Astyanax jacuhiensis is a small, silver-bodied characid native to the great river systems of subtropical South America — the Rio Jacuí, the Uruguay basin, and the broader Río de la Plata drainage, spanning Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Known in Brazilian Portuguese as the lambari do rabo amarelo (yellowtail lambari), it is part of the sprawling and taxonomically complex Astyanax bimaculatus species group and has been a subject of ecological studies documenting how freshwater stream fish respond to agricultural runoff and sewage pollution. It was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2024.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax jacuhiensis was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1894 as Tetragonopterus jacuhiensis, with the type locality given as the Rio Jacuí in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, later restricted by Fowler in 1906. It was subsequently moved into the genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, which encompasses the bulk of the middle-American and South American tetras in the family Characidae. The parenthetical authority — (Cope, 1894) — signals that the species was first described in a genus other than the one it now occupies.

The species has been treated as part of the Astyanax bimaculatus species group, a morphologically similar assemblage spread across the major drainages of lowland South America. Some taxonomic revisions have treated jacuhiensis as a junior synonym of Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875), a name with a complicated history of its own. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the authority for the currently accepted name; the status of this taxon has been actively debated, and workers should consult the latest edition of that catalog for the most current treatment.

Morphology

Astyanax jacuhiensis is a moderately elongated, laterally compressed characid reaching up to 5.5 in standard length according to FishBase records, though most individuals encountered in surveys are smaller. The body plan is typical of the Astyanax bimaculatus group: a fusiform, silvery fish with a relatively deep caudal peduncle, an adipose fin, and the characteristic Characidae tooth patterns in both jaws.

The common name lambari do rabo amarelo (yellowtail lambari) reflects a yellowish to pale-orange suffusion at the base of the caudal fin, a feature shared with related members of the bimaculatus group and useful for field identification alongside the caudal peduncle spot. Like many species in this group, individuals exhibit high mucus production under physiological stress — a trait documented in ecological studies and of interest to researchers using biochemical markers to assess water quality impacts on wild populations.

Habitat

Astyanax jacuhiensis inhabits freshwater rivers and streams across a substantial swath of subtropical South America. Its documented range spans the Rio Jacuí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul (its type locality), the Uruguay River basin shared by Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, and the broader Río de la Plata system. It is primarily a pelagic open-water fish of moderate and larger rivers rather than a specialist of small headwater streams, though it occurs across a range of lotic environments.

Water conditions across this range are temperate to warm subtropical, with marked seasonal variation in temperature, flow, and turbidity. The Uruguay River basin in particular presents a landscape under significant agricultural pressure, with large portions of the catchment given over to soy, maize, and livestock production. Studies have documented this species as a sentinel organism for diffuse pollution — populations in heavily farmed catchments show measurable biochemical stress responses to pesticide and sewage inputs, making it a useful ecological indicator species as well as a faunal component of those rivers.

Feeding

Astyanax jacuhiensis is an omnivore in the broad sense typical of the Astyanax bimaculatus group, foraging in the water column and near the surface for small invertebrates, insect larvae, terrestrial insects, and plant material. As a pelagic species it takes advantage of drift food and surface-fallen items, as well as zooplankton and small aquatic prey.

In captivity it accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. A varied diet including quality flake or pellet foods supplemented with frozen or live items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm maintains condition and colour. It is an active, competitive feeder that does well in a community setting provided tankmates are not significantly smaller than itself.

Mating

Astyanax jacuhiensis is an egg-scattering open spawner typical of the Astyanax bimaculatus group. Males are generally slimmer than ripe females and may exhibit slight colour intensification or more active pursuit behaviour when conditioning. Like most characids of its type, it does not form lasting pair bonds and engages in group or pair spawning without any preparatory site selection or territory defence.

Spawning is triggered by environmental cues — rising temperature, increased photoperiod, and rain simulation (a drop in conductivity with a partial water change) are the usual stimuli used by aquarists to condition the fish. No parental behaviour has been documented in this or closely related species of the bimaculatus group.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Astyanax jacuhiensis can be bred using the standard methods for egg-scattering characids. Conditioned adults are moved to a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a small water change with slightly cooler water often triggers spawning. The eggs are adhesive and settle among fine substrate or plant material; the adults should be removed after spawning as they will consume the eggs.

Incubation at typical subtropical temperatures completes in 24 to 48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days. Initial foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once the fry are large enough. Growth is relatively rapid for a small characid. As with related Astyanax species, captive breeding is straightforward and the species is not demanding in its requirements.

In the aquarium

Astyanax jacuhiensis is an active, sociable schooling fish suited to a subtropical community aquarium. It does best in groups of six or more, where the natural schooling behaviour is expressed and individuals are less likely to fin-nip tankmates. A tank of 35.5 in or more in length provides adequate swimming room for an adult group, with open mid-water space complemented by some planted areas and cover.

Water temperature should reflect its subtropical origins: the mid-teens to mid-20s Celsius suits it well, and it can tolerate cooler temperatures than many tropical aquarium fish. Standard community water chemistry — neutral to slightly alkaline, moderate hardness — is appropriate. It is an undemanding, hardy fish that tolerates a range of conditions, making it a practical choice for aquarists in temperate climates who keep unheated or mildly heated aquaria. It can be kept with similarly sized peaceful tetras, livebearers, corydoras catfish, and other subtropical community fish, but should not be housed with very small species that might be consumed or harassed.

Conservation

Astyanax jacuhiensis was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List in 2024, reflecting its wide distribution across the major river systems of subtropical South America and the absence of evidence for rapid population decline. It occurs across an extensive range in the Uruguay River basin, the Rio Jacuí, and the greater Río de la Plata system in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.

Despite its LC status, the species faces ongoing habitat pressures typical of the Southern Cone agricultural heartland: pesticide runoff from intensive soy and maize cultivation, organic pollution from livestock operations, and hydrological modification of rivers by dams and channelisation. Research using Astyanax jacuhiensis as a bioindicator has demonstrated that populations in degraded catchments show elevated biochemical stress markers, indicating sublethal impacts on fish physiology even where populations remain present. Long-term monitoring of such sentinel species is important for detecting early-stage ecological degradation before it translates into population declines significant enough to alter IUCN status.
