Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax kullanderi was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1995. It belongs to Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, the largest and most species-rich genus in the family Characidae and one of the most widespread vertebrate genera in the Neotropics, occurring from the southern United States to Patagonia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Astyanax kullanderi Costa, 1995; as the species was described in Astyanax and has not been reassigned, no parenthetical authority is used.
The type locality is in the upper Rio das Mortes basin, Mato Grosso state, Brazil — part of the greater Rio Araguaia–Tocantins drainage of central Brazil. Like many Astyanax, the species is a member of a large, morphologically complex radiation in which species limits continue to be revised as phylogenetic and morphological work advances. No subspecies or geographic variants are currently recognised.
Morphology
Astyanax kullanderi is a moderately sized characid reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length according to FishBase data, placing it in the mid-range for the genus. Like other Astyanax it has the typical tetra body plan: laterally compressed, roughly fusiform, with a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and the toothed premaxilla characteristic of the family Characidae.
Detailed morphometric and meristic data for this species are not widely published in accessible secondary literature, and the original description by Costa (1995) remains the primary morphological reference. The species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of characters assessed at the time of description; specific coloration notes in publicly available sources are limited, though the genus typically presents a silvery body, often with a dark lateral stripe or a dark blotch at the caudal peduncle that is characteristic of many Astyanax.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Rio das Mortes basin, a tributary of the Rio Araguaia in Mato Grosso, Brazil. This region falls within the Cerrado biome — the vast tropical savanna of central Brazil — where rivers are characterised by clear to moderately clear water, sandy or gravel substrates, and seasonally fluctuating levels driven by distinct wet and dry seasons.
FishBase classifies Astyanax kullanderi as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species. Water conditions in the upper Rio das Mortes catchment are typically warm, with temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius and near-neutral pH, broadly consistent with FishBase summary data of approximately 77 °F and pH 7. As with most Cerrado stream fishes, seasonal flood-pulse dynamics shape resource availability and likely influence reproduction and feeding cycles throughout the year.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Astyanax kullanderi a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.4, placing it firmly in the omnivore category typical of the genus. Astyanax species as a group are opportunistic foragers, exploiting whatever food sources are seasonally available: small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects falling to the water surface, plant material, algae, and small fish.
No published dietary studies specific to A. kullanderi are available in accessible sources. By analogy with thoroughly studied congeners and the trophic level estimate, the species likely feeds on fine particulate organic matter, invertebrates, and plant material, taking food at multiple levels in the water column in keeping with its benthopelagic classification. In an aquarium context, Astyanax are generally undemanding and accept a wide variety of prepared and live or frozen foods.
Mating
No specific published observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax kullanderi are available. The genus as a whole is characterised by egg-scattering, non-guarding spawning strategies in which males and females release gametes among vegetation or over substrate with no subsequent parental involvement. Sexual dimorphism in Astyanax is typically subtle — females tend to be deeper-bodied when gravid — and courtship behaviour in the genus generally involves males pursuing ripe females, with spawning occurring in short, rapid rushes.
Like other characids from seasonally variable Cerrado rivers, reproduction is likely tied to the hydrological cycle, with spawning occurring during or shortly after the onset of the wet season when rising water temperatures and increased food availability stimulate breeding activity. These seasonal cues are well documented in related Astyanax from similar habitats.
Breeding
Astyanax kullanderi has not been reported in captive breeding accounts in the hobbyist literature reviewed for this article. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus, it is expected to be a typical egg-scattering characid: sexually mature adults would scatter small, non-adhesive or lightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate, with eggs hatching within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures and no parental care from either parent.
In captivity, closely related Astyanax species are bred by conditioning adults with live and frozen foods, separating a small group of adults into a bare or java-moss-lined breeding tank, and removing the adults promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry are typically free-swimming within a few days and accept infusoria, rotifers, and commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. These general protocols are likely applicable to A. kullanderi, though no specific data exist.
In the aquarium
Astyanax kullanderi is not a widely kept or commercially traded species; it does not appear in standard hobbyist literature as an established aquarium fish. Its introduction to the trade, if it has occurred at all, has been limited. Aquarists encountering this species or obtaining it through specialist importers could reasonably apply the husbandry parameters of its wild habitat: water temperatures around 75–79 °F, near-neutral pH, and moderate flow in a well-filtered aquarium.
As an Astyanax, it would be expected to be a robust, active, schooling fish best maintained in groups of six or more in a spacious aquarium with open swimming space and some planted cover. The genus is generally compatible with similarly sized peaceful community fish. For aquarists interested in keeping Cerrado ichthyofauna, A. kullanderi represents a modestly sized and likely hardy species, though hobbyist experience with it specifically is essentially undocumented.
Conservation
Astyanax kullanderi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The Least Concern listing reflects the absence of evidence for population decline at a rate or magnitude that would qualify the species for a threatened category under IUCN criteria, and a range that — while restricted to the upper Rio das Mortes basin — does not in itself trigger concern at the level of geographic restriction applied to narrow endemics.
The Cerrado is, however, one of the world's most threatened tropical biomes. Extensive conversion of savanna to agriculture, particularly soy and cattle ranching, has degraded rivers throughout the Rio das Mortes catchment. Deforestation of riparian corridors, sedimentation, and agrochemical runoff are documented stressors for stream fish communities across the Cerrado. While A. kullanderi's status is currently Least Concern, the broader context of Cerrado habitat loss warrants continued monitoring of stream-fish communities in the upper Araguaia–Tocantins watershed.
