Astyanax mexicanus is one of the most scientifically celebrated small fishes in the world — a single species that presents in two radically different forms: a pigmented, fully sighted surface morph found across rivers and streams of eastern Mexico and the lower United States, and a pale, eyeless cave morph confined to the darkness of limestone cave systems in the Sierra de El Abra and related karst formations of Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, the species maintains large, stable populations across a broad range and has become a model organism for evolutionary and developmental biology, with the cave population's repeated independent losses of eyes and pigment revealing how evolution dismantles complex structures.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax mexicanus was originally described by De Filippi in 1853. It belongs to the family Characidae and the large, widespread genus Astyanax, which ranges from the southwestern United States through Central America and into South America. A major revision by Schmitter-Soto (2017) in the Journal of Natural History addressed the taxonomy of Astyanax across Central and North America, formally recognising the diversity within the group and clarifying species boundaries.

The cave-dwelling population, long treated as a separate species (Anoptichthys jordani) and later as a subspecies (A. m. jordani), is now understood to be the same species as the surface form and is not maintained as a distinct taxon by most authorities. The cave and surface morphs interbreed in transitional zones, producing intermediate individuals, and genetic evidence confirms they are populations of a single species that colonised caves independently on multiple occasions. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name Astyanax mexicanus (De Filippi, 1853).

Morphology

The surface form of Astyanax mexicanus is a typical small characin: silvery, laterally compressed, and reaching up to 4.5 in total length (common length around 3 in TL), with the standard characid layout of an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. Body colouration is silver with a faint yellow or olive cast dorsally and a narrow dark lateral stripe that is most visible on fresh or stressed specimens. The eye is fully developed and functional, and melanin pigmentation is normal.

The cave form presents a dramatically different phenotype. Eyes are vestigial or entirely absent — reduced to small internal remnants covered by skin — and body pigmentation is largely absent, giving the fish a pink-white appearance with the red of underlying blood vessels visible. The lateral-line system is hypertrophied, with enlarged neuromasts that compensate for the absence of vision in navigating the lightless cave environment. Despite these profound differences, the two forms are interfertile, and hybrid individuals with intermediate eye size can be produced experimentally.

Sex determination in the surface form follows the typical characid pattern: females are deeper-bodied when ripe and generally somewhat larger than males, while males may show small hooks on the anal fin rays used to grip the female during spawning.

Habitat

The surface form inhabits rocky and sandy-bottomed pools, backwaters, creeks, rivers, and freshwater springs of eastern and central Mexico and the lower United States. The IUCN records its native range as eastern and central Mexico and the lower Rio Grande, Pecos, and Nueces river drainages in Texas and New Mexico. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and potamodromous, noting a subtropical latitudinal range and a tendency to migrate toward warmer areas in winter. Populations are established on the Edwards Plateau of Texas, including karst spring systems.

The cave form is restricted to cave streams and pools within the limestone karst of the Sierra de El Abra and associated formations in Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí, Mexico. These systems are characterised by complete darkness, relatively stable temperatures, and reduced food input compared to surface environments. The two forms exist in geographic proximity in some areas, with cave-surface hybrids occurring where cave streams meet surface drainages.

Water conditions across the surface range vary but generally fall within temperate to subtropical parameters befitting the species' wide distribution through northern Mexico and the Texas borderlands.

Feeding

Astyanax mexicanus is an omnivore with a broad diet. FishBase records the natural diet as insects, crustaceans, and worms. The species forages in the benthic and mid-water zones, exploiting a range of invertebrate prey as well as organic detritus and plant material. The potamodromous movement pattern noted by FishBase likely reflects seasonal tracking of prey availability and water temperature in the river systems it inhabits.

The cave form, in a food-poor environment, has evolved enhanced foraging sensitivity through the enlarged lateral-line neuromasts, allowing it to detect water movement from small invertebrates in total darkness. Laboratory studies show cave fish also consume more food per unit time when food is available, consistent with the boom-or-bust food availability in cave systems.

In the aquarium, the species is unfussy: it accepts high-quality flake and small pellet foods readily, and benefits from frozen or live supplements such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Both morphs feed aggressively and should be offered sufficient food to prevent fin-nipping driven by competition.

