Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax pirapuan was described by Tagliacollo, Britzke, Silva & Benine in 2011, in a paper published in Zootaxa (volume 2749, pages 40–46). The type locality is the upper Rio Paraguay system of Mato Grosso, central Brazil, a drainage that feeds the vast Pantanal wetland complex. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the name as valid; because the species was described directly in Astyanax, the authority is cited without parentheses.
The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the world, with well over 150 valid species distributed across North, Central, and South America. The group is notoriously difficult taxonomically, and species limits within it continue to be refined as molecular and morphological data accumulate. A. pirapuan sits within the diverse South American radiation of the genus and is distinguished from congeners by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters detailed in the original description.
No subspecies are recognised, and no synonyms are currently listed. The species has no widely used English common name.
Morphology
Astyanax pirapuan is a fusiform, laterally compressed characid with the body plan typical of the genus: a moderately deep body, a bluntly rounded snout, a terminal mouth bearing small bicuspid teeth, and a short adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 10 in, which places it among the larger members of Astyanax, though most individuals in natural populations are likely considerably smaller.
The coloration follows the conservative pattern common across the genus: a silvery to pale-yellowish body with a dark lateral stripe or band running from behind the operculum to the base of the caudal fin, often intensifying into a dark blotch at the caudal peduncle. A humeral spot may be present. Specific details of scale counts, fin-ray counts, and lateral-line pore counts are provided in the original Zootaxa description, which remains the primary morphological reference for the species. Data on coloration in life are sparse in the published literature.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Rio Aricá-Mirim and the broader Rio Cuiabá basin, both tributaries of the upper Rio Paraguay system in Mato Grosso, central Brazil. This region encompasses seasonally flooded savanna and gallery-forest streams that drain into the Pantanal, one of the world's largest tropical wetland systems. FishBase categorises A. pirapuan as a benthopelagic freshwater species, indicating use of the water column from near the bottom upward in riverine and stream environments.
Water conditions in the upper Paraguay tributaries span a broad range seasonally: temperatures in tropical Mato Grosso typically range from the low 20s to the upper 20s Celsius over the year, with pH and hardness varying between the clear, slightly acidic waters of cerrado headstreams and the more turbid, mineralised waters of lowland reaches. Specific water-chemistry data for A. pirapuan's microhabitat are not documented in the available literature.
Feeding
As with most members of the genus, Astyanax pirapuan is presumed to be an omnivore, exploiting a broad range of food items encountered in its riverine environment. Studies on other Astyanax species document diets that include terrestrial and aquatic insects, small crustaceans, plant material such as seeds and algae, and occasional small fish or invertebrate fragments. This generalism is characteristic of the group and likely reflects opportunistic foraging tied to seasonal flood pulses that dramatically alter food availability in the upper Paraguay system.
No dietary study specific to A. pirapuan has been published. Inferences about its feeding ecology are therefore drawn from the broader Astyanax literature and from the habitat context of the upper Rio Paraguay drainage, where food inputs shift considerably between the wet-season flood and the dry-season low-water period.
Mating
Astyanax pirapuan has not been studied in detail with respect to its reproductive behaviour, but the broader biology of the genus provides a reliable framework. Astyanax species are open-water egg-scatterers that do not form long-term pair bonds, show no parental care, and typically spawn in association with aquatic vegetation or flooded marginal habitat during the wet season. Males compete for access to ripe females, and spawning events are brief, with eggs scattered and fertilised in the water column or among fine-leaved plants.
In many South American characids, the onset of the rainy season acts as a spawning trigger, as rising water levels, decreasing temperature gradients, and the influx of food-rich flooded areas cue reproductive readiness. No courtship specialisations or secondary sexual characters unique to A. pirapuan are documented in the literature; sexual dimorphism, if present, is likely subtle and expressed primarily through female abdominal distension when gravid.
Breeding
No captive breeding records specific to Astyanax pirapuan are available in the published or hobbyist literature. Based on the well-documented biology of congeners kept in aquaria, breeding would be expected to follow the standard Astyanax pattern: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or open substrate, with small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that receive no parental care and hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures. Adults readily consume both eggs and fry if not separated.
In nature, spawning in the upper Rio Paraguay system is likely tied to the onset of the wet season (roughly October to March in Mato Grosso), when flooding provides the habitat cues and food resources that support larval development. The species has not been established in the ornamental trade, and captive breeding data are therefore absent.
In the aquarium
Astyanax pirapuan is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever encountered in the hobby. Its relatively large maximum size — up to 10 in SL — means that even if available it would require a spacious aquarium suited to a robust, active characid. Like other large Astyanax, it would be expected to be a strong swimmer that benefits from open water, good filtration, and a diverse omnivore diet including live or frozen invertebrates alongside prepared foods.
Given the lack of trade availability and the absence of husbandry records, specific care recommendations cannot be made with confidence. Aquarists interested in large South American characids are better served by the few well-documented congeners that have established captive populations. Should the species become available in future, water parameters broadly matching the upper Paraguay system — warm, slightly soft to moderately hard, near-neutral — would provide a reasonable starting point.
Conservation
Astyanax pirapuan is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating from 2018. The listing reflects the absence of documented major threats to the species and its apparently stable populations within the upper Rio Paraguay drainage. No population trend data are available, and the assessment notes no specific conservation concerns.
The upper Rio Paraguay and its Mato Grosso tributaries are, however, subject to ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, soy and cattle farming in the cerrado, and associated water-quality degradation and sedimentation in smaller tributary streams. These are regional rather than species-specific concerns, but any endemic or restricted-range species in the basin could be affected by cumulative habitat loss over the longer term. Continued monitoring of the Mato Grosso ichthyofauna and reassessment of data-sparse species as new surveys are conducted remain priorities for the region.
