Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax jordanensis was described by Vera Alcaraz, Pavanelli, and Bertaco in 2009 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is the middle rio Jacu, at approximately 25°37′S, 52°03′W, in the município de Candói, state of Paraná, Brazil — a tributary of the lower rio Jordão, which is itself a tributary of the lower rio Iguaçu. The species belongs to Astyanax (Baird & Girard, 1854), the largest genus within the family Characidae and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics.
Astyanax is a famously difficult genus. Hundreds of nominal species are recognised, but morphological variation across the group is often subtle and overlap in meristic characters is widespread. A. jordanensis is distinguished by a combination of characters that includes 35–38 lateral-line scales, 13–17 branched anal-fin rays, 10–11 dorsal soft rays, and a vertebral count of 34–37. Within the lower rio Iguaçu basin it can be separated from congeners by this meristic suite together with details of tooth and body proportions documented in the original description.
The specific epithet jordanensis refers to the rio Jordão, the drainage system in which the type locality sits, following the standard Latinised toponym convention.
Morphology
Astyanax jordanensis is a small characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL in males and unsexed specimens; females attain a somewhat larger maximum of approximately 3 in SL, while males in the type series averaged around 2 in SL, indicating a degree of sexual size dimorphism with females the larger sex. The body form follows the typical Astyanax pattern: moderately compressed laterally, deepest in the anterior third, tapering toward a forked caudal fin.
The species is benthopelagic in habit — occupying the lower water column and bottom zone of streams — which is consistent with the riverine microhabitats it occupies in Paraná. Fin counts that help identify it include 10–11 dorsal soft rays and 13–17 branched anal-fin rays, with the lateral line running through 35–38 scales. Like other Astyanax, it carries the characteristic double row of premaxillary teeth and a rounded adipose fin.
Males develop bony hooks on the dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins at sexual maturity — a feature seen across many Astyanax and thought to play a role in male-male interactions or in spawning contact with females. No striking external colour pattern has been described; the species is presumed to show the silvery body with a dark caudal peduncle spot typical of the genus.
Habitat
The species is known from the rio Jacu and the rio das Torres, two tributaries of the lower rio Jordão in the lower rio Iguaçu basin, Paraná, Brazil. Both are cool to warm Neotropical streams draining the subtropical highlands of southern Brazil. The rio Iguaçu system runs through the Paraná Plateau before dropping over the famous Iguaçu Falls; the lower basin below the falls forms a distinct ichthyofaunal unit with several endemic characids, of which A. jordanensis is one.
FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, tropical, benthopelagic inhabitant. No detailed habitat characterisation beyond the type-locality data has been published — the species is known only from the original type material — so water-chemistry parameters must be inferred from the broader lower Iguaçu drainage, which is characterised by clear to slightly turbid, well-oxygenated streams with substrates of sand, gravel, and cobble, shaded by gallery forest. Altitude at the type locality in Candói is roughly 2297–2953 ft above sea level, suggesting water temperatures moderate by Neotropical standards.
Feeding
The IUCN assessment provides the most detailed dietary information available for this species: gut-content analysis from the type series revealed a diet dominated by aquatic insects, with Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Gerridae (water striders), and larvae and pupae of Ceratopogonidae (biting midges) recorded. Terrestrial insects were also important, including Diptera (flies), Hymenoptera (ants and wasps), Lepidoptera (moths and caterpillars), and Coleoptera (beetles), indicating opportunistic feeding at or near the water surface as well as in the water column. Plant material was also detected in stomach contents.
This omnivorous, insect-heavy diet is characteristic of small Astyanax in flowing-water environments across South America, where allochthonous input from riparian forest provides a substantial proportion of the food base. The benthopelagic classification suggests the species also forages along the bottom for benthic invertebrates, consistent with the mayfly larvae and midge pupae recorded in its diet.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax jordanensis have been published. The species is inferred to follow the egg-scattering, open-water or plant-spawning strategy universal among Astyanax: males pursue females through the water column or among vegetation, and fertilisation is external with no pair bond formed. The presence of bony fin hooks in mature males — recorded for this species in the original description — is consistent with their role in spawning contact documented in other Astyanax: hooks on the anal fin may catch on the female's scales or fins during the spawning rush, briefly holding the pair in alignment during egg release.
Seasonal breeding cues in the lower Iguaçu are likely tied to rainfall and temperature cycles typical of subtropical southern Brazil, where water temperatures and flow levels shift meaningfully between the austral winter and summer. Whether A. jordanensis shows any preference for fine-leaved aquatic plants or spawning substrate within its stream environment is unknown from the literature.
Breeding
No captive-breeding accounts for Astyanax jordanensis have been published, and the species is not known to be established in the ornamental-fish trade. Breeding biology must therefore be extrapolated from the broader Astyanax template: egg-scattering with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation or over gravel, no parental care, and adults that will consume their own eggs if not separated from the spawning substrate.
In congeners kept in aquaria, breeding is typically triggered by a partial water change with slightly cooler water mimicking rainfall, followed by a rapid temperature rise. Eggs hatch in 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry are free-swimming within a further 24–48 hours, requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria or rotifers before progressing to nauplii and finely crushed flake. Given that A. jordanensis females apparently grow larger than males — reaching 3 in SL versus roughly 2 in SL in males — females would likely produce correspondingly larger clutches than smaller-bodied congeners, though this is speculative in the absence of direct data.
In the aquarium
Astyanax jordanensis is not a species currently available in the aquarium trade; it is known only from scientific collections and has not been maintained or bred in captivity as far as published literature records. Its small size (to roughly 3 in SL), active schooling nature typical of the genus, and undemanding omnivorous diet would make it a manageable aquarium subject if it were ever collected and established in captivity.
Any aquarium care would follow the general Astyanax template: a spacious tank with open swimming room and soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the subtropical range (approximately 64–75 °F, reflecting the elevated-altitude provenance of the type locality), good filtration, and a diet of live or frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality prepared foods. As a southern-Brazilian highland stream fish it would likely tolerate cooler temperatures better than many tropical tetras. In the absence of captive records, these parameters are inferred from habitat data and the care requirements of closely related Astyanax from comparable drainages.
Conservation
Astyanax jordanensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 18 May 2022, published 2023). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to Brazil (Paraná), restricted to the rio Jacu and rio das Torres tributaries of the lower rio Jordão basin, and is known only from the original type material — meaning the population size and trend are essentially unknown.
The LC listing reflects an absence of documented threats severe enough to trigger a threatened category rather than positive evidence of a healthy population. The lower rio Iguaçu basin has experienced significant hydrological modification through hydroelectric development, and the gallery-forest streams of the Paraná Plateau are subject to agricultural runoff and deforestation pressure. No current threats were specifically identified for this species in the IUCN assessment, but the lack of any records beyond the type series means that very little is actually known about its abundance or the condition of its stream habitat. The species occupies permanent inland rivers and streams classified as freshwater wetland habitat by the IUCN.
