Astyanax powelli is a small characid from the clear, fast-flowing mountain streams of Catamarca Province in northwestern Argentina, where it navigates gravel runs and aquatic vegetation in the upper reaches of the Río Paraná drainage. Described in 2017 and subsequently placed in the genus Psalidodon by some authorities, it is distinguished from its many congeners by the absence of maxillary teeth — a striking departure from the typical Astyanax dentition — together with a distinctive suite of morphometric and pigmentary characters. Like most members of this enormously diverse family, it has yet to receive a formal IUCN assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax powelli was described by Terán, Butí & Mirande in 2017 from specimens collected in the upper Río Paraná system, with the type locality recorded as the Río Sucuma in Catamarca Province, Argentina. The species belongs to Astyanax — the largest genus in Characidae and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera on Earth — a group that ranges from the southwestern United States deep into South America and encompasses several hundred valid names.

Subsequent molecular and morphological work on the broad Astyanax complex has prompted some ichthyologists to resurrect or erect segregate genera. FishBase and some recent catalogues list this species under Psalidodon powelli, reflecting arrangements that split the traditional genus by phylogenetic lines. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for valid names; researchers should verify the current placement in that resource, as the taxonomy of the Astyanax sensu lato group continues to be revised.

The species is distinguished from its congeners principally by the absence of maxillary teeth, a character unusual within the group, in combination with morphometric proportions, meristic counts, and pigmentation pattern. These characters were detailed in the original description alongside comparisons with sympatric or geographically proximate Astyanax species.

Morphology

Astyanax powelli is a small characid, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. Like most Astyanax it is a laterally compressed, fusiform fish with the rounded body profile typical of schooling stream tetras, a forked tail, and the adipose fin that identifies it as a characiform.

The most diagnostically important character is the absence of teeth on the maxilla — the upper jawbone bears no teeth in this species, whereas most Astyanax retain at least a few maxillary teeth. This is combined with a set of morphometric and meristic characters (body proportions, fin-ray and scale counts) and a pigmentation pattern that collectively separate it from congeners in the Catamarca highland region. Detailed measurements are available in the original description; field identification in areas of sympatry with other Astyanax would require examination of the mouth. Colouration in life has not been extensively described in available sources, but small highland Astyanax are typically silvery with a dark lateral stripe or spot near the caudal peduncle, as is common across the genus.

Habitat

The species is known from mountain stream environments in Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina, within the upper Río Paraná drainage. The type locality, the Río Sucuma, exemplifies the conditions the species favours: high flow velocity, clear water, and gravel substrate — the fast, well-oxygenated headwater character typical of Andean foothill drainages.

Aquatic vegetation recorded from the collection sites includes Myriophyllum aquaticum, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, and Azolla filiculoides — a mix of submerged, emergent, and floating plants that provide cover and feeding structure in the stream margins. Water in comparable upper Paraná biotopes runs warm in summer and cool in the highlands, with temperatures spanning roughly 73–84 °F across the range of the broader system; highland reaches tend toward the cooler end of that range. The high flow and clear, well-oxygenated water suggest a species with some sensitivity to stagnation and turbidity.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Astyanax powelli is available in published sources. Like virtually all Astyanax, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates, aquatic insects and their larvae, algae, and plant material — the generalist diet that has made this genus so ecologically successful across a vast range of South American and Central American habitats.

In the aquarium, small Astyanax typically accept a broad range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. Good-quality fine flake or micro-pellets form a practical staple, supplemented with small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, or bloodworm. A varied diet supports condition and colouration in what are otherwise undemanding feeders.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Astyanax powelli have been published. The genus as a whole is characterised by egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawning without parental care, and Astyanax powelli is expected to follow this pattern based on its phylogenetic placement and the consistent breeding biology seen across the broader group.

Males in typical Astyanax species pursue females actively during spawning events. Spawning is triggered by environmental cues — rising water temperature, increased current, or rain — and occurs in loose aggregations or pairs moving through vegetation or open water. Adhesive eggs may catch on fine-leaved aquatic plants or settle onto the substrate.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Astyanax powelli has not been documented in the available hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with the broader genus, breeding would involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs and no parental care from either parent. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs.

For hobbyists attempting to breed this species by analogy with other small highland Astyanax: a slightly cooler breeding temperature toward the lower end of the species' range, with increased water movement to simulate the onset of the Andean rainy season, may help condition and trigger spawning. Fry would be expected to be small at hatching and require infusoria or other microscopic first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Astyanax powelli is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever encountered in the trade. Its habitat profile — clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated mountain streams with a gravel bed and aquatic vegetation — suggests that an aquarium replicating these conditions would suit it best: strong filtration providing good current, high oxygenation, a gravel or pebble substrate, and hardy plants tolerant of current such as Myriophyllum or similar fine-leaved species.

As a small schooling characid it should be kept in groups of at least six, and tankmates should be chosen for compatibility in both temperament and water-parameter requirements. The temperature range of 73–84 °F (with cooler conditions appropriate for a highland species) and the clear-water origin suggest it would not do well in warm, low-oxygen setups. Given the absence of any established trade presence, wild-caught specimens are extremely unlikely to reach hobbyists, and no captive-bred strains are known.

Conservation

Astyanax powelli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the time of writing; neither the name Astyanax powelli nor Psalidodon powelli appears in the IUCN database, leaving its formal conservation status as Not Evaluated (NE).

The species is a highland endemic from a geographically restricted drainage in Catamarca Province, Argentina. Highland stream endemics in Andean foothill systems are broadly vulnerable to the pressures characteristic of that landscape: water extraction for agriculture and livestock, deforestation of riparian zones, introduction of non-native fish species, and the effects of climate change on high-altitude hydrology. Whether any of these pressures substantially affects the Río Sucuma population is not documented in available sources. A formal range assessment and conservation evaluation would be a useful contribution given the species' recent description and limited distributional data.
