Astyanax jacobinae is a small, colourful characin discovered in the headwaters of the rio Itapicuru drainage in Bahia, north-eastern Brazil — the heart of the Caatinga, South America's largest tropical dry forest. Described in 2008 by Ana Zanata and Priscila Camelier from a single stream in the municipality of Jacobina, it stands out among its genus relatives with vivid reddish-orange fins and a compressed, moderately elongate body. The species has rarely appeared in the hobby and remains assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting how little is known about its population size and ecology.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax jacobinae was formally described by Ana Lúcia Zanata and Priscila Camelier in 2008 in the journal Zootaxa (volume 1908, pages 28–40), making it one of the more recently named members of the enormously species-rich genus Astyanax. The holotype, MZUSP 89570, measured 2 in standard length and was collected from the rio da Jaqueira below Cachoeira Araponga, a tributary of the rio Itapicuru-mirim within the rio Itapicuru basin, at an altitude of 1755 ft in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Astyanax jacobinae Zanata & Camelier, 2008.

Astyanax is a large and taxonomically complex neotropical genus in the family Characidae. Its many species are small to medium-bodied schooling characins distributed from the south-western United States to Argentina; the Brazilian Caatinga has its own subset of endemic Astyanax lineages, reflecting the isolation of its drainage basins. A. jacobinae belongs to that north-eastern Brazilian radiation and is currently placed without further subgeneric assignment pending broader phylogenetic analyses of the group.

Morphology

Astyanax jacobinae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. The body is laterally compressed and moderately elongate — a typical Astyanax build — with a terminal mouth positioned at the front of the snout. The species is notable for its fin colouration: the dorsal, anal, caudal, and adipose fins are described as reddish-orange, the pectoral fins yellowish, and the pelvic fins hyaline (clear). This combination of warm-toned fins against a generally silvery body makes it more ornamental than many of its congeners.

Beyond fin colouration, the original description notes a compressed body, moderately elongate proportions, and the absence of bony hooks on the fins — structures sometimes present in sexually dimorphic characins — which the authors note made it impossible to identify unambiguous sexually dimorphic characters in the examined material. Habitat

The species is endemic to the rio Itapicuru basin of the state of Bahia in north-eastern Brazil, within the geographic range of the Caatinga — the largest tropical dry forest region in South America. The type locality is a dark headwater stream characterised by mild water current, a depth of 1–2 ft, an average width of approximately 7 ft, and a substrate of pebbles, rocks, and sand. Marginal vegetation including trees, palms, and grasses shades and borders the channel.

The Caatinga is a seasonally harsh environment subject to strong rainfall seasonality, with streams that may flood in the wet season and shrink dramatically in the dry. Headwater fish faunas in this biome are typically dominated by small characins, and A. jacobinae occupies the upper reaches of its drainage at moderate altitude (1755 ft at the type locality). FishBase lists its distributional coordinates as roughly 11°S–12°S, 41°W–42°W within the Itapicuru drainage. No water chemistry measurements were recorded at the collection site in the original description.

Feeding

Stomach content analysis of one specimen in the original description revealed Chironomidae (midge) larvae, Trichoptera (caddisfly) larvae, Diptera fragments, and other arthropod material. This paints a picture of an active invertivore that forages on benthic and drifting insects, consistent with the feeding ecology of small Astyanax species generally.

As with most small characins, the diet is likely opportunistic and may include plant material, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen insects depending on season and local availability. The limited sample means a fuller dietary profile is not yet available; the Caatinga's seasonal hydrology probably drives significant seasonal shifts in prey availability.

Mating

No published observations of reproductive behaviour in the wild exist for Astyanax jacobinae. As a member of Astyanax — a genus studied extensively for reproduction in several wide-ranging species — it is expected to follow the ancestral characin pattern: egg-scattering with no pair bond and no parental care. Males and females likely broadcast adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or over the substrate during high-water periods coinciding with the Caatinga wet season.

The absence of fin hooks in examined specimens, as noted by the original describers, precluded identification of secondary sexual characters in the type series; the sexes could not be distinguished externally from the collected material. Whether females develop fuller abdomens when gravid — as in many Astyanax — is not recorded for this species.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Astyanax jacobinae are documented in the available literature, and the species has not appeared in the organised aquarium hobby. By analogy with related Astyanax, captive breeding would likely follow the pattern common to the genus: a brief courtship chase, egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or a soft substrate, adhesive eggs, and no parental investment. Eggs and fry would need to be separated from the adults to avoid predation.

Breeding in Astyanax is typically triggered by a rise in water temperature and a simulated increase in water level mimicking the onset of the rainy season — a cue that applies equally to Caatinga stream species. Specific parameters, clutch sizes, incubation times, and fry care requirements are unknown for this species and would need to be established from first-hand captive experience.

In the aquarium

Astyanax jacobinae is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and has not been commercially available as a traded species. All available information comes from the wild-caught type series. Its small size (to 2 in SL), attractive reddish-orange fins, and Astyanax body plan suggest it would be manageable in a standard small-to-medium tank setup, analogous to common tetras of similar size.

Based on its headwater stream habitat — shallow, shaded, with moderate current and a rock-and-sand substrate in a seasonally dry biome — a biotope-style setup with driftwood, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants would be appropriate if the species ever becomes available. Water chemistry specifics are not recorded for the collection site, but north-eastern Brazilian Caatinga streams tend toward neutral to slightly acidic, soft to moderately hard conditions. Any aquarist obtaining this species should treat husbandry as exploratory and document results for the benefit of the wider community.

Conservation

Astyanax jacobinae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 07 November 2018. Data Deficient does not imply that the species is secure; it means that insufficient information exists to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk. For a small headwater endemic known from a single drainage in the Caatinga — a biome facing escalating pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, water extraction, and climate-driven drought intensification — the precautionary concern is real.

The Caatinga is one of the world's most threatened and least protected biomes. Research by Tabarelli and colleagues has highlighted the degree to which its endemic freshwater fauna remains poorly studied, making DD listings common for recently described species. Until population surveys quantify the abundance and range of A. jacobinae within the rio Itapicuru basin, its true conservation status cannot be determined. The species has no known captive population that would act as a demographic buffer.
