Astyanax orthodus is a small, streamlined characid of the Atrato River Basin in Colombia — one of nine species that make up the A. orthodus species-group, as revised in 2018 and characterised by a distinctive row of chevron-shaped marks running along the lateral midline from the humeral region to the caudal peduncle. First described from the Truando River, a tributary of the Atrato in Chocó department, it inhabits lowland streams and ponds from near sea level to about 197 ft elevation and feeds primarily on seeds and insects. It is broadly similar to other mid-sized Astyanax but the diagonal chevron marks set it apart within the group.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax orthodus was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, with the type locality recorded as Truando — a small river draining into the Atrato system in the Chocó region of Colombia. The authority is sometimes cited as Eigenmann & Ogle (1907) in the primary literature, reflecting collaborative work during Eigenmann's surveys of Colombian freshwater fishes.

In 2018 Ruiz-C and colleagues published a comprehensive revision of the A. orthodus species-group in the European Journal of Taxonomy, recognising nine species within it and providing detailed diagnostic characters for each. The defining feature of the group is a chevron-shaped series of dark marks aligned along the lateral midline from the humeral region to the caudal peduncle — a pattern distinguishable from the solid lateral stripe or absent marking seen in other Astyanax clades. Astyanax is placed in the family Characidae and is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics, with more than 150 valid species; the orthodus group represents a morphologically coherent subset within this diversity.

Morphology

Astyanax orthodus is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) at maximum. Like most Astyanax it has the characteristic body plan of the family: a fusiform to slightly deep profile, a single dorsal fin, a forked caudal fin, and small to moderate scales along the lateral line.

The most useful diagnostic feature is the series of chevron-shaped lateral marks running from just behind the humeral blotch to the base of the caudal peduncle. These angled, roughly V-shaped dark marks distinguish members of the orthodus group from closely related species with a continuous solid stripe or no lateral pigmentation. Coloration is otherwise typical for mid-sized Astyanax: a silvery body with a diffuse humeral spot and a dark caudal spot at the base of the tail, flanks with a faint lateral sheen. Sexual dimorphism is not dramatically expressed, though females may appear deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Atrato River Basin in northwestern Colombia, an extremely biodiverse lowland drainage that empties into the Caribbean via the Gulf of Urabá. The type locality lies within the Truando sub-basin in the Chocó department, one of the most species-rich and least-disturbed freshwater systems in South America.

Within this drainage A. orthodus occupies streams and ponds from near sea level to around 197 ft elevation. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic in freshwater, meaning it moves through the water column rather than being strictly bottom-dwelling. Current tolerance is broad — ranging from stagnant ponds to swiftly flowing stream reaches — and water temperatures span roughly 75–82 °F, reflecting the warm, lowland tropical conditions of the Colombian Pacific lowlands.

Feeding

Field data summarised on FishBase indicate that A. orthodus feeds primarily on seeds and on terrestrial and aquatic insects. This places it within the omnivore–frugivore spectrum common in lowland Neotropical characids, which frequently exploit allochthonous food sources falling from riparian vegetation as well as invertebrates from the benthos and water column.

The prominence of seeds in the diet suggests it forages at or near the surface and along stream margins where fruits and plant material accumulate. In an aquarium context, food preferences typical for Astyanax can be expected: the fish will accept good-quality flake and small pellets, as well as live or frozen invertebrate foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Offering a varied diet that includes some plant-derived or colour-enhancing foods is advisable for long-term condition.

Mating

No published accounts specifically describe the mating behaviour of A. orthodus in the wild or in captivity. Based on the broader biology of the genus Astyanax, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care — the reproductive strategy typical throughout the family Characidae.

In small Astyanax species generally, males pursue gravid females during spawning events and fertilise adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs as they are broadcast among fine-leaved vegetation or drifted in the current. Males of many Astyanax show no territorial defence and compete simply through access and proximity. Seasonal cues such as changes in rainfall, temperature, and photoperiod likely trigger spawning in the Chocó, where the Atrato Basin experiences a pronounced rainy season.

Breeding

Specific captive breeding records for A. orthodus are not available in the published literature consulted. By analogy with the many Astyanax that have been bred in aquaria — a genus with several easily bred species — the following general approach is expected to apply: a conditioning group of adults is fed well on varied foods and then moved to a spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops; spawning occurs in the morning, with the pair or group broadcasting eggs among the substrate.

Eggs are adhesive and should be removed from the adults promptly as Astyanax routinely cannibalise their own eggs and offer no parental care. At tropical temperatures hatching typically occurs within 24–48 hours. Fry are free-swimming after a further two to three days and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Hobbyists interested in keeping this species may need to obtain wild or commercially collected stock, as the species is not a standard item in the ornamental trade.

In the aquarium

Astyanax orthodus is not a commonly traded aquarium fish, and detailed husbandry accounts are sparse in the hobby literature. Based on the species' origin in warm, lowland tropical streams and ponds of the Colombian Chocó, water temperatures of 75–82 °F and a broadly neutral to slightly acidic to neutral pH should suit it, in keeping with soft Atrato Basin water chemistry.

Like most Astyanax it is expected to be an active, schooling characid that does best in a group of six or more. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and some surface movement, replicating the stream margins and vegetated ponds it occupies naturally, would be appropriate. Given its maximum size of nearly 4.5 in SL, a tank of at least 39.5 in in length is advisable for a proper adult school. Tankmates should be similarly sized and of peaceful temperament; very small fish risk predation from an Astyanax of this size. Diet in captivity can follow the same varied omnivore regimen used for other mid-sized tetras.

Conservation

Astyanax orthodus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by FishBase, which is consistent with its occurrence across the broader Atrato River Basin — one of the larger Pacific-slope drainages in South America and a system that retains extensive forest cover in its upper reaches. No species-specific IUCN Red List assessment page was located during research for this article; the LC indication derives from FishBase rather than a formal IUCN assessment.

The Atrato Basin faces ongoing pressures including gold mining, agricultural expansion, deforestation, and displacement of local communities, all of which degrade water quality and alter riparian habitat. The 2018 revision by Ruiz-C and colleagues that clarified the orthodus species-group underscores how poorly known many Astyanax remain at the species level — accurate conservation assessments require stable taxonomy, which the revision helps provide. No specific conservation measures targeting A. orthodus are recorded in the literature.
