Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax pirabitira was described in 2013 by Carlos A. S. de Lucena, Vinicius A. Bertaco, and André Berbigier in the journal Zootaxa (volume 3700, issue 2). Type material was collected from the upper rio das Antas drainage, part of the laguna dos Patos system, and from the upper rio Pelotas within the rio Uruguay drainage, both in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid name as Astyanax pirabitira Lucena, Bertaco & Berbigier, 2013.
The species belongs to the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex, a broadly distributed group of small, montane, stream-dwelling tetras scattered across highland drainages of south-eastern and southern Brazil and adjacent countries. The complex has long been taxonomically difficult, with species diagnoses resting on combinations of meristic counts, body proportions, and spot patterns rather than any single definitive character. A. pirabitira is distinguished within the complex by a combination of humeral markings (one or two humeral spots), the absence of bony hooks on the anal fin, and meristic ranges including lateral-line scale counts of 37–40 and anal-fin branched rays of 15–20.
Astyanax itself is one of the most species-rich characid genera in the Neotropics, and its limits have been subject to repeated revision. For the purposes of the Catalog of Fishes and this account, A. pirabitira is retained in Astyanax sensu lato.
Morphology
Astyanax pirabitira is a small, moderately deep-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, though most individuals in collections are smaller. Body depth falls between 27.1 and 34.0% of standard length, giving the fish the somewhat compressed, oval profile typical of the scabripinnis complex. The head is moderately sized; interorbital width is 22.2–28.7% of head length and head depth 72.9–97.0% of head length.
The dentition is simple: one or two maxillary teeth are present. The lateral line is complete and carries 37–40 scales. Dorsal-fin soft rays number 10–11; anal-fin branched rays 15–20; vertebral count 35–38. One or two dark humeral spots mark the shoulder region behind the opercle, a character shared across the scabripinnis complex. Bony hooks are absent from the anal fin, a feature used in the original diagnosis to separate A. pirabitira from certain other complex members in which males develop such hooks during maturation.
Overall colouration follows the generic pattern for Astyanax: silvery flanks with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral band, darker dorsally, paler below. Specific colour notes beyond the humeral spots are not detailed in the available literature for this species.
Habitat
Astyanax pirabitira is a highland species, known only from streams and rivers of the upper rio das Antas (laguna dos Patos system) and upper rio Pelotas (rio Uruguay drainage) in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. All known collection sites lie at altitudes of 800 to 1200 metres above sea level, placing the species firmly in the subtropical uplands of the Serra Gaúcha and adjacent ranges.

The subtropical climate of Rio Grande do Sul delivers cold winters, and populations at these elevations experience temperatures well below those of lowland tropical congeners.
The two drainages occupied by A. pirabitira belong to different hydrological systems — the laguna dos Patos coastal drainage to the east and the Río Uruguay basin to the west — suggesting the species is distributed across a watershed divide in the highlands, a pattern common among Astyanax scabripinnis complex members that colonised headwater streams before or during past drainage connections.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Astyanax pirabitira has been published in the available literature. Members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex are broadly omnivorous, feeding opportunistically on allochthonous invertebrates (insects falling to the water surface, terrestrial arthropods), aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, algae, and plant detritus — a diet shaped by the low productivity of clear, fast highland streams where food subsidies from riparian vegetation are often the primary energy source.
In the aquarium, related highland Astyanax readily accept prepared foods including quality flake and small pellets, supplemented with frozen or live offerings such as Daphnia, small bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Given the probable high-energy demands of life in cool, fast-flowing upland water, good feeding condition is important for keeping such species at their best in captivity.
Mating
No direct observations of mating behaviour in Astyanax pirabitira have been published. By analogy with other members of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex and with Astyanax generally, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner that does not form pair bonds and provides no parental care. Males of many Astyanax develop bony hooks on the anal and other fins that are thought to function in spawning behaviour; the original description notes the absence of such hooks in A. pirabitira, which may reflect a difference in the mechanics of spawning compared to hook-bearing congeners.
Courtship in highland Astyanax typically involves males pursuing females through the water column, with eggs scattered over fine substrate, gravel, or aquatic vegetation. Spawning likely tracks the seasonality of southern Brazilian highland streams, with warmer months — austral spring and summer — providing the temperature and food cues that bring fish into reproductive condition.
Breeding
Astyanax pirabitira has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the available literature. Based on the biology of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex more broadly, breeding would be expected to follow the standard characid egg-scattering pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants, gravel, or substrate, with no parental care and active predation of eggs by the adults if left together after spawning.
For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding, the highland origins of this species are an important guide. Conditioning at cooler subtropical temperatures rather than standard tropical settings, and providing well-oxygenated water with modest flow to simulate the species' natural lotic habitat, would be the logical starting point. Eggs should be removed or adults separated after spawning. Specific incubation times, clutch sizes, and fry-rearing requirements are not documented in the literature available for this species.
In the aquarium
Astyanax pirabitira is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby as of this writing; it is a recently described, geographically restricted montane species with a very limited footprint in the ornamental fish trade. Aquarists who do obtain it should bear in mind its highland origins: cool, well-oxygenated, clear water is the natural template, and keeping it at standard tropical temperatures is likely stressful over the long term. Temperatures in the range of 61–72 °F, corresponding to the subtropical uplands of Rio Grande do Sul, would be more appropriate than the 79–82 °F typically recommended for lowland Amazonian tetras.
As a schooling characid, it should be kept in groups of six or more to allow normal social behaviour and reduce individual stress. A longer tank with some water movement, subdued or dappled lighting, and a backdrop of fine plants or a dark substrate would approximate conditions in a shaded upland stream. Diet should be varied, following the omnivorous model of the genus. Because hobby information is sparse, aquarists keeping this species are encouraged to document their observations and share them with the broader community.
Conservation
Astyanax pirabitira was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN in November 2018. The LC status reflects a presumed absence of major threats severe enough to qualify it for a threatened category, rather than any positive evidence of abundance. The species has a restricted known range confined to highland headwaters in Rio Grande do Sul, and its montane lotic habitat is inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance — deforestation of riparian zones, agricultural runoff, water abstraction, and the effects of climate change on upland stream temperatures and hydrology all pose potential risks to headwater fish communities in southern Brazil.
The 2018 Brazilian Red Book (Livro Vermelho da Fauna Brasileira Ameaçada de Extinção) lists the species with a status of "Desconhecido" (unknown/insufficiently assessed at the national level as of the reference date), reflecting the limited distributional and population data available at the time. Given that the entire known range lies within a single state, any future survey work that refines the species' distribution, abundance, and sensitivity to catchment-scale changes would be valuable for ensuring the IUCN assessment remains current.
