Astyanax longior is a small characid from the upper Amazon River basin of Peru, known from its type locality in the Huallaga River drainage near Moyabamba. Described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1878 under the name Tetragonopterus longior, it belongs to one of the most species-rich genera of Neotropical freshwater fishes, and its biology in the wild remains poorly documented. Data on its distribution, population status, and ecology are sparse enough that no formal IUCN assessment has been completed.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax longior was described by the American paleontologist and ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1878, as part of his synopsis of fishes collected from the Peruvian Amazon by Professor James Orton. Cope placed it in the genus Tetragonopterus as Tetragonopterus longior; subsequent revisions transferred the species to Astyanax, and it is treated under that name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The parenthetical authority, (Cope, 1878), reflects the generic transfer from Cope's original placement.

Astyanax is among the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, encompassing several hundred species across Central and South America. The genus has been subject to ongoing revision, and species boundaries within it — particularly among the many small-bodied, superficially similar Amazonian forms — are not always well resolved. Astyanax longior is one of numerous members known principally from type material and from few subsequent collections, making a full systematic evaluation difficult in the absence of modern molecular data.

Morphology

Astyanax longior is a small tetra estimated at approximately 1–1.5 in in length. Like other members of the genus it is expected to carry the characteristic characid body plan: moderately compressed and deep-bodied, with a terminal mouth, an adipose fin between the dorsal and the caudal, and the small conical teeth typical of omnivorous Astyanax.

Beyond these broad characters, detailed morphological data for this species are not available in the published literature accessible from current sources. The specific epithet longior is Latin for "longer" or "more elongated," suggesting that Cope regarded the body proportions as comparatively slender relative to allied species known to him at the time. No photographic records or detailed meristic counts have been located in current databases.

Habitat

The type locality of Astyanax longior is Moyabamba, on the Huallaga River in Peru. The Huallaga is a major tributary of the Marañón, which in turn feeds the upper Amazon, placing this species within the upper Amazon River basin. Moyabamba lies in the high jungle zone of the San Martín region at moderate elevation, where streams are typically clear to slightly turbid, well-oxygenated, and flow over rocky or sandy substrates.

No specific water-chemistry data for the collection site have been recovered from available sources. Based on the geography of the upper Huallaga drainage — a highland to mid-elevation river system with a seasonally variable discharge — temperatures are likely cooler than typical lowland Amazonian habitats, and the water may be soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral, though this is inferred from regional context rather than measured values. The species has not been reported from additional localities beyond the type.

Feeding

No diet studies have been published for Astyanax longior specifically. Across the genus, Astyanax species are broadly omnivorous, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae, plant material, algae, and detritus in proportion to local availability. Gut-content studies on other Astyanax from Amazonian tributaries consistently reveal a mixed diet weighted toward invertebrates and plant matter, shifting with season and habitat.

In the aquarium, members of this genus typically accept a wide range of prepared foods — flake, pellets, and small granules — alongside frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. A varied diet is recommended for condition and colour. Because so little is known about A. longior's ecology, aquarists keeping specimens should treat it as a generalist omnivore consistent with genus-wide expectations.

Mating

No observations of courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Astyanax longior. Astyanax species are generally egg-scattering open spawners; males pursue females into fine-leaved vegetation or open water, and eggs are scattered and fertilised without pair bonding. No parental care is given, and adults may consume their own eggs opportunistically.

Sexual dimorphism in the genus is typically subtle: gravid females tend to be fuller-bodied, particularly noticeable from above or when seen side-by-side with males. Spawning in Amazonian characins is commonly linked to the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels and increased food availability signal reproductive readiness, though whether A. longior follows this pattern is unknown.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Astyanax longior has not been documented in available hobbyist or scientific literature. By analogy with other small Astyanax, breeding would likely follow the standard characid pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or open substrate, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and a hatching period of one to three days at tropical temperatures.

In practice, any aquarist who obtained specimens would be advised to condition them on live and frozen foods, offer a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, slightly raise the temperature, and remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry of small Astyanax generally accept infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp within a week.

In the aquarium

Astyanax longior is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not available through normal trade channels. It is known from scientific collections and is unlikely to be encountered by aquarists in practice. Were specimens to become available, the care requirements would be broadly similar to other small Astyanax from Peruvian upland drainages: a spacious, well-filtered tank with open swimming room, soft to moderately hard water at slightly cool tropical temperatures, and a mixed diet of prepared and live or frozen foods.

Small Astyanax are generally peaceful schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more; they make good community residents with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. The sparsity of data means that any keeper of this species would be in a position to contribute genuinely new observations on its behaviour, colour, and reproductive biology.

Conservation

Astyanax longior has not received a formal assessment on the IUCN Red List. FishBase records the species as Data Deficient, reflecting the absence of sufficient information about its population size, distribution extent, and threats. The species is known from a single locality — the Huallaga River near Moyabamba — and has not been widely reported from subsequent collections, though this may reflect collecting effort as much as genuine rarity.

The upper Huallaga basin in the San Martín region of Peru has experienced significant deforestation and agricultural conversion in recent decades, and Amazonian headwater fish communities in this area face ongoing pressure from habitat degradation, introduced species, and changes in water quality. Whether A. longior persists at its type locality, and in what numbers, is not currently known. Surveys targeting the upper Huallaga ichthyofauna would be needed to determine the species' status with confidence.
