Astyanax joaovitori is a small, recently described characid from the headwaters of the rio Araguaia in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, named in 2017 in honour of the first author's son. Belonging to the species-rich Astyanax scabripinnis complex, it is one of several closely related small tetras endemic to the upper Araguaia drainage and its tributary streams near the Parque Nacional das Emas, a region of transitional cerrado and gallery-forest habitat in central Brazil. It was not in the hobby as of description and carries no recognised common name.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax joaovitori was formally described by Oliveira, Pavanelli & Bertaco in 2017, with the original description published in Zootaxa 4320(1): 174–177. The holotype (MCP 51897) was collected from the headwaters of the rio Araguaia near Parque Nacional das Emas, Alto Taquari, Mato Grosso State, Brazil (17°53'52"S, 53°07'38"W), and paratypes were deposited at LIRP, MCP, MZUEL, and NUP. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid per Dagosta & Marinho (2022), placed in family Characidae.

The species belongs to the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, a cluster of small, closely allied tetras found primarily in upland streams and headwater systems across central and southern Brazil. Genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is among the largest and most taxonomically challenging genera of Neotropical characids, and the scabripinnis complex in particular has expanded considerably as morphological and molecular studies reveal cryptic species across upland drainages. A. joaovitori was distinguished from its relatives by a combination of meristic and morphological characters documented in the original description.

Morphology

Astyanax joaovitori reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL, though most preserved type specimens measured substantially smaller: paratypes ranged from approximately 1–1.5 in SL, indicating that adult size in the field may typically fall well under the reported maximum. It is a fusiform, laterally compressed characid with the typical body form of the Astyanax scabripinnis group: a moderately deep body, a forked caudal fin, and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family.

Detailed colour and morphometric data beyond what is noted in the original description are not well documented in the secondary literature. Like other members of the scabripinnis complex, it is likely a silvery fish with a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot, characters that are broadly shared across the complex. Definitive separation from close relatives rests on the combination of characters presented in the 2017 description rather than any single diagnostic field mark visible to the naked eye.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper rio Araguaia and its tributaries in Mato Grosso State, Brazil — a headwater system draining the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and transitional gallery-forest country near Parque Nacional das Emas. This region lies on the central Brazilian plateau at moderate elevation, and the rio Araguaia's upper reaches are characterised by clear, often fast-flowing streams with sandy or rocky substrates and fringing riparian vegetation.

No detailed habitat notes specific to A. joaovitori appear in the available literature, but congeners in the scabripinnis complex typically inhabit small upland streams, occupying the mid-water column in clear, well-oxygenated water with moderate to good current. Gallery-forest streams in the cerrado belt often have lower pH than Amazonian lowland rivers and can experience seasonal fluctuation in flow and temperature, reflecting the strongly seasonal cerrado climate.

Feeding

No published dietary studies are available for Astyanax joaovitori specifically. Members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex are generally omnivorous opportunists, consuming a mix of small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, algae, and plant detritus — a feeding strategy typical of small characids in upland Brazilian streams.

In an aquarium setting, congeners in the scabripinnis group accept a broad diet of good-quality flake and small pelleted foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet best reflects the opportunistic feeding ecology of the species in the wild.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Astyanax joaovitori have been published. As with most small Astyanax, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner: males likely pursue females briefly, and spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, with eggs scattered and left unattended. Parental care is absent in the group.

Sexual dimorphism in the scabripinnis complex is typically modest; gravid females may appear noticeably fuller-bodied than males in breeding condition, which is generally the most reliable external distinction. No specific courtship display or territorial behaviour has been documented for this species.

Breeding

Astyanax joaovitori has not been reported in the aquarium hobby and no captive-breeding accounts exist in the literature or hobbyist press as of description. Based on the biology of close relatives within the Astyanax scabripinnis complex, breeding would be expected to follow the classic egg-scattering pattern common to small upland characids: spawning occurs among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, the eggs are non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, and both eggs and fry receive no parental care.

Paratypes collected at the type locality ranged from under 1 in to approximately 1.5 in SL, suggesting recruits were present in the population and that reproduction occurs within the upper Araguaia headwater system. Water conditions in the cerrado upland streams — moderate temperatures, clean and well-oxygenated water — would likely be the starting point for any future captive-breeding attempt.

In the aquarium

Astyanax joaovitori is not currently documented in the aquarium trade and no husbandry accounts are available. As a small upland characid from clear cerrado headwater streams, it would theoretically suit a species tank or a community of similarly sized, peaceful fish, maintained in clean, well-filtered water with moderate flow and a temperature range appropriate to the subtropical cerrado climate.

Given the species' restricted range in a Brazilian protected-area watershed and its absence from the hobby, it is unlikely to appear in mainstream fishkeeping in the near term. Any future collection for the trade would require appropriate Brazilian export permits, and conservation considerations around upland cerrado endemics should be taken into account before wild collection is considered.

Conservation

Astyanax joaovitori has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its type locality lies within or immediately adjacent to the Parque Nacional das Emas in Mato Grosso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant cerrado protected areas in Brazil, which offers some baseline protection to the watershed.

The upper rio Araguaia headwaters more broadly face pressures common to the cerrado biome: agricultural expansion, soy and cattle land conversion, stream channelisation, and altered hydrology. Upland stream endemics with restricted ranges are particularly vulnerable to catchment-level disturbance. No population surveys or conservation assessments specific to A. joaovitori are available, and it remains a data-poor species by any measure.
