Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax ita was described by Adriana Almirón, María de las Mercedes Azpelicueta, and Jorge Casciotta in 2002, based on material collected from Arroyo Tateto in the Río Iguazú drainage of Misiones Province, Argentina. The original description appeared in Zoologische Abhandlungen (Dresden) 52: 3–10, 2002. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the currently valid name as Psalidodon ita, following the revision of the paraphyletic Astyanax complex by Terán et al. (2020), which resurrected the genus Psalidodon to accommodate a large assemblage of South American species previously lumped under Astyanax. For site consistency and hobbyist recognition, the name Astyanax ita is used here.
The reclassification by Terán et al. (2020), published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 190(4): 1217–1234, drew on molecular and morphological evidence to demonstrate that the traditional, broadly defined Astyanax was not monophyletic. Psalidodon, once regarded as a synonym, was reinstated to give a more natural circumscription. The CoF notes the species' distribution as the Río San Antonio drainage of Argentina, which forms part of the upper Iguazú basin system.
Morphology
Astyanax ita is a small characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like many members of the broader Astyanax complex it has the typical characid body plan: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a blunt snout, large eye, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family. Such environments are oligotrophic, well-oxygenated, and subject to seasonal discharge fluctuations driven by subtropical rainfall. The extreme habitat specificity of Arroyo Tateto means the species has no buffer population elsewhere in the basin.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0 for Astyanax ita, placing it at the lower end of carnivore-omnivore feeding. Astyanax ita is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available. The combination of its narrow endemic range, Endangered conservation status, and minimal exposure in the ornamental trade means aquarists are unlikely to encounter this species outside of specialist scientific collections or future conservation-breeding programmes.
For those working with closely related stream-dwelling Astyanax or Psalidodon species from the Río Plata basin, best practice calls for well-oxygenated, moderate-temperature water, good current simulation, and a diet of varied small foods. However, specific husbandry recommendations for A. ita cannot be responsibly derived from the data available.
Conservation
Astyanax ita is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment dated 6 October 2020. The EN listing reflects an extent of occurrence below the B1 threshold combined with documented or inferred ongoing decline in the quality or extent of its habitat. The restriction of the known population to a single small stream — Arroyo Tateto in the Río Iguazú basin — means any local perturbation has system-wide consequences for the species.
Threats include habitat isolation, the vulnerability inherent to a single-site endemic, and potential human impacts in the surrounding Atlantic Forest landscape, a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot that has lost the great majority of its original forest cover. Misiones Province retains more Atlantic Forest than most of its range, but agricultural encroachment, stream modification, and water-quality degradation remain ongoing concerns for small, range-restricted stream fish. No captive assurance population is known to exist, making the long-term persistence of this species entirely contingent on the integrity of Arroyo Tateto and its catchment.