Mating

Astyanax mexicanus is an egg-scattering characin with no parental care. Spawning is triggered by environmental cues including temperature change and water changes, and occurs nocturnally according to breeding studies; both the surface and cave morphs respond to similar reproductive stimuli when provided with appropriate conditions. Males court receptive females actively and spawning involves the pair swimming in close contact while eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.

The cave form is not entirely reproductively isolated from the surface form. In experimental settings and in natural transitional zones where cave and surface waters intermix, the two forms interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring with intermediate phenotypes — evidence that divergence is ongoing but not yet complete. In cave populations, sexual selection through visual display is presumably absent or reduced, and courtship is likely mediated primarily through lateral-line and olfactory cues rather than colour and fin display.

Breeding

In captivity, the surface form of Astyanax mexicanus spawns readily under conditions typical for small egg-scattering characins. A temperature increase or water change can trigger spawning, and nocturnal spawning is most common. Eggs are adhesive and may be hidden among fine-leaved plants, deposited on the substrate, or placed in crevices — FishBase notes that eggs are hidden in crevices in the wild. The adults do not guard the eggs and will eat them if given the opportunity; spawning mops or dense plant cover allows some eggs to escape predation, but separating the adults after spawning is the most reliable approach.

Incubation time is temperature-dependent and typical for the family. Fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching and accept infusoria and commercial liquid fry foods initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow. The cave form can also be bred in captivity under the same regime, and the species' role as a model organism has meant that laboratory breeding protocols are well established. Growth to juvenile size is relatively rapid.

Both morphs are produced in the hobby; the cave (blind) form has been in captivity for many decades and is bred commercially, making captive-sourced stock the norm.

In the aquarium

Astyanax mexicanus is a hardy, adaptable aquarium fish that tolerates a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for beginners. Both the surface (sighted) and cave (blind) forms are available in the hobby; the blind form is considerably more common in the trade. A small school of six or more individuals is preferable — kept in smaller numbers the fish can be fin-nippy toward tankmates, a trait typical of the genus. They are active, fast-moving swimmers that use the full water column.

Tank size should allow open swimming space: an aquarium of 31.5 in or more in length suits an adult group. Water chemistry is flexible, reflecting the species' native range across a wide variety of river and spring habitats; temperatures in the mid-teens to mid-20s Celsius are appropriate, and the species tolerates cooler water than many tropical fishes. The IUCN notes the species' presence in spring systems and karst environments where water conditions can be hard and alkaline, but it adapts readily to a broad range of pH and hardness.

Suitable tankmates include other robust, similarly sized fishes that can hold their own against occasional fin-nipping. Danios, barbs, larger tetras, and peaceful cichlids of appropriate size are workable companions. The blind cave form has particular appeal for biotope and oddity aquaria, and its lack of eyes is not a handicap in captivity — it navigates through its hypertrophied lateral-line system and is a highly competitive feeder despite its apparent disadvantage.

Conservation

Astyanax mexicanus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2013 based on an evaluation carried out in October 2011. The rationale cites a large extent of occurrence, a large number of subpopulations, a total adult population exceeding one million individuals, a stable population trend, and the absence of major threats across most of the range. The species is locally very abundant across its native range in eastern and central Mexico and the Texas and New Mexico drainages.

Local threats have been documented in parts of the range: the IUCN notes historical extirpation from portions of the Rio Grande in New Mexico due to habitat degradation caused by overgrazing, siltation, channelization, and water diversions. The species' aquarium trade value is minor rather than a conservation concern at population scale, given its abundance. The cave populations, while small and geographically restricted, benefit indirectly from the robust status of the surface form and from the species' captive representation in the hobby and in laboratories worldwide.

As one of the most intensively studied vertebrates in evolutionary biology, A. mexicanus benefits from unusually high scientific attention, which means ongoing monitoring of cave populations and continued interest in the karst systems they inhabit. Conservation of the cave form is ultimately tied to protection of the Sierra de El Abra cave systems and the groundwater quality that sustains them.
