Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax microschemos was described by Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco and Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in a 2006 paper in Neotropical Ichthyology presenting two new species of Astyanax from eastern Brazil alongside a synopsis of the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex. The holotype (MCP 37569, 2 in SL) was collected from Córrego Palmital in the Rio Itapemirim drainage, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Astyanax microschemos Bertaco & Lucena, 2006.
The species is placed within the A. scabripinnis complex, a historically poorly defined assemblage of small, stream-dwelling Astyanax distributed across upland Atlantic Forest drainages in eastern and southern Brazil. Members of this complex have proven difficult to diagnose morphologically, and the group has been the subject of repeated revisionary work. A. microschemos is distinguished from other members of the complex primarily by its unusually shallow body depth.
Morphology
Astyanax microschemos is a small, slender fish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Its most diagnostic character is the notably shallow body depth, which the original description quantifies at 26.9–29.7% of standard length — shallower than sympatric and otherwise similar members of the A. scabripinnis complex. This compressed, torpedo-like profile is presumably an adaptation to life in fast, shallow, rocky streams, where a lower body profile reduces drag.
Apart from its depth, the species shares the general Astyanax plan: a single short dorsal fin, a forked caudal, a moderately large eye, and the minutely toothed premaxilla that characterises the genus. Like most small characids, it is silvery with a faint lateral stripe and typical thin-bodied Atlantic Forest stream colouration; specific meristic data are given in the original description but detailed colour notes from living material are sparse in the published literature.
Habitat
The type locality of A. microschemos is Córrego Palmital, a headwater stream in the Rio Itapemirim drainage of Espírito Santo, south-eastern Brazil. Subsequent surveys have extended the known range to the upper Rio Itapemirim and to Rio Novo, a tributary of the upper Rio Doce near Caparaó National Park. All known localities share the character of small, clear, fast-flowing headwater streams — the Córrego Palmital itself is described as approximately 7 ft wide with clear water, rapids, riparian vegetation, and rocky substrate.
Associated fish recorded at the type locality include Characidium sp., Neoplecostomus sp., and Trichomycterus sp. — a community typical of clear, cool, upland Atlantic Forest streams. This microhabitat places A. microschemos firmly in the benthopelagic zone of shallow, oxygen-rich lotic waters, consistent with the broader ecology of the A. scabripinnis complex.
Feeding
No specific gut-content or dietary study appears in the published record for A. microschemos. Based on the ecology of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex and closely related small Astyanax occupying comparable Atlantic Forest headwater streams, the species is likely a generalised omnivore, consuming small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and small terrestrial insects falling into the stream — as well as algae, detritus, and plant material available in rocky headwater habitat.
Stream-associated Astyanax typically feed opportunistically in the drift and along the substrate; the shallow, fast-running type locality would concentrate food items in predictable current lanes. No aquarium dietary data are recorded in the available sources.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour of A. microschemos has not been documented in the primary literature. Members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex are generally assumed to follow the typical Astyanax pattern of open egg-scattering over substrate or among vegetation, without parental care — a strategy widespread across small characids occupying upland Neotropical streams.
The IUCN assessment notes that breeding biology is among the aspects requiring research for this species. Seasonal breeding tied to Espírito Santo's rainfall patterns is plausible, but no spawning-season data are available.
Breeding
No captive breeding records or detailed in-situ breeding observations have been published for A. microschemos. By analogy with the broader A. scabripinnis complex and with small Astyanax generally, eggs are presumed to be adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or deposited over clean rocky substrate, with no parental care from either sex.
The species has not entered the ornamental fish trade in any meaningful way, so there is no hobbyist breeding literature to draw on. Given its small size, clear-water origin, and headwater habitat, it would likely require cool, well-oxygenated, clean water in captivity and may be sensitive to degraded conditions.
In the aquarium
Astyanax microschemos is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is absent from hobby literature. It is a wild-caught research specimen rather than an aquarium fish. Should it ever become available, its natural habitat — clear, cool, fast, shallow rocky streams — would point toward a well-filtered, high-flow setup with clean, moderately cool tropical water, minimal suspended matter, and a current that replicates headwater conditions.
Its small size (under 2.5 in SL) and apparent stream specialisation would make it suitable for a species tank or a community with other small, cool-water Atlantic Forest species. No care data, feeding preferences in captivity, or compatibility notes exist in the available literature.
Conservation
Astyanax microschemos is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment carried out by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) with an assessment date of 7 November 2018, published in 2022. The LC listing reflects the finding that, while the species has a restricted distribution in the headwaters of Espírito Santo drainages, the known threats — mineral extraction and agriculture in the Rio Novo basin — do not appear to be compromising population viability at current levels.
The IUCN assessment flags the need for additional research into the species' full distribution limits, population trends, ecology, and breeding biology; the population trend is recorded as unknown. A. microschemos occurs in the vicinity of Caparaó National Park (where the upper Rio Doce headwaters originate), which may afford some incidental protection to part of its range, though no formal conservation programmes or protected-area status specifically covers this species.
