Astyanax fasslii is a small characid tetra from Colombia, described by Franz Steindachner in 1915 and named in honour of Anton Heinrich Hermann Fassl, the German natural-history collector who gathered the holotype. The species remains poorly known in both science and the aquarium hobby — the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, reflecting a near-total absence of modern field surveys — yet it belongs to one of the most species-rich and ecologically successful genera in South American freshwaters, a group represented on every continent-spanning river system from northern Mexico to the Río de la Plata.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax fasslii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1915, based on material collected in Colombia by the commercial entomologist Anton Heinrich Hermann Fassl. The species epithet fasslii is a Latin genitive patronym honouring Fassl; Steindachner's original spelling of the name is the valid form. The authority is given in parentheses, indicating that the species was originally placed in a genus other than Astyanax before being reassigned.

Astyanax itself is a large, cosmopolitan New World genus in the family Characidae — the speciose family that encompasses the great majority of tetras and characins in the Americas. The genus spans an enormous geographic and ecological range, from blind cave fish (most famously Astyanax mexicanus) to open-water schooling species in major river basins. A. fasslii falls within the South American radiation of the genus and, based on its Colombian provenance, likely occupies one of the Andean or Pacific-slope drainages, though no modern morphological or molecular revision has formally resolved its phylogenetic position within the genus.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) maintains Astyanax fasslii (Steindachner, 1915) as the valid name. No synonyms are currently recognised.

Morphology

Detailed meristic and morphometric data for Astyanax fasslii are not available in the published literature accessible to date; the species is known principally from the original 1915 type description, and no modern redescription has been published. As a member of Astyanax, the species is expected to conform broadly to the body plan shared across the genus: a moderately compressed, oval-bodied fish with a relatively blunt snout, a small but well-toothed mouth, and a single short dorsal fin followed by an adipose fin — the hallmark of the characid family.

Silvery flanks with a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot are common in many Astyanax species, and a similar pattern can be tentatively expected in A. fasslii, though colour in alcohol-preserved type specimens is a poor guide to life coloration. Without a modern redescription, specific counts of lateral-line scales, dorsal fin rays, and dentition that would allow confident identification in the field cannot be given here. Researchers encountering small characids in Colombian drainages should consult the original Steindachner description and any subsequent Colombian ichthyological surveys for characters.

Maximum size has not been reliably reported in the accessible literature.

Habitat

FishBase records Astyanax fasslii from South America, with a distribution centred on Colombia. The species is classified as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish, indicating that it occupies the mid-water and lower portions of the water column in rivers or streams rather than being exclusively bottom-dwelling or surface-oriented — a pattern common to many Astyanax in flowing water systems.

The specific river basin or drainage within Colombia is not documented in the sources available for this account. Given the country's complex hydrography — encompassing Pacific-slope coastal rivers, Andean tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco, and Magdalena–Cauca drainage systems — A. fasslii could plausibly occur in any of these systems. Colombia's western and central Andean slopes host an exceptionally high diversity of small characins, and many species from Steindachner's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century Colombian collections originated from the Magdalena or Cauca valleys or their foothill streams.

Water chemistry preferences are undocumented for this species. Colombian Andean-slope streams span a wide range of temperature and chemistry depending on elevation; lowland tributaries tend to be warm and soft to moderately mineralised, while higher-elevation streams run cooler and may be swift and oxygenated.

Feeding

No dietary studies have been published specifically for Astyanax fasslii. Across the genus, Astyanax species are characteristically opportunistic omnivores, taking a mix of small invertebrates (aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans), terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface, algae, and plant material depending on what is locally available. This trophic flexibility is one reason the genus has diversified so successfully across the Neotropics.

In the absence of species-specific data, aquarium care can be guided by the feeding ecology of the broader genus and of comparably sized Colombian characins: a varied diet including quality dried foods, small live or frozen invertebrates (Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm), and some plant-based material is appropriate. Astyanax are active, energetic feeders and should not be underfed or kept with significantly larger species that will dominate food competition.

Mating

No field or laboratory observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax fasslii have been published. Reproductive biology across Astyanax follows a consistent pattern: males court females in open water or among aquatic vegetation, and spawning involves no pair bonding or territory establishment. Males typically display lateral posturing and pursue receptive females, with courtship brief and driven by water temperature and photoperiod cues. There is no parental investment after egg release.

In the aquarium, Astyanax species generally spawn most readily after a simulated seasonal transition — a slight temperature increase or extended photoperiod is sufficient to bring conditioned adults into breeding condition. Based on genus-wide experience, including notes on related Astyanax species, a longer photoperiod (approaching 24 hours in some accounts) can be used to stimulate spawning in the aquarium setting.

Breeding

Astyanax fasslii has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions, and no specific breeding account has been published. All Astyanax are egg-scattering open spawners that show no parental care: fertilised eggs are broadcast among fine-leaved aquatic plants or scattered over the substrate, hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and receive no attention from either parent. Adults will consume both eggs and fry if not separated from the spawning medium promptly.

By analogy with other Astyanax and small characins, a breeding setup would include a well-planted or moss-covered tank (or synthetic spawning mops), slightly raised temperature, conditioning with live and frozen foods, and removal of adults following spawning. Fry are expected to be free-swimming within a few days of hatching and to accept infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before progressing to finely powdered dry food and newly hatched brine shrimp. Because this species is essentially unknown in the hobby, there is no specific documentation of clutch size, incubation period, or fry-rearing requirements.

In the aquarium

Astyanax fasslii is not established in the aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists under its own name. Its inclusion here is primarily as a record of a valid Colombian species within a genus that is widely kept — and to note that unidentified small Astyanax imported from Colombia may occasionally include this species among them.

Were it available, care would follow the general Astyanax template: a well-filtered aquarium of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length, tropical temperatures in the range suitable for Colombian lowland or foothill species (approximately 72–81 °F as a starting point), and a group of six or more individuals to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce inter-individual stress. Peaceful tankmates of similar size are appropriate. The genus is hardy as a rule, tolerating a reasonably wide range of water conditions, and feeds readily on standard prepared foods supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates.

Conservation

Astyanax fasslii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. This designation does not indicate that the species is necessarily at low risk; rather, it reflects a lack of sufficient information about the species' distribution, population size, and habitat status to make a threat assessment. A species described in 1915 from Colombian material and not subsequently the subject of targeted surveys is precisely the kind of taxon that accumulates a Data Deficient listing — it may be locally common in an undocumented drainage, or it may be genuinely rare and under pressure from Colombia's ongoing freshwater habitat loss.

Colombia's freshwater fish fauna faces significant threats from agriculture, mining, deforestation, and the associated siltation and chemical contamination of river systems. Until field surveys document the actual range and abundance of A. fasslii, its conservation needs cannot be evaluated. The IUCN assessment underscores the urgency of basic ichthyological survey work in Colombian drainages, where many nominally described species remain biological ciphers more than a century after their original description.
