Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax lorien was described by Angela M. Zanata, Robert Burger, and Priscila Camelier in 2018 as one of two new Astyanax species from the upper rio Paraguaçu basin in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. The holotype (MZUSP 123398, 2.5 in SL) was collected from a tributary of the upper Paraguaçu system. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes) is the authority for the valid name Astyanax lorien Zanata, Burger & Camelier, 2018.
The species is placed within the Astyanax scabripinnis complex, a large and morphologically variable assemblage of small characids distributed broadly across upland river systems of eastern and southeastern Brazil. Members of the complex are notoriously difficult to delimit on external characters alone, and molecular and meristic data together support the recognition of A. lorien as a distinct species within this group. The broader genus Astyanax is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics and belongs to the family Characidae.
Morphology
Astyanax lorien is a small characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in SL. Like other members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the typical silver-bodied, dark-lateral-banded habitus of the group. The branched anal-fin ray count ranges from 15 to 21, a key meristic character used in the original description to help distinguish A. lorien from closely related taxa.
Males of A. lorien bear small bony hooks on all fins — pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, anal, and caudal — a secondary sexual character documented in the original description. These hooks, common in several Astyanax and related characids, are thought to function during spawning behaviour. Beyond their taxonomic significance they also serve as a reliable means of sexing live fish in the aquarium.
Habitat
In the wild, Astyanax lorien is known from transparent and blackwater tributaries of the upper rio Paraguaçu basin at approximately 1,0 ft elevation in the Chapada Diamantina domain of Bahia, Brazil. The streams it inhabits are both perennial and torrential in character, reflecting the highland plateau environment of the Chapada Diamantina. The Paraguaçu is one of the major river systems draining Bahia and has a number of endemic fish species associated with its upper reaches.
The clear and blackwater nature of the streams suggests substrate of rock, sand, or leaf litter rather than fine silts, and the torrential sections imply well-oxygenated, fast-moving water. The highland elevation and the stream character of the Chapada Diamantina likely result in water that is cool relative to lowland Bahian streams, soft, and mildly acidic to near-neutral in pH, though specific physicochemical parameters for the type localities were not captured in sources available at the time of writing.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding studies are available for Astyanax lorien. Based on its membership in the Astyanax scabripinnis complex and the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus more broadly, A. lorien is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore. Members of this complex typically exploit a mix of allochthonous material (invertebrates and plant matter falling into streams), aquatic invertebrates, and algae or detritus depending on local availability.
In the aquarium, fish of this genus readily accept a variety of foods including high-quality dry flake and micropellets, frozen Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp, as well as fine live foods. A varied diet that includes some live or frozen invertebrate component supports condition and natural behaviour.
Mating
Specific observations on the mating behaviour of Astyanax lorien are not documented in the available literature. As an Astyanax and a member of the scabripinnis complex, it is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the reproductive guild typical of the great majority of small characids.
The presence of bony hooks on all fins in males is consistent with a contact or clasping role during spawning, as described for other hook-bearing characids. Males with well-developed hooks are presumed to use them to maintain position alongside a female during the brief spawning embrace in which eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into open water or among fine substrate and vegetation.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts specific to Astyanax lorien have been published. By analogy with other Astyanax scabripinnis complex members that have been bred in aquaria, the standard approach for small highland characids is applicable: a well-conditioned group of adults, slightly cooler and softer water to trigger spawning, and a tank containing fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or a mesh bottom to protect the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs from predation by the parents.
Eggs are scattered in small numbers during the spawning embrace and typically hatch within 24–72 hours at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially small and require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care is provided, and adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs.
In the aquarium
Astyanax lorien is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialist or scientific collections. Its description in 2018 from a geographically restricted highland drainage makes commercial availability improbable in the near term. Should specimens become available, the care requirements are expected to follow those of other members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex: a schooling, active fish that does best in groups, in a well-oxygenated tank with moderate flow reflecting its torrential stream origins.
Water conditions appropriate to the Chapada Diamantina highlands — cooler temperatures relative to typical tropical community tanks (perhaps 68–75 °F), soft to moderately soft water, and near-neutral to mildly acidic pH — would be a reasonable starting point, though specific parameters have not been published. As with all small Astyanax, it would be peaceful with similarly sized tankmates and should be fed a varied omnivore diet.
Conservation
Astyanax lorien has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2018 from a restricted range in the upper rio Paraguaçu basin of Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, it is a recent addition to the known fauna and formal assessment has not yet been conducted as of 2026.
The Chapada Diamantina highlands support a number of range-restricted endemic species, and the water quality and hydrology of the streams there are sensitive to land-use change in the catchment. The restricted geographic range of A. lorien — confined to tributaries of the upper Paraguaçu basin — means any degradation of those streams would have a disproportionate impact on the species. Continued survey work and eventual IUCN assessment are warranted for this and the other newly described endemics of the region.
