Astyanax jenynsii is a small characid from eastern Brazil, originally described by Steindachner in 1877 under the combination Tetragonopterus jenynsii and subsequently placed in the large and widespread genus Astyanax. It is a Data Deficient species on the IUCN Red List — a designation reflecting the scarcity of ecological and population data rather than confirmed rarity — and remains one of the lesser-known members of South America's richest fish genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax jenynsii was first described by Franz Steindachner in 1877 under the original combination Tetragonopterus jenynsii. The species was later transferred to Astyanax, where it currently remains as the valid name according to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and allied authorities. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the parenthetical authority (Steindachner, 1877) signals the transfer out of the original genus of description.

Astyanax is among the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae and arguably in all of freshwater ichthyology, with members distributed from Mexico through South America. The genus has historically been a taxonomic catch-all, and its limits continue to be revised as phylogenomic data accumulate. Where precisely A. jenynsii falls within these broader revisions remains uncertain given the limited published work on the species.

Morphology

Astyanax jenynsii is a small characid reaching a reported maximum of approximately 3 in standard length. Like other Astyanax it is presumed to carry the typical tetra body plan: a fusiform, moderately compressed body, a terminal mouth, an adipose fin, and the scaled lateral line characteristic of the family.

Beyond size, detailed morphological information in the accessible literature is sparse. The genus typically shows a dark humeral spot and a caudal peduncle spot or stripe — markings common to many Astyanax — but specific pigmentation details for A. jenynsii are not well documented in current sources. Published counts of fin rays, scales, and teeth, which define species boundaries in Astyanax, are available in Steindachner's original description but have not been summarised in widely accessible modern reviews.

Habitat

FishBase records the distribution of Astyanax jenynsii as eastern Brazil, though the precise drainage affiliation is noted with uncertainty. The species is listed as a benthopelagic freshwater fish, suggesting it occupies the water column close to or above the substrate in rivers or streams, a foraging pattern common in Astyanax generally.

Specific habitat data — water chemistry, vegetation type, substrate preference, altitude range, and associated fish community — are not available in the sources consulted. Within Astyanax as a whole, spawning is egg-scattering and non-guarding: males pursue females into open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, and eggs are released in small batches and left to settle or adhere to plants and substrate with no parental attendance.

The genus shows no parental care, and the same open-scatter strategy documented in the best-studied species — such as Astyanax mexicanus — is likely the baseline pattern for A. jenynsii, though confirmation from fieldwork or targeted breeding trials is absent from the literature.

Breeding

Captive breeding accounts for Astyanax jenynsii are not documented in the sources available. Congeners breed readily under standard tropical freshwater conditions: a temperature increase to trigger conditioning, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop as a substrate for adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, and removal of adults immediately after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs in Astyanax typically hatch within 24–48 hours at temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and the small fry begin free-swimming within a few days, at which point paramecia or commercial liquid fry foods are appropriate first foods before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Whether A. jenynsii behaves identically remains to be confirmed by those who succeed in obtaining and breeding the species.

In the aquarium

Astyanax jenynsii is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade, and the iNaturalist database records no photographic observations of the species — an indication of how rarely it is encountered outside specialist ichthyological collecting. It is not a species that hobbyists are likely to source through conventional retail channels.

Should specimens become available, care would logically follow the model established for smaller Astyanax: a well-filtered, moderately planted tank with open swimming space, neutral to slightly acidic soft water reflecting South American drainage chemistry, and a peaceful community of similarly sized fish. A group of at least six individuals would allow natural shoaling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Given the Data Deficient IUCN status and the apparent rarity of collections, any captive specimens would be of genuine interest to the hobby and to science.

Conservation

Astyanax jenynsii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in November 2018. A Data Deficient designation does not imply that the species is not threatened; rather, it reflects insufficient information on distribution, population size, and trends to assign a category under the Red List criteria. Given that the species is recorded from eastern Brazil — a region where freshwater habitats face significant pressure from agricultural expansion, water abstraction, and pollution — the absence of data is itself a concern.

With zero observations logged on iNaturalist and no dedicated profile in major hobby databases, A. jenynsii sits at the margins of scientific and hobbyist attention. Building even basic distributional and ecological records — through targeted collecting, voucher deposition, and genetic placement within the Astyanax phylogeny — would be the most meaningful step toward an informed conservation assessment.
