Astyanax nicaraguensis is a small, silvery characid native to the freshwaters of Nicaragua, belonging to one of the most species-rich genera in the Americas. Though rarely profiled in the hobby, it represents the Central American flank of the genus Astyanax — a group whose members range from cave-adapted, eyeless forms to schooling tetras inhabiting large lowland rivers — and its occurrence in Nicaragua places it among the northernmost representatives of the South American characid radiation.

The species belongs to the genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, which is one of the most diverse vertebrate genera in the Western Hemisphere and sits within the family Characidae.

The genus Astyanax is famously heterogeneous and has been subject to ongoing taxonomic revision. Several lineages once placed here have been moved to other genera, while the core group — including Central American species such as A. nicaraguensis — has been retained. The species name nicaraguensis is a Latinised toponym referring to Nicaragua, the country from which the type material originated.

Morphology

Astyanax nicaraguensis is a small characid reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 3.5 in, based on FishBase records for male and unsexed specimens. The body plan follows the typical Astyanax profile: laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with a relatively blunt snout, large eyes, and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characidae between the dorsal and caudal fins.

Coloration in life is likely silvery with a faint lateral stripe and a dark spot or smudge at the caudal peduncle, consistent with other small Central American Astyanax species, though detailed colour descriptions from wild-caught specimens are sparse in the available literature. The caudal fin typically shows a dark stripe through the medial rays. As with most small Astyanax, the teeth are multicuspid, adapted for a generalist omnivorous diet.

Habitat

This species is endemic to Nicaragua, where it inhabits freshwater rivers and streams. Breeding

Astyanax nicaraguensis is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, a reproductive mode universal in the genus. Spawning involves the scatter of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate. Adults offer no care and will consume eggs given the opportunity, so breeders working with related species routinely remove adults immediately after spawning or use mesh to protect eggs.

Egg incubation in small tropical characids typically completes within 24–48 hours at temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. A group of six or more individuals is appropriate for a species that in the wild schools with conspecifics. Tank length of 31.5–39.5 in or more would suit a small group, with open swimming space and planted margins. Tankmates of similar size and temperament — other small characids, peaceful cyprinids, and calm catfishes — are appropriate. The species is not known to be aggressive, and small Astyanax generally coexist well in community settings. Its relative obscurity in the trade means that sourcing may require specialist suppliers.

Conservation

Astyanax nicaraguensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2020-02-06 according to FishBase. The Least Concern designation indicates that the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a threatened category, implying a reasonably stable population or wide enough distribution within Nicaragua that localised pressures do not threaten the species overall.

Nevertheless, the freshwaters of Nicaragua face ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water abstraction that affect many endemic freshwater species. Astyanax as a genus contains both highly resilient and highly localised species; the conservation status of A. nicaraguensis should be revisited as more survey data become available from Nicaraguan river systems.
