Astyanax microlepis is a small, silver-flanked characid described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 from the La Vieja River of the Upper Cauca basin in Colombia. Endemic to the western Colombian Andes, it inhabits a mosaic of rivers, oxbow lakes, lagoons, and slow-current backwaters — a specialist of still and sluggish habitats within a geographically constrained watershed. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern, though it is considered a rare species and faces ongoing pressure from sugar-cane agriculture and deforestation in its limited range.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax microlepis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913, based on specimens collected at Piedra de Moler on the La Vieja River, a tributary of the Upper Cauca drainage in Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al.) confirms the valid name as Astyanax microlepis Eigenmann, 1913. Historical taxonomy placed the species at various times within broader characterizations of Astyanax and allied genera; modern treatments place it firmly within Characidae.

The genus Astyanax is one of the largest and most speciose genera of characid fishes, distributed across a vast range from northern Mexico through much of South America. It encompasses highly divergent ecotypes — including the famous cave-adapted, eye-reduced populations of Mexico — united by shared meristic and osteological characters. Astyanax microlepis is a strictly riverine, lowland-to-piedmont member of the genus, with no known cave or subterranean populations. Its closest relatives are other Andean-foothill and Cauca–Magdalena basin Astyanax species.

Morphology

Astyanax microlepis is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching a recorded maximum of 5 in standard length, though most individuals are substantially smaller; the species' common name references its relatively small scales. The body profile is typical of the genus: a fusiform shape with a slightly arched back, a blunt snout, and the forked tail shared by most characins.

Coloration in life is the generic silver-and-chrome pattern of many open-water Astyanax: bright silver flanks often with a faint lateral stripe or body-length iridescence, a darker dorsal surface, and a clear to lightly pigmented caudal fin. A dark humeral spot and a caudal spot — both characteristic of many Astyanax — may be present, though the precise pigmentation pattern within this species is not extensively documented in available sources. Females are generally deeper-bodied than males when gravid.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Colombia, confined to the Upper Cauca and Magdalena river basins in the western Andes and inter-Andean valleys. The type locality, Piedra de Moler on the La Vieja River (Upper Cauca), lies in a low-to-mid elevation piedmont zone subject to seasonal flooding. IUCN assessors note that the species occupies rivers, lagoons, small reservoirs, oxbow lakes, and slow-current backwaters where organic matter accumulates — essentially the quieter, more vegetated margins and off-channel habitats of the broader floodplain.

This preference for slow and still water distinguishes A. microlepis from the rheophilic Astyanax that characterize faster, rockier stream reaches in the Andes. Its habitat in the Cauca and Magdalena valleys has been severely modified by agriculture, particularly the expansion of sugar-cane cultivation in the fertile inter-Andean lowlands, and by deforestation of riparian corridors. The species is considered rare within its restricted range.

Feeding

IUCN records describe Astyanax microlepis as an omnivore with a broad natural diet encompassing algae, seeds, leaves, terrestrial and aquatic insects, and small fishes. This opportunistic feeding strategy is consistent with the foraging ecology of most mid-water Astyanax — generalists that exploit whatever food sources are seasonally abundant in their habitat, including allochthonous material (falling leaves, insects) during inundation periods.

The dietary breadth spanning plant material, invertebrates, and small vertebrates reflects the ecological flexibility common in floodplain characids. In oxbow lakes and slow backwaters, algal grazing and detritivory likely play a proportionally larger role than in faster-flowing channels, where drift insects are more available. Juveniles are probably primarily microinvertebrate feeders before transitioning to a more mixed adult diet.

Mating

Detailed courtship behaviour for Astyanax microlepis specifically has not been documented in available literature. The genus Astyanax broadly follows the egg-scattering mating system typical of Characidae: males court females with lateral displays and parallel swimming, with no territory establishment and no lasting pair bond. Spawning activity in many Astyanax species is cued by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, photoperiod changes, or the onset of seasonal rains — that correspond to the annual flood pulse in river-floodplain systems.

In floodplain species, the inundation season often triggers mass spawning migrations into flooded vegetation, where eggs are scattered among submerged plants and litter. Females are likely capable of multiple spawning events per season rather than releasing all eggs in a single batch.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Astyanax microlepis are available in hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with other members of the genus, breeding follows the standard Astyanax pattern: egg scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or substratum, with small, adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults will consume their own eggs and fry if not separated.

In the aquarium, Astyanax generally spawn readily when well-conditioned adults are placed over spawning mops or fine-leaved plants at temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius with a water change to simulate seasonal onset. Eggs typically hatch within 24–48 hours, and fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before accepting finely crushed flake or baby brine shrimp. Specific data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry growth rate for this species are not documented.

In the aquarium

Astyanax microlepis is not a species found in the mainstream ornamental trade; it is confined to a restricted range in Colombia, is considered rare, and lacks the vivid coloration or distinctive features that drive hobby demand. No established husbandry literature exists for the species specifically.

On the basis of its ecology — a mid-water, omnivorous, floodplain characid — it would likely behave as a typical peaceful schooling tetra in captivity, compatible with similarly sized tankmates and accepting of standard tropical flake and live or frozen invertebrate foods. Water chemistry following its western Andean origins — moderate temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, circumneutral pH — would be appropriate. Given its rarity and conservation context, any captive specimens would most likely be encountered in specialist scientific collections rather than the ornamental trade.

Conservation

Astyanax microlepis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, published 2016 based on an assessment dated 09 October 2014 by Villa-Navarro and Sanchez-Duarte. The LC listing reflects the absence of evidence for rapid population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category, rather than an absence of threats: the species is described as rare within its range, and assessors note that no protected-area occurrences have been confirmed.

The primary pressures on the species are habitat loss and degradation in the Cauca and Magdalena valleys — one of Colombia's most intensively farmed regions, where sugar-cane monocultures and associated deforestation have replaced natural riparian and floodplain vegetation across large areas. Population trend is unknown. The species' restriction to Colombia, its rarity, and its dependence on slow-water, vegetated habitats that are disproportionately affected by agricultural runoff and riparian clearing place it in a precarious position despite its current LC status. It is not reported to occur in any protected areas, leaving its persistence dependent on the condition of unprotected agricultural and peri-urban watercourses.
