Astyanax pardensis is a small characin from the Das Contas and Pardo river basins of Bahia, eastern Brazil, described by Salgado in 2021. It belongs to the wide-ranging Astyanax fasciatus species complex — a group notoriously difficult to disentangle — and was recognised as a distinct species on the strength of a lower precaudal vertebral count and a distinctive zig-zag longitudinal band that crosses three scale rows along the flanks. Not yet evaluated by the IUCN, it is one of the newer additions to one of the most speciose tetra genera in South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax pardensis was described by Salgado in 2021 in the International Journal of Zoology and Animal Biology, based on specimens from the Panelinha river — a tributary of the Panelão river — in the Pardo river drainage near Camacan, Bahia, Brazil (15°22′24″S 39°29′59″W). The holotype is MNRJ 22928. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the name as valid: Astyanax pardensis Salgado, 2021, with the authority unparenthesised because the species was described directly in Astyanax.

The species is placed within the Astyanax fasciatus species complex, a historically problematic assemblage of wide-ranging, phenotypically plastic characins that has been progressively resolved through meristic and osteological analyses. A. pardensis was separated from related taxa primarily by its precaudal vertebral count of 16, which is lower than the ≥17 found in the other species compared, and by the shape of the lateral band, which takes a zig-zag course across three rows of scales rather than forming a simpler, straight stripe. Its specific epithet, pardensis, refers to the Pardo river basin, one of the two drainages from which the species is known.

Astyanax is one of the largest genera of characins, with representatives spanning from the southern United States into Argentina. The family Characidae is the nominal family of the order Characiformes and has long served as a catch-all for small to medium-sized South and Central American tetras with a forked tail and an adipose fin.

Morphology

Astyanax pardensis is a small, slender-bodied characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in (holotype MNRJ 22928; FishBase also reports 2.5 in SL as the maximum). Like other members of the genus it carries the typical tetra body plan: a laterally compressed, fusiform shape, a forked caudal fin, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and a full complement of small cycloid scales.

The most distinctive external character is the lateral colour pattern: a dark longitudinal band that follows a zig-zag course, crossing three rows of scales along the mid-flank. A caudal peduncle spot is present. The overall ground colour is brown, and the band's zig-zag geometry, combined with the low precaudal vertebral count (16), formed the primary basis of its formal diagnosis. Habitat

The species is known from the Das Contas and Pardo river basins in the state of Bahia, eastern Brazil — specifically from the Panelinha river (Pardo basin) at the type locality near Camacan, at approximately 15°22′S 39°29′W. Both the Pardo and Das Contas rivers drain the eastern escarpment of the Bahian uplands into the Atlantic coast zone of Brazil, a region characterised by seasonally variable rainfall and a mosaic of Atlantic Forest remnants.

FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, pelagic-neritic fish in tropical conditions, consistent with what is known of Astyanax habitat use across the genus: shallow to moderately deep, clear to turbid freshwater streams and rivers, often associated with bank vegetation or submerged structure. More detailed in-situ water-chemistry data for the type-locality streams were not captured in available sources.

Feeding

The original description characterises Astyanax pardensis as omnivorous, with a diet including small arthropods, algae, and plant matter — the generalist feeding strategy typical of the Astyanax fasciatus complex and of Astyanax broadly. Members of this complex are opportunistic foragers that exploit whatever is seasonally abundant: terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, aquatic invertebrates, detritus, and plant material.

In the aquarium, Astyanax species in this size range accept most standard small-tetra foods readily: quality flake and micro-pellet, frozen or live Artemia, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae, and vegetable supplement. A varied diet maintains condition and colour; omnivores in this genus often show improved vitality on a rotation of foods rather than a single staple.

Mating

No specific reproductive observations for Astyanax pardensis have been published in available literature. Based on what is known of the wider Astyanax fasciatus complex — and of Astyanax generally — the species almost certainly follows the typical characin pattern: open water egg-scattering with no parental investment and no pair bond beyond the spawning event itself. Males may display laterally toward females, spreading fins to accentuate colour.

Spawning in the wild is likely to be linked to rainfall seasonality and consequent changes in water level, temperature, and food availability, as is typical for characins in seasonally variable Atlantic Forest drainages. Eggs are probably scattered freely or deposited loosely among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or fibrous root masses, with no guarding behaviour.

Breeding

The original description notes that Astyanax pardensis breeds in the typical characin open-spawning mode with no parental care. In the aquarium, members of the Astyanax fasciatus complex are generally straightforward egg-scatterers: a conditioned pair or group releases adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, the adults ignore or consume the spawn, and eggs hatch within 24–48 hours depending on temperature. Fry are initially very small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

No specific hobbyist breeding accounts for A. pardensis were found in sources consulted. As a recently described species from a restricted drainage basin in Bahia, it is not known to be established in the ornamental trade, and captive-breeding protocols remain undocumented. In the aquarium

Astyanax pardensis is not, at present, an established aquarium species. As a newly described (2021) tetra from a relatively obscure Atlantic coast drainage in Bahia, it is unlikely to appear in the ornamental trade in the near term. In this sense it currently sits in the category of ichthyologically documented but hobbyistically unavailable species.

Should it become available, it would be expected to behave like other small Astyanax in the 2–3 in range: an active, hardy, shoaling species suited to a community aquarium with other similarly sized, peaceful fish. A group of six or more individuals, a tank with some planted cover, and the standard conditions for a lowland Brazilian tetra — water temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius and a modest, near-neutral pH — would be a reasonable starting point. Its omnivorous diet makes feeding uncomplicated.

Conservation

Astyanax pardensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). The species was formally described only in 2021, and assessment backlogs mean newly described species often remain unevaluated for some years after publication.

The known range is restricted to the Das Contas and Pardo river basins in Bahia, Brazil — both drainages within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot, a region under sustained pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and water extraction. The Atlantic Forest biome retains only a small fraction of its original extent, and its freshwater fauna includes a high proportion of narrow-range endemics. Whether A. pardensis's restricted known distribution reflects a genuinely small range or simply incomplete collecting effort in a taxonomically complex group is not yet clear.
