Astyanax eremus was described by Luiz Fernando Stopassola Ingenito and Luiz Fernando Duboc in 2014. The type locality is a small tributary of the upper Rio Iguaçu basin near Balsa Nova, Paraná State, Brazil. The holotype, catalogued as MNRJ 39677, measured 3.5 in standard length; a paratype (MCP 46942) measured 2.5 in SL. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, recorded as Astyanax eremus Ingenito & Duboc, 2014.
The species belongs to the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, a group of small, often morphologically similar characids distributed across southern Brazilian headwaters and Atlantic Forest drainages. Members of this complex are notorious for overlapping meristic characters and subtle morphological differences, which has complicated their taxonomy for decades. Astyanax eremus is distinguished within the group principally by the ontogenetic shift in mouth position — terminal in younger fish, becoming subterminal in larger individuals — and by variation in inner premaxillary tooth row count.
The specific epithet eremus derives from the Latin eremus (or Greek eremos), meaning solitary, lone, or deserted — an apt allusion to the species' isolated, restricted range in a single headwater tributary, far from the broader distribution of its relatives.
Morphology
