Astyanax nasutus is a freshwater characid endemic to the Lake Managua basin of Nicaragua, one of Central America's great lake systems. Described by Seth Eugene Meek in 1907 from material collected during his surveys of the Nicaraguan great lakes, this benthopelagic tetra feeds primarily on diatoms, seeds, and plant material in the warm littoral waters of the basin. Assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, it remains poorly studied relative to the better-known cichlids sharing its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax nasutus was described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1907, in his synopsis of the fishes of the great lakes of Nicaragua, published in the Field Columbian Museum Zoölogical Series (v. 7, no. 4: 97–132). The type locality is the Lake Managua basin of Nicaragua. The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax nasutus Meek, 1907.

Astyanax is one of the most species-rich and taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, with representatives distributed broadly across North and Central America and South America. The genus has a long history of contested species boundaries, and many populations originally described as separate species have been synonymised over time or, conversely, shown to represent overlooked distinct lineages. The specific epithet nasutus derives from the Latin nasus (nose), meaning large-nosed or with a prominent snout — a reference to the facial profile that distinguishes this species within its genus.

Morphology

Astyanax nasutus is a moderately sized characid reaching a maximum total length of around 4 in, typical for the mid-sized members of its genus. Like other Astyanax it has the compressed, silvery body plan of a generalist characid: a roughly fusiform profile, a small adipose fin behind the rayed dorsal, and the distinct lateral line characteristic of the family.

The specific epithet suggests a relatively prominent snout compared with congeners, though detailed morphometric comparisons are not well represented in the accessible literature. Colouration in life is presumably silvery with the faint lateral stripe or body sheen common to the genus; the species has not been the subject of detailed colour documentation in the scientific literature available in this region, and descriptions based on preserved material may underrepresent the living fish's appearance.

Habitat

This species is native to the Lake Managua basin in Nicaragua, part of the greater Nicaraguan lake system of Central America. Lake Managua (Xolotlán) is a large, shallow lake connected to Lake Nicaragua (Cocibolca) via the Tipitapa River; the basin sits at low elevation in a warm tropical climate and has historically supported a diverse fish fauna including several endemic and near-endemic species.

Water temperatures in the Lake Managua basin are warm year-round, with conditions reported at 75–82 °F, consistent with the tropical lowland setting. Like other members of its genus, it likely frequents littoral and sublittoral zones where vegetation and food resources are concentrated.

Feeding

Astyanax nasutus is described as primarily herbivorous, with its diet documented to include diatoms, seeds, and plant material. This aligns with a broader pattern seen in several Astyanax species across the genus's range, where plant-based and detritivorous feeding strategies supplement or dominate over purely invertebrate-based diets — a flexibility that suits generalist omnivores in productive lake systems.

Mating

No dedicated field studies of mating behaviour in Astyanax nasutus are available in the published literature. Based on the reproductive biology of Astyanax species more broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care, broadcasting adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate during spawning runs. Seasonal cues in the Lake Managua basin — rainfall patterns, water level fluctuations, and temperature shifts — likely drive reproductive timing, as they do for many tropical freshwater characids.

Male Astyanax in spawning condition typically pursue females in active chasing behaviour near vegetation or in open water, with egg-sperm release occurring in brief bursts. The absence of dedicated spawning site defence or brood care is the rule across the genus.

Breeding

Astyanax nasutus has not been selectively bred in the aquarium hobby to the degree that more popular characids have, and no specific captive breeding accounts for this species appear in the accessible hobbyist literature. Members of the Astyanax genus generally prove amenable to aquarium breeding when conditioned on varied live and frozen foods, with spawning triggered by a water temperature drop or partial water change mimicking the onset of the wet season.

As with other egg-scattering characids, eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, after which the adults should be removed to prevent predation on the clutch. Eggs typically hatch within a day or two at tropical temperatures, and the small fry require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The brevity of parental investment — none beyond the act of spawning — is the genus norm.

In the aquarium

Astyanax nasutus is not commonly traded in the international ornamental fish hobby, and most aquarists will encounter other, more widely available Astyanax species before coming across this Nicaraguan endemic. Were it available, its care requirements would be consistent with the genus: a peaceful to semi-aggressive schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more, with adequate open swimming space, neutral to slightly alkaline water chemistry reflecting the lake system's moderately hard conditions, and temperatures in the 75–82 °F range.

The herbivorous tendency documented for this species suggests that a diet heavy in plant-based foods — supplemented with occasional frozen or live invertebrates — would suit it better than a purely carnivorous feeding regime. As a benthopelagic fish, it would likely use the mid and lower water column more than the surface layers, and would benefit from a tank with planted margins and some open substrate. Its naturally warm, well-oxygenated lake habitat argues for good filtration and moderate water movement.

Conservation

Astyanax nasutus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded via FishBase as dated 3 February 2020. Data Deficient does not mean the species is not at risk; it means that insufficient information exists to determine its conservation status reliably. Given the species' restricted range within the Lake Managua basin — a water body that has suffered from significant water quality degradation, including heavy pollution from Managua's urban and industrial runoff — the absence of data is itself a conservation concern.

Lake Managua has been documented as one of the more polluted large lakes in Central America, with historical inputs of heavy metals, sewage, and agricultural runoff altering the ecosystem considerably. Endemic and near-endemic fish species in such a modified system face pressures that may not be captured in assessments lacking population trend data. The designation of Data Deficient for this species underscores the need for targeted surveys of the Nicaraguan endemic fish fauna.
