Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax dorioni was originally described by Donn Eric Rosen in 1970 under the genus Bramocharax. The species was subsequently reassigned to Astyanax in Juan J. Schmitter-Soto's comprehensive 2017 revision of the genus across Central and North America, published in the Journal of Natural History; the transfer is listed as Astyanax dorioni (Rosen, 1970) comb. nov. in that work, and the parenthetical authority reflects the name's origin in a different genus.
Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes in the Americas. It is a sprawling, ecologically diverse genus with dozens of described species distributed from the southwestern United States through Central America and across tropical South America. The Central American representatives form a particularly complex assemblage — the Schmitter-Soto revision was necessary precisely because this group had accumulated a tangle of synonymies, undescribed species, and uncertain assignments. The type locality for A. dorioni lies in the Usumacinta River basin of Central America, a drainage shared between Guatemala and Mexico.

Morphology
Astyanax dorioni reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 7.5 in, making it a notably large member of the genus — most Astyanax species are considerably smaller. Standard length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the caudal peduncle, excluding the tail fin, so total length in life would be somewhat greater.
Like other Astyanax, it is a laterally compressed, silvery-bodied fish with the characteristic Characidae adipose fin situated behind the dorsal and before the caudal. Beyond size and the diagnostic characters used in the Schmitter-Soto revision, published morphological detail specific to this species is sparse in readily accessible literature; detailed meristic and morphometric data are best sought in the original description and the 2017 revision itself.
Habitat
Astyanax dorioni is documented from the Usumacinta River basin of Central America, with confirmed records from the Río San Pedro and Río La Pasión in Guatemala — two major tributaries of the broader Usumacinta system. The Usumacinta is the largest river of Mesoamerica, draining a vast area of the Maya highlands and lowlands before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. The tributaries where A. dorioni has been recorded flow through lowland tropical forest and are characterized as warm freshwater environments.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic — associated with the water column from near the bottom to mid-water — in a tropical freshwater setting. Precise habitat parameters for A. dorioni specifically have not been published in detail; the paucity of field data is reflected in its IUCN Data Deficient listing, which notes that information on threats, habitat requirements, and conservation needs in the wild is insufficient for a threat assessment.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Astyanax dorioni has been published. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 2.9 (± 0.4 se), a value consistent with omnivory with an insectivorous lean — similar to many Astyanax congeners that feed opportunistically on terrestrial and aquatic insects, small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus.
Close relatives in the Central American Astyanax group, including the widely studied A. mexicanus, exploit a broad diet that varies by habitat and season, shifting between invertebrates and plant material depending on availability. It is reasonable to infer that A. dorioni, as a medium-to-large Astyanax of a productive lowland river system, behaves similarly, but direct evidence from gut-content analyses specific to this species has not been located in published sources.
Mating
No reproductive study specific to Astyanax dorioni has been published. Astyanax as a genus is characterized by egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care. Eggs are broadcast over the substrate or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, and once spawning is complete neither parent guards nor tends the eggs.
Congeners that have been studied in detail — in particular A. mexicanus, for which extensive laboratory breeding data exist — spawn in response to environmental cues including water temperature, light, and flow, producing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that settle among vegetation or on the substrate. Whether A. dorioni has any seasonally triggered reproductive peak tied to the Usumacinta's hydrology is not documented; data sparse.
Breeding
Because Astyanax dorioni is not established in the aquarium hobby and has not been the subject of captive-breeding studies, no detailed breeding account exists for this species. The general Astyanax breeding pattern — egg-scattering with adhesive eggs, no parental care, free-swimming larvae that require small live foods initially — can be reasonably assumed to apply, but specifics such as clutch size, incubation period, and fry development have not been documented for A. dorioni.
Given the species' Data Deficient IUCN status and its relative obscurity, it is unlikely to be available through the ornamental trade. Any future captive work would presumably follow protocols developed for other large Central American Astyanax.
In the aquarium
Astyanax dorioni is not established in the aquarium hobby and is effectively unavailable to hobbyists. No care sheet specific to this species exists in the hobby literature. The Seriously Fish database does not carry a profile for A. dorioni; only congeneric species such as A. mexicanus and A. bimaculatus are covered there.
Based on the water parameters reported for closely related Central American Astyanax — temperature 68–84 °F, pH 5.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard water — a similar range would be a reasonable starting point if the species were ever to become available. At a maximum size of 7.5 in SL, it would require a spacious aquarium suited to a larger characin. Its omnivorous feeding habit and likely shoaling behaviour (typical of the genus) would inform tankmate selection and feeding regimen. For now, the species remains one for field biologists rather than aquarists.
Conservation
Astyanax dorioni is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed 22 April 2019 by Tim Lyons of the Albuquerque Biopark, New Mexico. A Data Deficient listing does not imply that a species is secure; it means that the available information is insufficient to determine whether it faces a risk of extinction. The assessment notes that data on threats, habitat condition, and conservation needs in the wild are lacking.
The species is known from the Usumacinta River basin, a river system that passes through areas of Guatemala and Mexico subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and in some areas damming. The Río La Pasión — one of the Guatemalan tributaries where A. dorioni has been recorded — has experienced episodes of pesticide contamination from agricultural runoff, events that have caused large-scale fish kills. Whether A. dorioni has been directly affected is not documented. Gathering baseline distributional and population data sufficient to move the species out of Data Deficient and into a properly evaluated IUCN category remains a priority for future fieldwork in the region.
