Astyanax pirauba is a small characid from the clear-water tributaries of the Rio Xingu and Rio Tapajós drainages in Amazonian Brazil, where it forages in shadowed pools and runs between rapids beneath intact riparian forest. Originally described as a species of Moenkhausia and subsequently transferred to Astyanax, it is best known scientifically for a putative case of polymorphic Batesian mimicry — a fish whose name itself, derived from Tupi words meaning 'false fish', encodes that curiosity. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018, it remains a specialist of well-forested streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax pirauba was described by Zanata, Birindelli and Moreira in 2010, from specimens collected in the Rio Xingu and Rio Tapajós basins of Brazil. The original description placed the species in Moenkhausia, a large and historically catch-all genus within Characidae. The valid name is Astyanax pirauba (Zanata, Birindelli & Moreira, 2010), with the authority in parentheses reflecting the subsequent generic transfer; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for that placement.

The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera on Earth, encompassing several hundred described species distributed across Mexico, Central America, and South America. It belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within Characidae, and its limits continue to be refined by molecular and morphological work. A. pirauba falls within a cluster of medium-small Amazonian species that share a deep, compressed body form.

The species epithet pirauba comes from the Tupi language: pira (fish) combined with aúba (false), meaning 'false fish'. The name directly references the paper's finding of a putative polymorphic Batesian mimicry relationship with Jupiaba species in the same drainages — A. pirauba individuals appear to mimic the colour and body pattern of a co-occurring species that is presumably unpalatable or otherwise avoided by predators. The genus name Astyanax honours the son of Hector in Homer's Iliad.

Morphology

Astyanax pirauba is a short-bodied, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in SL. The body is notably deep relative to its length, giving it a somewhat disc-like outline compared with slender Astyanax species. The dorsal fin carries 8 to 9 soft rays; the anal fin, which is long as is typical for the family, carries 22 to 26 soft rays. Lateral line scale counts run 43 to 47.

No detailed published accounts of live colouration are available beyond what the original description documents. Like many Amazonian characids, the species is likely silver-bodied with a lateral stripe or dark caudal spot in life, though exact patterning details are tied to the mimicry complex described in the original paper. The short, deep body plan is the clearest external character distinguishing it from more elongate congeners that co-occur in the Xingu and Tapajós systems.

Habitat

Astyanax pirauba inhabits the clear-water creeks and small tributary streams of the Rio Xingu, Rio Tapajós, Rio Culuene, Rio Curuá, and Rio Teles Pires basins in Pará and Mato Grosso states, Brazil. Within these drainages it occupies shadowed pools between rapids, sites characterised by fast-flowing sections interspersed with calmer pockets of deeper water, always beneath well-preserved riparian forest.

The clear-water rivers of the central Amazon shield are chemically distinct from the whitewater systems to the north and the blackwater systems of the Negro basin: they carry low suspended sediment, moderate to low dissolved organic carbon, and slightly acidic to near-neutral pH. Intact riparian vegetation is functionally critical to A. pirauba's diet: the allochthonous inputs of insects and invertebrates from overhanging trees and riverside vegetation make up the majority of its food intake, so deforestation of stream margins directly degrades its feeding base.

Feeding

Astyanax pirauba is an opportunistic feeder that relies heavily on allochthonous (externally derived) inputs from the riparian zone. Gut content analyses document a diet dominated by terrestrial insects — Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (ants and wasps), and Diptera (flies) are the most frequent groups — supplemented by aquatic invertebrate larvae including Trichoptera (caddisflies), Ephemeroptera (mayflies), and Chironomidae (midges). Fish remains and plant fragments also appear in the diet, confirming that the species is a generalised opportunist rather than a dietary specialist.

The emphasis on terrestrial arthropods strongly links A. pirauba to the intact forest canopy overhead. In clearings, pastures, or otherwise deforested riparian zones, the supply of falling insects is sharply reduced, and species with this dietary profile typically decline where forest cover is lost. This feeding ecology is consistent with other small Astyanax from clear-water Amazonian tributaries that exploit the stream-forest interface.

Mating

No published study has documented the mating behaviour of Astyanax pirauba specifically. Based on the biology of closely related Astyanax species, which are well-studied in both field and laboratory settings, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care — the reproductive mode common across the vast majority of Characidae.

In Astyanax species generally, males pursue females and spawning occurs with the pair in close lateral contact, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously over fine-leaved vegetation, root masses, or sand substrate. Eggs are small, slightly adhesive, and settle onto or among the substrate rather than being guarded. No courtship territory or nest construction is known for the genus. Seasonal cues — likely the onset of the Amazonian rainy season and associated changes in temperature, conductivity, and photoperiod — are thought to trigger spawning in wild populations of clear-water Amazonian characids.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Astyanax pirauba have been documented in the scientific literature. General Astyanax breeding biology, which applies broadly across the genus, describes egg-scattering over plants or substrate with no subsequent parental care; eggs are adhesive, hatch within one to three days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming within a further day or two once the yolk sac is absorbed.

For aquarists who obtain this species, the approach used for other small Astyanax in the hobby would be the starting point: a dedicated breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, soft to moderately hard slightly acidic water in the mid-20s Celsius, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry would be expected to accept infusoria and commercial liquid fry food initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Beyond these inferences, data on this species specifically are sparse.

In the aquarium

Astyanax pirauba is not an established aquarium species and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. It is a scientific species, known from museum material and field collections, and any practical aquarium observations are absent from the literature. Its clear-water, forested-stream habitat preference and insect-heavy diet suggest it would require clean, well-oxygenated, slightly acidic to neutral water with minimal nitrates and a significant live or frozen insect-based diet component to thrive.

As a deepish-bodied Astyanax reaching nearly 4 in SL, it would need adequate swimming space and would likely be compatible with other robust, similarly sized South American community fish. The genus includes species that can be nippy toward long-finned tankmates, a tendency that might apply here. Without specific husbandry records, any detailed care guidance would be speculative; aquarists who encounter this species in specialist shipments from the Xingu or Tapajós regions should treat it as a clear-water forest-stream species and provide conditions accordingly.

Conservation

Astyanax pirauba is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on a 2018 evaluation. The assessment notes that no official conservation programmes target the species in Brazil, that its presence has not been confirmed in formally protected areas, and that the state of research into its population is unknown. The Least Concern assessment reflects a distribution across several large Amazonian drainage basins rather than endemism to a single restricted water body.

Despite the LC status, the species' dependence on intact riparian forest for its allochthonous diet makes it ecologically sensitive to the ongoing deforestation and agricultural conversion that affects large portions of the Xingu, Tapajós, and Teles Pires catchments. Large-scale infrastructure projects — including hydroelectric dams on the Xingu — have substantially altered the hydrology and habitat continuity of these systems. A. pirauba may not be globally threatened today, but it is a species whose welfare is tightly coupled to the fate of the Amazonian forests it lives beneath.
