Astyanax hermosus is a small characid tetra described in 2005 from a single locality in the Primero River basin of Córdoba province, Argentina — the Valle Hermoso site in the San Francisco River drainage. Known from an extremely restricted range, it carries a Critically Endangered assessment on the IUCN Red List, making it one of the most threatened members of a genus that spans much of the Americas. Habitat loss and degradation in its narrow Argentinian catchment represent the primary pressures on a species that has no known refugial populations elsewhere.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax hermosus was formally described by Adriana M. Miquelarena, Liliana Protogino, and Hugo L. López in 2005 in the Revue suisse de zoologie (volume 112, issue 1, pages 13–20), based on material collected from the Primero River basin in Córdoba province, Argentina. The type locality is Valle Hermoso in the San Francisco River system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the original combination as Astyanax hermosus Miquelarena, Protogino & López, 2005.

A significant nomenclatural change followed from a large-scale phylogenetic revision of Astyanax conducted around 2019–2020. That study determined Astyanax in its traditional, broad sense to be paraphyletic, and several subgeneric lineages were elevated to full genus rank. As a result, the species is now listed in FishBase under the recombination Psalidodon hermosus, though the original name Astyanax hermosus remains in use in much of the literature. Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; users encountering the species in databases may find it under either combination. The species belongs to Characidae, the family that encompasses the great majority of New World tetras and which is the most species-rich family of freshwater fishes in South America.

Morphology

Detailed morphological data for Astyanax hermosus in the open literature are limited, as the species is known from a small number of specimens collected at a single locality. It is a characid of the Astyanax alliance — typically a small, laterally compressed, silvery fish with the characteristic adipose fin and forked tail of the family Characidae. FishBase does not record a maximum total length for the species, and no standard-length figure appears in accessible secondary sources; a Bayesian length-weight model is available (a = 0.01738, b = 3.01, cm TL), consistent with a small tetra.

The epithet hermosus (Latin for 'beautiful' or 'handsome') presumably reflects the appearance of the type specimens, though a detailed description of coloration and meristics is confined to the original description in the Revue suisse de zoologie. Given the data paucity, no size estimate is reproduced here as fact.

Habitat

Astyanax hermosus is a freshwater fish classified as benthopelagic and recorded from subtropical conditions in the Primero River basin of Córdoba province, central Argentina. The type locality, Valle Hermoso, lies within the San Francisco River drainage at approximately 37°07'S, 64°29'W — a dryland river system in the Pampas transition zone rather than a tropical lowland. FishBase assigns the species to the benthopelagic ecological guild, suggesting it occupies mid-water and lower water-column positions in its river habitat.

The Primero River system drains a largely agricultural and semi-arid landscape in Córdoba province, subject to seasonal flow variability and increasing pressure from water extraction and catchment modification. The geographic restriction to this single basin — with no known populations in adjacent drainages — means the entire global population occupies what is ecologically and hydrologically a small, stressed river system. FishBase attributes the species a high population resilience (doubling time under 15 months), suggesting it can recover quickly from moderate disturbance if habitat remains available.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Astyanax hermosus a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with an omnivorous diet that includes invertebrates and plant or detrital material. Members of the Astyanax alliance are broadly opportunistic feeders, consuming aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, fine plant material, and organic detritus according to local availability.

No specific dietary study for this species has been published in accessible literature. Given the species' extreme rarity and restricted range, it has received little ecological field study beyond the original description. Its trophic level and family affiliation suggest a generalist feeding strategy typical of small Neotropical characids that inhabit flowing-water systems.

Mating

No specific mating behaviour has been documented for Astyanax hermosus in the literature. EOL records sexual reproduction for the species, consistent with all described Astyanax-alliance characids. Members of the broader Astyanax group are egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawners with no parental care — a reproductive strategy shared across most Characidae.

Male and female Astyanax typically display subtle sexual dimorphism, with females broader in the abdomen when ripe. Given the rarity and threatened status of A. hermosus, no captive spawning account has been published, and courtship specifics for this species remain undescribed.

Breeding

Astyanax hermosus has not been bred in captivity in any documented account accessible in the literature, which is unsurprising given that it is known only from a restricted wild population and is not established in the aquarium hobby. The high resilience score on FishBase (population doubling time under 15 months) implies relatively rapid reproduction under favourable conditions, consistent with the egg-scattering, high-fecundity mode typical of small open-spawning characids.

Broadly, Astyanax-alliance characids scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine vegetation or substrate, with no parental guarding of eggs or fry. Incubation periods, fry development, and clutch characteristics for A. hermosus specifically are undescribed. Any husbandry information would need to be developed from first principles in a conservation-breeding context.

In the aquarium

Astyanax hermosus is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not in trade. It is a narrow-range endemic known from a single drainage in Argentina and is assessed as Critically Endangered; there is no captive population and no documented husbandry record for the species.

Aquarists interested in the Astyanax group have access to several congeners or close relatives that are well established in the hobby — most notably the widespread and polymorphic Astyanax mexicanus, which includes the cave-adapted morphotype known as the blind cave tetra. Any consideration of Astyanax hermosus in an aquarium context would require engagement with Argentine wildlife authorities and a formal conservation-breeding mandate rather than commercial collection.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Astyanax hermosus as Critically Endangered under criterion B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed on 15 January 2021. This dual-criterion listing reflects both a severely restricted extent of occurrence and a severely restricted area of occupancy, combined with continuing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat. The Primero River basin in Córdoba province is subject to agricultural runoff, water extraction, and riparian vegetation loss — threats that degrade the river conditions on which the species depends.

The species is endemic to Argentina and is known from a single drainage. There are no confirmed populations elsewhere, meaning the entire global population is concentrated in one river system that faces ongoing anthropogenic pressure. The IUCN habitat-loss criterion is the primary driver of the CR listing: a collapse in habitat quality across the area of occupancy has no buffer from outlying populations. No formal conservation programme specific to this species is documented in publicly available sources, and the combination of extreme range restriction and habitat decline makes A. hermosus one of the most at-risk freshwater fishes in Argentina.
