Astyanax dissensus is a small characid from the laguna dos Patos system and río Uruguay drainage of southern Brazil and Argentina, described in 2013 as one of three new Astyanax species and set apart by a single diagnostic trait that is unique within the genus: one heptacuspid maxillary tooth. The species belongs to a broad southerly radiation of Astyanax that tolerates the subtropical conditions of the Pampas watershed, and its range has since been confirmed to extend into the province of Corrientes, Argentina — making it one of the few Astyanax recorded in Argentine Mesopotamia. It is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax dissensus was formally described by Lucena and Thofehrn in 2013 in a paper treating three new Astyanax from southern South America. The type series was taken from the laguna dos Patos basin and the río Uruguay drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax dissensus Lucena & Thofehrn, 2013. Some recent checklists place the species in the resurrected genus Psalidodon (following Terán et al. 2020, who revised generic limits across southern Astyanax), where it appears as Psalidodon dissensus; however, the IUCN and FishBase continue to use Astyanax dissensus, and that is the form followed here.

The specific epithet is derived from the Latin dissensus, meaning disagreement or dissent, in reference to the diagnostic heptacuspid maxillary tooth — a cusp count that disagrees with the pentacuspid or hexacuspid condition found in virtually all other members of the genus. This single meristic feature, unusual enough to be recorded as unique for Astyanax at the time of description, forms the backbone of the species diagnosis alongside body proportions and the arrangement of humeral and caudal spots.

Morphology

Astyanax dissensus reaches a maximum recorded total length of 5 in, making it a medium-sized member of the genus. Body depth falls between 37.2 and 44.2 percent of standard length, giving the fish a moderately deep, laterally compressed profile typical of Astyanax. Head length is 22.7 to 27.3 percent of standard length. The dorsal fin carries 10 to 11 soft rays; the anal fin is notably long, bearing 27 to 33 soft rays, which is consistent with the broadly configured anal fins seen in many southern South American Astyanax.

The colour pattern features two humeral spots — a vertically elongated anterior spot and a smaller posterior one — and a conspicuous dark caudal spot at the base of the caudal fin. Overall body colouration is silvery, consistent with riverine characids of the Paraná–Uruguay system. The single heptacuspid maxillary tooth remains the primary diagnostic character. Males are distinguished from females by the presence of small hooks on the anal-fin rays, a feature shared with many related species and used in spawning behaviour.

Habitat

Astyanax dissensus inhabits subtropical freshwater environments of the southern Atlantic slope of South America. Its known range covers the laguna dos Patos system and the río Uruguay drainage of southern Brazil, with at least one confirmed occurrence record from the Uruguay River at Yapeyú, in the province of Corrientes, Argentina — the first record for that country, documented by Terán et al. in 2016. The species is therefore known from both sides of the Brazilian–Argentine border along the middle Uruguay.

The laguna dos Patos system is the largest coastal lagoon complex in South America, draining a broad lowland catchment in Rio Grande do Sul. Water conditions in the río Uruguay drainage at these latitudes are cool to warm depending on season, with significant thermal variation across the year — a hallmark of subtropical rather than equatorial fish fauna. The species tolerates a broad temperature range appropriate to the Pampas zone and occupies slower or lentic reaches alongside faster river habitats typical of the Uruguay corridor.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Astyanax dissensus has been published, but its feeding ecology can be inferred from close relatives in the laguna dos Patos and Uruguay systems. Southern Astyanax are generally opportunistic omnivores, taking aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, small arthropods, plant material, algal filaments, and occasional small fish depending on local availability and season. The genus is notable for dietary flexibility, which is one reason it has colonised such a broad range of South American freshwater habitats.

In the aquarium the species will accept the full range of foods suitable for similarly sized characids: quality dried flake and pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp, and some vegetable supplement. Feeding variety supports good condition and, in males, the vigorous fin-hooking behaviour that appears during spawning interactions.

Mating

Astyanax dissensus is an egg-scattering characid with no parental care, which is the ancestral and near-universal condition in the genus. Males carry hooks on the anal-fin rays — small, recurved bony projections that develop on mature individuals and are thought to facilitate contact or positioning with females during spawning. This feature is shared by many southern South American Astyanax and has been interpreted as an adaptation to the open-water or plant-associated spawning typical of the clade.

Spawning is presumed to occur over fine-leaved vegetation or open substrate in flowing or still water, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered and left unguarded. Specific courtship descriptions for this species have not been published, but the anal-fin hooks on males are consistent with the brief, high-contact spawning rushes observed in related taxa.

Breeding

No captive breeding account specific to Astyanax dissensus has been published. Based on the biology of closely related southern Astyanax, the species is expected to be a straightforward egg-scatterer in the aquarium: conditioned adults can be induced to spawn over fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, depositing small adhesive eggs that the adults will subsequently eat if given the opportunity. Separating eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing vessel is standard practice.

At the subtropical temperatures appropriate to the species — roughly the low-to-mid 20s Celsius — eggs of related taxa typically hatch within 24 to 48 hours. Fry are small and require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The species has not entered the mainstream ornamental trade and captive-breeding documentation remains sparse.

In the aquarium

Astyanax dissensus is not an established aquarium species and is rarely, if ever, available in the hobby trade. It lacks common names and has not been the subject of hobbyist husbandry guides. Its care requirements can be extrapolated from the broader southern Astyanax complex: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming space, some plant cover for refuge, and water conditions reflecting the subtropical laguna dos Patos and Uruguay River system — moderate temperatures in the range of approximately 64–79 °F, near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate hardness consistent with the mixed geology of its home drainage.

Astyanax species in general are active, schooling fish that do best in groups, are hardy and adaptable, and coexist well with other similarly sized, peaceful community fish. If Astyanax dissensus were to become available, it could reasonably be kept in the manner of other southern Astyanax: shoaling groups in a planted community, fed a varied omnivore diet, with a temperature cycle that allows seasonal cooling if breeding is intended. Its modest maximum size of around 4.5 in TL would suit a tank of 39.5 in or more in length.

Conservation

Astyanax dissensus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2021. This reflects the species' occurrence across the large laguna dos Patos and río Uruguay systems — extensive drainages that support substantial habitat area — with no evidence of rapid population decline. The extension of its range into Argentina, confirmed in 2016, further supports the view that the species is more widely distributed than the original description indicated.

The laguna dos Patos watershed and the middle Uruguay River corridor face ongoing pressures from agriculture, water extraction, and basin modification, but these are diffuse threats across very large catchments rather than threats specific to this species. As a member of a highly adaptable and ecologically flexible genus, Astyanax dissensus is not considered at elevated risk at this time. It is not known to be collected for the ornamental trade in significant numbers.
