rocky headwater streams alongside other rheophilic or generalised stream-dwelling species.
Habitat
The type locality of Astyanax courensis is the rio dos Couros, a tributary of the rio Tocantinzinho in the upper rio Tocantins basin, Goiás State, Brazil (approximately 14°S–15°S, 47°W–48°W). The site lies at roughly 1,443 ft elevation on the Chapada dos Veadeiros, a high-altitude cerrado plateau known for its clear-water streams over quartzite and sandstone substrates. At the collection point the stream was approximately 33–49 ft wide and 5 ft deep, with a stony to rocky bottom with patches of mud, moderate riparian vegetation, and clear water.
The species is currently known only from this type locality; no additional collection records expanding its range have been published. It occupies pelagic to near-surface water (depth range 0–7 ft) in a tropical regime roughly between 14°S and 15°S latitude. The highland location, clear water, and rocky substrate are consistent with conditions across the scabripinnis complex more broadly, which tends to favour pristine, fast-flowing or clear headwater environments rather than turbid lowland rivers.
Feeding
Stomach contents of specimens examined in the original description revealed a diet dominated by aquatic invertebrates: larvae of Plecoptera (stoneflies), Trichoptera (caddisflies), and Chironomidae (midges, order Diptera), together with other insects and plant matter. This profile is typical of a drift-feeding insectivore exploiting the invertebrate production of a clear highland stream, and is consistent with the feeding ecology described for other members of the scabripinnis complex in similar habitats. The trophic level is recorded as 3.0 ± 0.4 by FishBase, placing it as a primary carnivore with some omnivorous intake.
No aquarium feeding observations have been published. Based on its natural diet, it would be expected to accept a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods — chironomid larvae, daphnia, small crustaceans — along with quality dry foods in a captive setting, though it has not been established in the hobby.
Mating
No observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax courensis have been published. Members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex generally reproduce as egg-scattering open spawners: males pursue females during a brief courtship, with no territory establishment or pair bonding, and eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or deposited over substrate without any sustained display rituals.
As in the genus broadly, sexual dimorphism in spawning colouration or fin extension is not pronounced, and gravid females are identifiable primarily by a fuller abdomen. The highland stream environment at the type locality — clear, well-oxygenated, relatively cool water over rocky substrate with moderate vegetation — represents the conditions under which natural spawning would occur, though no direct field observations have been recorded for this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Astyanax courensis exist in the published or hobby literature. Extrapolating from the scabripinnis complex and Astyanax generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer producing adhesive eggs that settle among fine-leaved plants or along substrate; parental care is absent, which is the norm throughout the genus. Egg counts, incubation duration, and larval development data are not available.
Given the species' highland origin and the clear, cool-to-moderate water temperatures of its type locality, captive breeding attempts (were they to be made) would likely benefit from slightly cooler water than is typical for lowland tetras, good oxygenation, and the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops. Data sparse — this species has not been established in the aquarium hobby, and no specialist breeding literature exists beyond what is inferred from the broader genus.
In the aquarium
Astyanax courensis does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry literature exists for it. The species is known from a single highland stream in a restricted plateau region of central Brazil, and specimens are unlikely to be encountered in the trade. Any account of its aquarium requirements must therefore be inferred from the ecology of its type locality and the known husbandry of its congeners in the scabripinnis complex.
Based on type-locality data — clear, rocky, well-oxygenated water at approximately 1,443 ft elevation in central Brazil — the species would be expected to prefer cooler temperatures than typical lowland characids, good water quality, moderate current, and a substrate that includes rocky or sandy areas. As a small schooling tetra in a genus of generally peaceful, sociable fish, it would likely do best in a species group of six or more individuals in a planted aquarium with open swimming space. Data sparse; all husbandry notes here are inferred rather than observed.
Conservation
Astyanax courensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018 (version 2025-2). Despite this status, the species is currently known only from a single type locality — the rio dos Couros on the Chapada dos Veadeiros plateau — and no additional populations have been documented. A restricted, single-locality distribution is inherently vulnerable, even when the habitat appears intact at the time of assessment.
The Chapada dos Veadeiros is a protected area (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, expanded in 2017), which affords some habitat security to the streams within its boundaries. The clear, quartzite-filtered headwater streams of the plateau are sensitive to changes in land use, sedimentation, and water abstraction in the surrounding cerrado. The species' long-term security depends substantially on the continued integrity of this protected area and the catchment hydrology feeding its highland streams.
