Astyanax embera is a small characid from the Pacific-draining rivers of western Colombia, described in 2018 from the Telembí River in the Patía basin. Named after the Emberá people — indigenous communities whose territory encompasses the type locality near Barbacoas, Nariño — this moderately sized tetra belongs to the orthodus species-group within the enormous genus Astyanax and is distinguished from close relatives by the dimensions of its caudal peduncle spot and the absence of pigmentation on a distinctive anal-fin band.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax embera was formally described by Ruiz-C., Román-Valencia, Taphorn, Buckup & Ortega in 2018, with the type locality recorded as the Telembí River at the mouth of the Yamundé River, approximately 1 mi below the town of Barbacoas, Municipality of Barbacoas, Nariño Department, Colombia — a tributary system of the Patía River Basin draining toward the Pacific coast. The holotype (IUQ 3614) measured 3.5 in standard length, with paratypes ranging from 1.5 in SL in males to 3.5 in SL in females. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is Astyanax embera Ruiz-C., Román-Valencia, Taphorn, Buckup & Ortega, 2018.

The species is placed within the orthodus species-group of Astyanax, a large and diverse genus encompassing hundreds of characids across Central and South America. Within this group, A. embera is distinguished from its closest relative A. orthodus primarily by the extent of the caudal peduncle spot — spanning 4–6 scale rows in A. embera versus only 2–4 in A. orthodus — and by a characteristic unpigmented band on the anal fin, a character state absent or differently expressed in related taxa. Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae, the most species-rich family of freshwater fishes in the Americas.

Morphology

Astyanax embera is a moderately sized tetra: FishBase records a maximum of 3.5 in standard length for males and 3.5 in SL for females, making females the larger sex — a pattern not uncommon among Astyanax. The body form follows the typical Astyanax plan: fusiform, laterally compressed, with a relatively deep body profile, a terminal mouth armed with the small teeth characteristic of omnivorous characids, and a short adipose fin between the dorsal and the caudal peduncle.

The most diagnostically useful characters lie in the pigmentation pattern. A dark blotch at the base of the caudal peduncle is present in many Astyanax species, but in A. embera this marking is notably large, spanning 4–6 scale rows across the peduncle. The anal fin carries an unpigmented band — a pale zone set against a more pigmented background — that helps separate this species from A. orthodus and other members of the group in which the band is either absent or more heavily pigmented. Overall body colouration, while not described in vivid detail in the original description, is consistent with the silver-to-olive lateral compression typical of Astyanax species inhabiting small lowland streams.

Habitat

Astyanax embera is endemic to a restricted section of Pacific-coast Colombia. FishBase and the original description confirm its presence in the Patía River Basin; the Colombian freshwater fish checklist further records the species from the upper San Juan and Atrato River basins of western Colombia, all draining the Pacific slopes of the Colombian Andes and Chocó lowlands.

The type locality — the Telembí River near Barbacoas, Nariño — is a small tropical stream flowing through rainforest at low elevation. FishBase categorises the species as a freshwater benthopelagic inhabitant of tropical waters. No detailed in-situ physicochemical data for A. embera's specific localities have been published; related Colombian characids from comparable Pacific-draining small streams typically occupy warm, soft to moderately mineralised waters consistent with the humid Chocó biogeographic province. The species appears to be a small-stream inhabitant rather than a large-river fish, based on the habitat description from the original description.

Feeding

No published dietary data are available specifically for Astyanax embera. Diet can be reasonably inferred from what is known about the genus and the habitat: Astyanax species are characteristically opportunistic omnivores, consuming small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans — surface-fallen terrestrial insects, algae, and plant material. Species inhabiting small forest streams exploit the high input of allochthonous material (leaf litter, insects) from the surrounding canopy.

In an aquarium context, any Astyanax of this size can be expected to accept standard prepared foods including quality flake, small pellets, and micropellets, as well as frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm, and Tubifex. A varied diet supports good colouration and condition. Because specific feeding ecology for A. embera has not been studied, hobbyists should treat feeding recommendations as informed inference rather than documented fact.

Mating

No spawning observations for Astyanax embera in the wild have been published, and the species is not established in the ornamental trade. Based on the reproductive biology of Astyanax broadly — a genus whose spawning ecology is best known from A. mexicanus and a handful of other well-studied species — mating involves open, egg-scattering behaviour with no pair bond formation and no parental investment. Males typically pursue and court receptive females in open water or near vegetation, releasing sperm simultaneously with egg deposition.

Seasonal breeding cues in tropical stream-dwelling Astyanax are often tied to rainfall and hydrological cycles rather than temperature alone, with spawning activity frequently peaking during or after seasonal floods. Males within the genus do not typically exhibit pronounced secondary sexual characters, though mature males may be slightly slimmer-bodied and somewhat smaller than females at comparable ages, as is suggested by the size data for A. embera itself.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Astyanax embera have been documented in the literature or hobby sources, and the species is not known to be held in private collections or public aquaria outside of scientific contexts. General Astyanax breeding biology — applicable as a framework in the absence of species-specific data — follows the egg-scattering pattern common across Characidae: spawning over fine-leaved vegetation or other substrates without nest construction, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited and immediately abandoned, hatching within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and free-swimming larvae that begin feeding on microorganisms within a few days.

Should A. embera ever become available to hobbyists, established protocols for similarly sized Astyanax would serve as a reasonable starting point: a soft, warm, well-oxygenated spawning tank, fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and prompt separation of adults from eggs to prevent predation. At present, however, all breeding information for this species remains inferential.

In the aquarium

Astyanax embera is not currently available in the ornamental fish trade and has no documented aquarium history. As a species from low-elevation tropical streams of the Colombian Pacific coast, its husbandry requirements — were it to become available — would likely align with those of other Astyanax from similar habitats: warm water in the range of approximately 75–82 °F, soft to moderately hard conditions reflecting its Chocó-region origins, and a well-maintained, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming space.

Astyanax species as a group are active, shoaling fish that do best in groups of six or more, and A. embera at up to 3.5 in SL would require an aquarium of moderate size — 39.5 in or longer — to accommodate a proper school. No specific tankmate, décor, or care data exist for this species. Hobbyists interested in the genus are currently better served by more established and commercially available Astyanax such as A. mexicanus (the blind cave tetra) or the assorted species traded as 'red hook' or 'silver' characins.

Conservation

Astyanax embera has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2018 from a restricted range in western Colombia, it lacks a formal conservation evaluation, and its population size, trend, and threats have not been quantified in the published literature.

The Patía, San Juan, and Atrato basins of western Colombia — the known range of A. embera — fall within the Chocó biodiversity hotspot, one of the most species-rich and most threatened regions on earth. Deforestation, agricultural conversion, artisanal and small-scale mining (particularly gold mining, which devastates stream quality), and associated sediment and chemical pollution are pervasive threats to freshwater biodiversity across this region. While no species-specific threat data exist for A. embera, the combination of a narrow endemic range and intensifying land-use pressure in the Colombian Pacific lowlands warrants attention. Formal IUCN assessment and targeted field surveys would be a valuable first step toward understanding the conservation needs of this recently described species.
