Astyanax minor is a small characid endemic to the upper Iguaçu River basin in Paraná state, Brazil — a river system whose isolated drainage has shaped a distinctive and largely endemic freshwater fish community. Described in 2010 as one of five new Astyanax species from the Iguaçu, it is a benthopelagic inhabitant of subtropical Neotropical streams, assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, and rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby. Its current valid placement under the genus Psalidodon, as recognised by some authorities, reflects the ongoing taxonomic restructuring of the enormous Astyanax species complex.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax minor was described by Julio C. Garavello and Fábio Sampaio in 2010, as part of a revision recognising five new Astyanax species from the Rio Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil. The paper was published in the Brazilian Journal of Biology (volume 70, number 3). The valid name as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax minor Garavello & Sampaio, 2010, though FishBase and some recent checklists treat the current valid name as Psalidodon minor, reflecting the movement of a large portion of southern South American Astyanax into the resurrected genus Psalidodon Eigenmann, 1914.

Astyanax sensu lato is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over 100 described species spread across South and Central America. The Iguaçu basin in southern Brazil has long been recognised as a centre of ichthyological endemism owing to its geomorphological isolation from the broader Paraná drainage, and this has generated a number of species — including A. minor — that are confined to that river system.

Morphology

Astyanax minor reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in, measured from unsexed or male specimens. It is a small to moderately sized characid with the typical Astyanax body plan: laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied, with a forked tail and a short adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. Dorsal soft rays number 8 to 10; anal soft rays 16 to 23, the higher anal ray count relative to some congeners being a diagnostic feature used in the original description.

Like most members of the Astyanax complex, it is silvery in overall coloration, likely with a lateral stripe or humeral spot, though detailed color notes from the original description are not captured in available secondary sources. Data on precise color patterns, squamation, and scale counts beyond the ray meristics above are sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

Astyanax minor is endemic to the upper Iguaçu River basin, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The Iguaçu is a large tributary of the upper Paraná system, but its fish fauna has differentiated substantially owing to a long history of isolation enforced by the Iguaçu Falls — one of the world's great waterfalls — which forms a historic barrier to fish dispersal between the upper and lower sections of the river. The species occupies freshwater, benthopelagic microhabitats within this basin.

A survey of the lower Iguaçu ichthyofauna (ZooKeys 1041, Pensoft) recorded the species from tributaries of the upper basin during sampling conducted 2010–2016, consistent with its described range. Specific microhabitat data — substrate preferences, riparian cover, current velocity — are not available in accessible secondary sources, but the subtropical climate of Paraná implies cooler water temperatures than those typical of tropical Amazonian characids.

Feeding

Mating

No species-specific observations on the mating behaviour of Astyanax minor have been published in accessible literature. By analogy with closely related and better-studied Astyanax species, courtship is likely brief and non-elaborate, consistent with the open-water egg-scattering reproductive mode typical of the genus. Males likely pursue females with no extended territory-holding or parental investment.

As with other characids in this guild, spawning probably occurs in open water or over submerged vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or deposited over the substrate. Seasonal cues — photoperiod, temperature shifts, or the onset of the rainy season — likely trigger spawning activity in the wild.

Breeding

Astyanax minor has not been established or bred in the aquarium hobby in any documented sense, and no captive breeding accounts appear in available literature. Based on the broader biology of Astyanax and closely related small characids, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, and no parental care following spawning.

Incubation period, clutch size, and fry rearing requirements remain undocumented for this species. Hobbyists interested in breeding closely related Iguaçu endemics should consult literature on other Astyanax species from southern Brazil, where some breeding accounts exist for captive populations of congeners.

In the aquarium

Astyanax minor is not an established aquarium species and is essentially unknown in the hobby. It is not bred commercially, does not appear in ornamental fish trade channels, and is absent from standard hobbyist references. Any specimens that reached the hobby would have arrived as incidental catch alongside other Iguaçu basin exports, rather than through targeted collection.

For aquarists seeking small Brazilian characids with a similar ecological profile, the broader Astyanax complex includes species that are occasionally available — though most Iguaçu endemics are collected only for scientific purposes. Water parameters appropriate for the Iguaçu subtropics (cooler than tropical Amazonian species, moderate hardness) would be a reasonable starting point for any husbandry attempt, but specific recommendations for A. minor cannot be responsibly made from available data.

Conservation

Astyanax minor is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The LC status reflects the species' apparently stable population within the upper Iguaçu basin and the absence of identified major threats sufficient to trigger a higher threat category at the time of assessment.

Nonetheless, the Iguaçu basin is a heavily modified river system: it hosts numerous large hydroelectric dams — including the Itaipu binacional on the lower Paraná — and its tributaries are affected by agriculture-driven sedimentation and riparian deforestation. As an endemic confined to a single river basin, A. minor is more vulnerable to habitat-level change than wide-ranging species, and future assessments may need to revisit its status if pressures on Iguaçu basin ichthyofauna intensify.
