Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax epiagos was described by Angela M. Zanata and Priscila Camelier in 2008, in a paper published in Zootaxa (issue 1908, pages 28–40) presenting two new Astyanax species from the upper Rio Paraguaçu and Rio Itapicuru basins of the Chapada Diamantina in Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The type locality is the Rio Ferro Doido above a waterfall approximately 98 metres high, within the Rio Jacuípe sub-basin of the Rio Paraguaçu drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax epiagos Zanata & Camelier, 2008, placed within the large and taxonomically complex genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, in the family Characidae.
Astyanax is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics, with dozens of valid species distributed from the southwestern United States to Argentina. The northeastern Brazilian species cluster, including those of the Paraguaçu drainage, represents a regional radiation in isolated highland stream systems. The original description diagnoses A. epiagos by a combination of characters — chiefly the shape and position of the humeral blotch, body proportions, and squamation — that separate it from congeners occurring elsewhere in the Paraguaçu and adjacent basins.
Morphology
Astyanax epiagos is a small, fusiform, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body is typical of the generalist Astyanax bauplan: relatively deep, with a rounded snout, a terminal mouth bearing small, multi-cuspid teeth, and the family's characteristic adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins.
A vertically elongated humeral blotch — a dark mark immediately behind the gill cover — is a diagnostic feature noted in the original description. The overall body colouration in life has not been extensively documented beyond the type series, but preserved specimens show the silvery, dark-edged scale pattern common in the genus, with a dark lateral stripe running to the base of the caudal fin. Standard morphometric and meristic details that distinguish the species from its nearest regional congeners were set out in the 2008 description.
Habitat
All confirmed records of Astyanax epiagos come from the Rio Ferro Doido above a waterfall roughly 98 metres high, at elevations between approximately 899 and 934 metres above sea level in the Chapada Diamantina highland of Bahia, Brazil. This is a dark-water stream with rocky substrate running through campo rupestre — the rugged, shrubby high-altitude vegetation of the Brazilian shield — and the known habitat consists of small pools up to about 0.5 metres deep and 1.5 metres wide.
The waterfall itself appears to act as a hard zoogeographic barrier: intensive collecting efforts below the falls have yielded no specimens of A. epiagos, despite sympatric species such as Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus being present in the same reach above the waterfall. The species' area of occupancy has been estimated at just 2 mi² — a figure that reflects not rarity within a broader distribution but rather the genuinely tiny extent of its known range. Whether the upper stream has been fully surveyed, or whether headwater tributaries on the same side of the falls support the species, remains unknown.
Feeding
Gut-content analysis documented for Astyanax epiagos shows a mixed diet of plant and animal material typical of many small, generalist characids in high-altitude streams. Recorded dietary items include filamentous algae, vascular plant fragments, and a range of arthropods: Diptera (chiefly Chironomidae midge larvae), Hemiptera, Coleoptera (including Chrysomelidae beetles), and Hymenoptera.
This omnivorous diet — taking invertebrates drifting or falling into the stream while also grazing algae from rocky surfaces — is ecologically consistent with the nutrient-limited, low-productivity stream environment of the campo rupestre. The mix of terrestrial and aquatic insect prey suggests the species forages both in the water column and at or near the surface, exploiting seasonal pulses of invertebrate input from the surrounding scrubland vegetation.
Mating
No direct behavioural observations of mating in Astyanax epiagos have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of other small Astyanax species in upland Brazilian streams, the species almost certainly practises open egg-scattering with no parental care — the ancestral mode for Characidae. Males are typically smaller and slimmer-bodied than ripe females, and courtship is brief, with pairs or small groups releasing eggs among submerged vegetation or over rocky substrate.
Adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or algal mats are the typical Astyanax pattern, and spawning is generally tied to the onset of the rainy season in inland Brazilian drainages, when rising water temperatures and flow cues stimulate reproduction. For a population restricted to a tiny high-altitude stream, the seasonal hydrology of the Ferro Doido above the waterfall likely plays a strong role in timing breeding activity.
Breeding
Astyanax epiagos has not been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby as far as published records indicate, and no captive-breeding data exist. The reproductive biology inferred for the species follows the standard small-Astyanax pattern: eggs are scattered over substrate or fine vegetation, are adhesive or semi-adhesive, receive no parental attention, and hatch after a few days at tropical stream temperatures. Fry are initially plankton-feeding, transitioning to invertebrate and algal diets as they grow.
Given its extreme range restriction and Data Deficient IUCN status, the species has not attracted the captive-husbandry interest that more tractable or more threatened high-profile species receive. Any future conservation-oriented captive programme would need to draw on in-situ collection under permit, given that no established aquarium population is known.
In the aquarium
Astyanax epiagos is not available in the ornamental fish trade and is not kept by hobbyists. The species is known only from field collections made during ichthyological surveys of the Chapada Diamantina; there is no indication that it has ever been exported or maintained in captivity. Given that its entire known population occupies a few small pools above a single waterfall, any collection for aquarium purposes would be scientifically and ethically untenable without formal research permits and a robust conservation justification.
For aquarists interested in related highland-stream Astyanax species from northeastern Brazil, the genus contains many small, hardy, and adaptable forms suitable for species tanks with cooler water, moderate flow, and rock-and-plant aquascaping that approximates the campo rupestre stream environment. Water parameters for the type locality — elevated altitude, dark-water stream, rocky substrate — suggest slightly acidic to neutral soft water would be appropriate for the broader habitat type, though no captive data exist for A. epiagos itself.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Astyanax epiagos as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2018 (published 2021), with assessment ID 1812021. The DD listing reflects a genuine knowledge gap: the species is known only from its type locality — a single stream reach above a waterfall — and neither population size, population trend, nor the true upper limit of its distribution has been established. The estimated area of occupancy is just 2 mi², but whether this truly captures the full range or simply the extent of survey effort is not known.
Several factors make A. epiagos a species of potential conservation concern even under the DD assessment. Its extreme range restriction to an above-waterfall isolate in the Chapada Diamantina leaves it with no buffer against local habitat degradation, water abstraction, or change in stream hydrology — stressors increasingly relevant in semi-arid Bahia. The species has no confirmed presence in any protected area. Further field surveys above the Rio Ferro Doido waterfall, targeted population assessments, and formal evaluation of habitat condition are the most pressing priorities for determining whether this species warrants uplisting to a threatened category under future IUCN assessments.
