Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax leonidas was formally described by María de las Mercedes Azpelicueta, Jorge Casciotta, and Adriana Almirón in 2002, based on material collected from the Paraná River basin in northeastern Argentina. The species was described in a paper treating two new species of Astyanax from that drainage; it was named alongside Astyanax troya, with which it shares similar meristic counts. The valid name as established at description is Astyanax leonidas Azpelicueta, Casciotta & Almirón, 2002.
Subsequent molecular and morphological revisions of the subfamily Stethaprioninae and allied lineages have led some authorities to recognise the genus Psalidodon for a large group of South American characids previously placed in Astyanax. Under that scheme the species is treated as Psalidodon leonidas, a placement reflected in FishBase. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for valid names on this site; readers should note that the nomenclature of this complex group remains actively debated and the generic assignment may change again with ongoing phylogenetic work.
Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae and the order Characiformes — the characins — the dominant freshwater fish radiation across the Neotropics. The genus itself is one of the largest in Characidae, with well over a hundred described species ranging from Mexico and Central America through virtually all of tropical and subtropical South America.
Morphology
Astyanax leonidas is a diminutive characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in, the figure reported for male or unsexed specimens in FishBase. Like most members of the genus it is a laterally compressed, fusiform fish with the typical characid body plan: a relatively deep body, a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal, and the characteristic toothy jaws that give the order Characiformes much of its ecological diversity.
The colouration is the understated silver typical of small stream tetras in this genus: the flanks are silvery, often with a faint lateral stripe or a darker shoulder spot, and the fins are largely hyaline or faintly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism in body depth and proportions is common across Astyanax species, with females often becoming notably deeper-bellied when gravid. Detailed meristic and morphometric data distinguishing A. leonidas from its congeners, including A. troya, were established in the original description and relate to counts of scales, fin rays, and the proportions of body parts — the fine distinctions that define species within this morphologically conservative genus.

Habitat
Astyanax leonidas is endemic to the Paraná River basin in northeastern Argentina. The Paraná is one of the great rivers of South America, draining a vast subtropical lowland basin shared by Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay before meeting the Uruguay River to form the Río de la Plata. Within that extensive system, A. leonidas was described from material gathered in Argentina and is considered a relatively small-ranged endemic within the basin rather than a wide-ranging occupant of the whole drainage.
Specific microhabitat data for this species are not well documented in the accessible literature, but small Astyanax of this size class in the Paraná basin typically occupy slower-flowing or standing-water habitats within the floodplain system — backwater lagoons, stream margins with emergent vegetation, and the quieter margins of tributary streams. Feeding
Like most small Astyanax, A. leonidas is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, crustaceans, insect larvae, plant material, and organic detritus as available in its floodplain environment. Members of the genus have been studied intensively in other parts of their range and consistently show a broad, flexible diet that shifts with season, flood cycle, and local food availability — a generalist strategy suited to the dynamic, flood-pulse environments of large South American river basins.
No specific stomach-content or foraging studies for A. leonidas appear in the accessible literature. In the aquarium, small Astyanax of this size class accept a wide range of standard foods — good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm — and present no particular feeding challenges.
Mating
Astyanax species are egg-scattering open spawners. Males pursue females and spawning occurs with the pair in close lateral contact, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously into the water column. Eggs are non-adhesive or weakly adhesive and fall among fine-leaved plants, leaf litter, or submerged vegetation; no pair bond is formed and there is no parental care at any stage.
In seasonally flooded systems like the Paraná basin, spawning in many characids is triggered or amplified by the onset of the flood season, when rising water temperatures, increased food availability, and the expansion of vegetated flooded habitat all converge. Specific reproductive studies for A. leonidas have not been located in the accessible literature, but this general Astyanax reproductive mode is well supported across the genus.
Breeding
No dedicated breeding reports for Astyanax leonidas in captivity have been located. The general approach for small Astyanax in the aquarium follows the standard egg-scattering tetra protocol: a conditioned group of adults is introduced to a bare or fine-plant-furnished spawning tank, spawning occurs in the early morning, and the adults are removed promptly to prevent egg predation. The non-adhesive eggs settle among the substrate or plants and hatch within 24–48 hours depending on temperature, with the larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later.
First foods for the fry are infusoria and other microfoods, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered prepared foods as they grow. Because this species has rarely if ever appeared in the hobbyist trade, practical breeding accounts are absent; anyone successfully spawning it would be working largely from first principles applied to the genus more broadly.
In the aquarium
Astyanax leonidas is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It has not entered regular trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialist South American fish enthusiasts or scientific institutions. The description given here is therefore largely inferential, based on the biology of comparably sized Astyanax species and the general requirements of small floodplain characids from subtropical Argentina.
Small Astyanax of this type are hardy, active schooling fish that do well in groups of six or more in a well-filtered aquarium of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length. A subtropical temperature range — roughly 64–79 °F reflecting the seasonal variation of the Paraná basin — is appropriate, and the species should tolerate a broad pH range centred on neutral. Tankmates should be peaceful species of similar size; in a community setting these fish occupy the middle and upper water column and are not aggressive toward other species.
Anyone acquiring this species would be keeping a genuinely rare fish with minimal documented husbandry literature, and careful observation and record-keeping would be a genuine contribution to the hobby's collective knowledge of the South American Astyanax fauna.
Conservation
Astyanax leonidas has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal conservation evaluation for the species has been located in the accessible literature.
The Paraná River basin, while large and still substantially intact in parts, faces ongoing pressure from agriculture, dam construction, channelisation, and floodplain modification throughout its Argentine and Brazilian extent. The Paraná floodplain ichthyofauna is diverse and includes a number of narrowly distributed endemics whose conservation status is poorly known. For a small species described from a restricted portion of a large, human-modified basin, the precautionary approach would be to gather more distributional and abundance data before concluding that the species faces no significant threat.
Because A. leonidas is absent from the aquarium trade, hobbyist collection pressure is not a factor in its conservation. The relevant conservation actions are habitat protection and continued systematic survey work in the Argentine Paraná basin to establish where the species actually occurs and in what numbers.
