Astyanax petenensis is a silvery, schooling characid endemic to Lake Petén Itzá and its associated drainage in northern Guatemala — one of the largest and most biodiverse karst lakes in Central America. Described by Albert Günther in 1864 from material collected at the lake, it represents the southernmost reach of a widely distributed Central American Astyanax lineage and is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, threatened by pollution, deforestation, sedimentation, and rapid urbanisation around Petén Itzá's shores.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax petenensis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864, with the type locality given as Lake Petén, Guatemala — the large karst lake now universally known as Lake Petén Itzá. The authority is rendered in parentheses because Günther placed the species in a different genus from which it was later transferred to Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) records Astyanax petenensis as the valid name under the family Characidae.

The genus Astyanax is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Americas, ranging from the southern United States south through Mexico and Central America into South America. Phylogenetic work on the evolutionary history of Astyanax populations across the Yucatán Peninsula and Guatemala has placed A. petenensis within a Central American radiation that diversified across karst and highland drainage systems of the region, with the Petén Itzá basin fish representing a distinct, lake-resident population separate from river-dwelling conspecifics or close relatives elsewhere in the Maya Lowlands.

Morphology

Astyanax petenensis is a slender, laterally compressed characid reaching approximately 4.5 in standard length, the maximum size recorded by FishBase. The body form is typical of the genus: a moderately fusiform profile with a blunt snout, large eyes, and a forked tail. The flanks are silvery, often with a diffuse horizontal stripe or a dark caudal spot near the base of the tail, coloration that blends with open, clear water in its lacustrine habitat.

As a benthopelagic species it occupies the water column from mid-water toward the bottom, and the body plan reflects this generalist ecology — neither strongly dorsoventrally flattened like a benthic specialist nor extremely streamlined like an open-water pelagic. Astyanax petenensis belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within Characidae in some classifications, though family-level and subfamily-level arrangements in the Characiformes remain subject to ongoing revision.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Petén Itzá and its associated rivers and streams in the El Petén department of northern Guatemala. Lake Petén Itzá is a large, deep karst lake on the Yucatán platform, remarkable for its clarity and biological diversity; it sits at roughly 361 ft above sea level and is one of Guatemala's most significant freshwater bodies. The lake system sits within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, and part of the species' range falls within the reserve's buffer zone.

Astyanax petenensis inhabits the lake itself as well as connected rivers, streams, and seasonally flooded areas. Like most Astyanax it is a schooling species, forming loose aggregations in clear water among littoral vegetation and open lacustrine environments. The Petén region experiences a tropical seasonal climate with a pronounced dry and wet season; the lake's water chemistry reflects its limestone geology, tending toward alkaline conditions.

Feeding

Astyanax petenensis is an opportunistic omnivore in the manner characteristic of the genus. Wild fish take invertebrates, small insects and their larvae, plant material, algae, and organic detritus, exploiting available food sources across the water column. The species' benthopelagic habit allows it to forage both near the substrate and in open water, opportunistically switching between prey types depending on availability and season.

In captivity it accepts a wide variety of foods readily: quality dried flakes and small pellets, live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and occasional vegetable matter. It is not a fussy feeder; varied nutrition supports better condition and livelier schooling behaviour.

Mating

Astyanax petenensis is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, the typical reproductive strategy of the genus. Males and females form loose courting aggregations, with males pursuing females and stimulating egg-release through active chasing. Spawning is non-selective regarding substrate in many Astyanax — eggs may be scattered over fine-leaved aquatic plants, among submerged vegetation, or into open water — and adhesive eggs settle among vegetation or soft detritus.

Clear-water, well-oxygenated conditions typical of Lake Petén Itzá likely support year-round or seasonally extended spawning linked to the lake's warm, stable temperatures. No specialist courtship structure or territory defence has been documented for this species; it exhibits the broadcast-spawning system found across Astyanax.

Breeding

Like the majority of Astyanax, A. petenensis breeds by egg-scattering with no parental investment; adults will consume eggs if given the opportunity. In captivity, conditioning groups of adults with high-protein live and frozen foods triggers spawning readily. Pairs or small groups can be moved to a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, which collect the adhesive eggs.

Eggs hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures. The tiny fry are initially reliant on their yolk sacs and begin free-swimming shortly after hatching; first foods should be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. Growth is reasonably fast under good feeding conditions, and juveniles begin to take on the typical silver-flanked Astyanax body form within a few weeks.

In the aquarium

Astyanax petenensis is infrequently encountered in the hobby relative to the widely traded blind cave form of Astyanax mexicanus, but it is well suited to community aquaria. It is a peaceful, active schooling species best kept in groups of six or more, where it displays natural shoaling behaviour and is less prone to fin-nipping than isolated individuals. An aquarium of 35.5 in or more in length provides adequate swimming space for an adult group.

Water conditions should reflect the alkaline, warm karst lake chemistry of its native habitat: temperatures of 75–82 °F, neutral to moderately alkaline pH, and moderate hardness suit the species well. Good filtration and regular water changes keep it in good health. It is compatible with similarly sized peaceful fish and adapts readily to a planted aquarium with open central swimming space. As a benthopelagic species it appreciates both mid-water open areas and some cover near the bottom. Diet is easily met with quality prepared foods supplemented by live or frozen invertebrates.

Conservation

Astyanax petenensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), an assessment conducted on 10 September 2018 by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto. The B-criterion listing reflects the species' restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy combined with documented, ongoing declines in the quality of its habitat. Threats identified in the assessment include water pollution, deforestation in the surrounding catchment leading to sedimentation and nutrient loading, and rapidly expanding urbanisation around the shores of Lake Petén Itzá — all pressures that have intensified with the growth of the tourism industry and population of El Petén department.

Part of the species' range falls within the Maya Biosphere Reserve Buffer Zone, providing partial habitat protection, though enforcement and buffer effectiveness are limited. Being endemic to a single lake basin, A. petenensis has no large, resilient outlying population to buffer local declines. Maintaining water quality in Lake Petén Itzá and managing watershed deforestation are the key conservation needs. The species is not prominent in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a significant threat, but the narrow endemic range means local deterioration of the lake system could affect the entire global population.
