Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax leoni was described by Ruiz-C., Román-Valencia, and Taphorn in 2023 as part of a systematic revision of the Astyanax orthodus species-group. The original description was based on ten specimens collected from the Río Tavara, approximately 1 mi from the town of Quincemil in the Cusco Department of Peru, which serves as the type locality. Characters used in the diagnosis included a combination of morphometric, meristic, and osteological data.
The species is placed within Astyanax, one of the most speciose genera of Neotropical characids and a group with a long and complicated taxonomic history. ETYFish documentation notes that some sources have treated members of the Astyanax assemblage within the family Acestrorhamphidae, recognising a split from the broader Characidae; however, the top-level family assignment follows Characidae as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes. The species belongs to the orthodus species-group, a cluster of morphologically similar Astyanax characterised in part by their shared meristic profile and stripe patterns.
Morphology
Astyanax leoni is a moderately sized characid reaching a maximum recorded length of 4.5 in standard length in male or unsexed specimens. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, the typical Astyanax form suited to active swimming in flowing river environments. Meristic counts recorded for the species include 9 dorsal soft rays, 25–27 anal soft rays, and 36–38 vertebrae.
The most useful diagnostic features are in the pigmentation pattern. A rod-shaped stripe marks the caudal peduncle and extends anteriorly above a silver lateral stripe, a configuration uncommon in the wider genus. Short chevron markings cover approximately two scale series and are distributed along the entire body length rather than being restricted to the anterior flanks. A caudal peduncle spot extends anteriorly beyond the tip of the dorsal fin — another character used to separate this species from other members of the orthodus group. A silver lateral stripe is present, as in many Astyanax, but the combination of these overlying markings gives A. leoni a recognisably distinct appearance within the group.
Habitat
Astyanax leoni is known from the Río Tavara near Quincemil, a locality in the Cusco Department of the southern Peruvian Amazon, within the upper Madre de Dios River drainage and thus within the broader Amazon Basin. The upper Madre de Dios is a fast-draining system descending from the eastern Andean slopes; waters in this zone are typically clear to moderately turbid, cool-to-warm depending on elevation, and moderately oxygenated.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, occupying the lower and mid water column of riverine environments. Beyond the type locality record and the general drainage assignment, detailed habitat data — substrate preferences, microhabitat use, associated vegetation, and seasonal variation — have not been published for this species. Given its geographic position at the Andean–Amazonian transition zone, it likely experiences moderate water temperatures and moderate to good current, but these parameters have not been formally recorded for the collection site.
Feeding
No published dietary study exists for Astyanax leoni. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.4 (se), estimated by comparison with size-matched relatives rather than from gut-content analysis. This trophic level is consistent with the opportunistic omnivory typical of Astyanax broadly: small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, plant material, and organic detritus taken from the water column and substrate.
In the aquarium, A. leoni can be assumed to accept the range of foods typical for small to medium Astyanax: good-quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp, and some vegetable matter. A varied diet supports condition and colour; like other tetras it benefits from multiple small feedings rather than single large meals. Because no specific feeding observations from the wild exist, aquarium care recommendations for this species are extrapolated from the broader Astyanax husbandry literature.
Mating
No behavioural observations of mating in Astyanax leoni have been published. As a member of Astyanax, it is expected to follow the open egg-scattering pattern characteristic of the genus: males pursue females and spawning occurs in bursts with eggs released freely into the water column or among fine-leaved vegetation. There is no parental care, and adults will consume eggs given the opportunity.
Male Astyanax generally become noticeably slimmer than gravid females when both sexes are in breeding condition, and some species display intensified coloration or minor differences in fin development. Whether A. leoni shows any analogous secondary sexual characters has not been documented, but the basic reproductive mode — scatter-spawn among vegetation without guarding — is consistent across the genus.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Astyanax leoni are currently documented in the aquarium literature. The general Astyanax breeding protocol provides a reasonable starting framework: a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with bundles of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, slightly cooler water to trigger spawning, and a pair or small group of well-conditioned adults. Eggs are adhesive and scattered among vegetation; the adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs.
Incubation and larval development timescales have not been recorded for this species specifically. By analogy with other Astyanax of similar size, incubation at tropical temperatures is likely in the range of 24–48 hours, with free-swimming fry requiring very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. As a recently described and apparently rarely kept species, practical breeding information remains sparse.
In the aquarium
Astyanax leoni is not widely established in the hobby and is unlikely to be readily available from mainstream retailers. As a mid-to-large Astyanax from an Andean-fringe river system, it would be expected to do well in a spacious aquarium with good filtration and moderate current, kept in a shoal of six or more individuals to express natural schooling behaviour and reduce inter-individual stress.
Water parameters can be guided by the species' origin in the upper Madre de Dios drainage: soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water in the range of roughly 72–79 °F would be a reasonable starting point, though no formal husbandry data exist. The species' moderate size (to nearly 4.5 in SL) means tankmates should be chosen accordingly — smaller tetras may be at risk of being outcompeted or harassed. Peaceful, similarly sized characids, peaceful cichlids, and robust catfishes would make suitable companions. Because the species is rarely kept, aquarists who do obtain it would be contributing genuinely useful husbandry observations to the broader community.
Conservation
Astyanax leoni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species was described only in 2023, and no formal conservation evaluation has yet been completed. FishBase records the species as Not Evaluated and notes a high resilience score with a minimum population doubling time of fewer than 15 months, a figure based on comparable relatives rather than on direct population data.
The species is currently known only from the Río Tavara near Quincemil in the Cusco Department of Peru, making it an apparent Peruvian endemic with a restricted known range. The upper Madre de Dios region faces pressures including artisanal and illegal gold mining, deforestation for agriculture, and road development associated with the Interoceanic Highway corridor. Whether any of these pressures directly affect A. leoni at its type locality is not documented. Given the species' recent description and limited collection data, its true range, population size, and conservation status remain uncertain; future field surveys in the upper Madre de Dios drainage may reveal either a broader distribution or confirm the restricted range implied by current records.
