Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax longirhinus was described by Julio Cesar Garavello and Flávio Alicino Sampaio in 2010 on the basis of material collected from the Rio Iguaçu basin in Paraná State, Brazil. It was placed in the genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, the most speciose genus in the family Characidae, with several hundred recognised species distributed across the Americas from the southern United States to Argentina.
A molecular and morphological revision published in Zootaxa in 2019 concluded that A. longirhinus is a junior synonym of Astyanax gymnogenys Eigenmann, 1911 — the original type series apparently having contained a mixture of Astyanax species from across the upper, middle, and lower Iguaçu. Whether that synonymy is broadly accepted or under further review, Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) remains the nomenclatural authority; researchers treating A. longirhinus as a valid species or as a synonym of A. gymnogenys should consult the most current edition of that catalogue. The Iguaçu system is a celebrated centre of endemic characid diversity, and the taxonomy of its Astyanax fauna remains an active research area.
Morphology
The species reaches a recorded maximum of 7.5 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase — large for a river Astyanax — though field material suggests most individuals are smaller. The most conspicuous diagnostic feature is the elongated, projecting snout that inspired the specific epithet; this character separates it from the majority of the Iguaçu Astyanax assemblage, in which rounded or only slightly pointed snouts prevail.
As with most Astyanax, the body form is laterally compressed and moderately deep, with the dorsal profile arching distinctly behind the occiput. The silvery flanks may carry a faint lateral stripe and a dark caudal spot, and the fins are largely hyaline. The dentition is the multi-cusped molariform type typical of the genus. Detailed meristic and morphometric data — scale rows, lateral-line counts, fin-ray formulae — were provided in the original description; researchers requiring these should consult the 2010 Garavello and Sampaio paper directly.
Habitat
Astyanax longirhinus is confined to the Iguaçu River drainage of Paraná State, southern Brazil. The Rio Iguaçu is one of the most hydrologically distinctive river systems in South America: separated from the Paraná mainstream by the Iguaçu Falls and cut off from direct faunal exchange with adjacent drainages, it has evolved a highly endemic fish fauna. Collection records for A. longirhinus span the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the basin, and at least one survey documents the species from the Areia River tributary within the Iguaçu drainage in Paraná.
The Iguaçu basin at the latitudes inhabited by this species is characterised by fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams draining Araucaria (monkey-puzzle pine) forests and subtropical highland terrain. Water temperatures in this southern system are cooler and more seasonally variable than in lowland Amazonian drainages; rocky substrates, riffles, and moderate to high current are typical. No formal water-chemistry parameters have been published for A. longirhinus specifically, but the broader Iguaçu system tends toward moderate pH and soft to moderately mineralised water consistent with its crystalline-rock headwaters.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study has been published for Astyanax longirhinus. Members of the genus Astyanax are generally described as opportunistic omnivores: in river systems they commonly consume small invertebrates (insect larvae, aquatic insects fallen at the surface, microcrustaceans), algae and detritus, and plant material including seeds and fruits carried into the water by riparian vegetation.
The large adult size (to 7.5 in SL) and robust dentition of A. longirhinus suggest a diet in which macroinvertebrates and possibly small fish play a role alongside plant material, though this is inference from guild membership rather than documented observation. Any aquarist keeping this species should offer a varied diet covering protein-rich live or frozen foods alongside vegetable matter and quality prepared foods.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour have been published for Astyanax longirhinus. Astyanax species are broadly characterised as group-spawning, egg-scattering tetras with no pair bond or parental investment. Males typically congregate around females, pursuing and nudging them into releasing eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, and fertilisation is external.
In many Astyanax studied in the field, spawning activity peaks during the austral spring and early summer, corresponding to rising water temperatures, increasing photoperiod, and the onset of the rainy season that inundates floodplain vegetation and provides spawning habitat. Whether A. longirhinus follows this seasonal rhythm — as would be expected given the seasonal climate of Paraná State — has not been formally documented.
Breeding
Astyanax longirhinus has not been bred in captivity under documented aquarium conditions, and no breeding account appears in the hobby or scientific literature. The following therefore describes the reproductive pattern expected for an Astyanax of this type, drawn from better-known congeners.
Typical Astyanax are egg-scattering, open-water or plant-spawning tetras with no parental care. Spawning pairs or groups scatter small, non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over gravel; the adults take no notice of the eggs thereafter and will eat them given the opportunity. Eggs hatch in two to three days at typical subtropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming a few days later, first feeding on infusoria and progressively larger live foods. For the infrequent aquarist who attempts to spawn this species, conditioning on live and frozen foods, a slight temperature rise to simulate seasonal cues, and prompt removal of adults after spawning are standard practice with the genus. Breeding temperature consistent with Characidae general guidance would be in the range of 72–79 °F; pH slightly acidic to neutral, with soft to moderately hard water.
In the aquarium
Astyanax longirhinus is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to appear in shops outside specialist South American cichlid and characin circles or scientific collections. Its large adult size — approaching 7.5 in SL — places it in the category of display or specimen fish rather than a community tetra, and a suitably large aquarium of at least 59 in in length would be appropriate for a group of adults.
As an Iguaçu endemic from a fast-flowing, well-oxygenated system, the species would benefit from robust filtration, moderate to strong current, and cool subtropical temperatures (around 64–75 °F) rather than the warm lowland tropical settings used for most aquarium tetras. Tankmates should be selected accordingly — other robust subtropical characins or similarly sized species capable of tolerating cooler, faster water. Given the species' rarity in the hobby, care information is sparse and aquarists who obtain specimens are advised to research the Iguaçu fish fauna and the broader Astyanax literature for guidance. Conservation
Astyanax longirhinus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The Iguaçu River basin, while protected in part by the Iguaçu National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on the Brazilian–Argentine border, faces substantial pressures from hydroelectric dams, agriculture, and habitat modification across much of its length outside the park.
The Rio Iguaçu fish fauna is globally significant for its high endemism — estimated at over 70% of species being found nowhere else — and several endemic characids have been lost or severely reduced in the upper basin above the cascade of dams that now fragments the river. The taxonomic uncertainty surrounding A. longirhinus (and its possible synonymy with A. gymnogenys) complicates conservation assessments; in practice, the conservation of this taxon depends on the broader health of the Iguaçu drainage and the protection of its still-intact tributary streams.
