Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax orbignyanus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1850, in the multivolume natural history series Histoire Naturelle des Poissons co-authored with Georges Cuvier. The type locality is La Plata and other Argentine localities within the lower La Plata basin. The authorship is given in parentheses — (Valenciennes, 1850) — because the species was not described in the genus Astyanax as currently defined, and has been transferred to that genus by subsequent workers.
The species' standing was placed in doubt by Lucena and Soares in their 2016 revision of the Astyanax bimaculatus caudal-peduncle-spot group, published in Zootaxa (vol. 4072, no. 1). In that work, A. orbignyanus was listed as a species inquirendae — a formal taxonomic term meaning the name's correct application is uncertain and requires further material or examination to resolve. The species is therefore flagged as doubtful in modern usage rather than accepted without reservation. It belongs to a subgroup of Astyanax characterised by a spot at the base of the caudal peduncle, a common feature across many members of this large and notoriously difficult genus.
Astyanax itself is one of the most species-rich genera in Characidae, with members spread across North, Central, and South America. The bimaculatus complex alone contains many described forms, and synonymies are frequent. The genus name derives from Greek mythology; the species epithet orbignyanus honours the French naturalist Alcide d'Orbigny, who collected widely in South America in the early nineteenth century.
