Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax procerus was formally described by Zilda M. S. de Lucena, Alberto L. Netto-Ferreira de Castro, and Vinicius A. Bertaco in 2013, as one of three new species of Astyanax from drainages of southern Brazil. The original description — published in a single paper treating the group — distinguished A. procerus from its congeners principally by the possession of outer-row premaxillary teeth, a character shared with the related A. xiru from the same paper. The species is endemic to the Laguna dos Patos system in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, occurring in the upper and middle reaches of the Rio Taquari-Antas and the Rio Jacuí.
Astyanax is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the Neotropical ichthyofauna, with well over one hundred valid species spread across almost every freshwater drainage in the Americas. The genus sits within the family Characidae and the order Characiformes. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax procerus Lucena, Castro & Bertaco, 2013. No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised, and the species has not been subject to generic revision since its description.
Morphology
The most immediately apparent feature of Astyanax procerus is the body shape implied by its name: it is a notably deep-bodied Astyanax, its body depth proportionally greater than in many of its close relatives, giving it a more compressed, disc-like profile. This high body depth is the primary external character that anchors its identification in the original description. Maximum recorded standard length is 4.5 in, placing it among the larger members of the genus.
In coloration it is typical of southern Brazilian Astyanax: a silvery to pale yellowish body with a dark lateral stripe or band running from behind the head toward the caudal peduncle, often ending in a dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin — the caudal spot common to many Astyanax. The fins are generally hyaline to pale yellowish. As with most Astyanax, the mouth is terminal, the premaxilla bears multiple rows of tricuspid teeth, and the outer-row premaxillary teeth are a diagnostic character in the original description. Detailed meristic data (fin-ray counts, scale rows, lateral-line pore counts) are documented in the species description but are not practically useful for field identification in isolation from laboratory examination.
Habitat
Astyanax procerus is endemic to the Laguna dos Patos drainage system in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, recorded from the upper and middle sections of the Rio Taquari-Antas and the Rio Jacuí. The Laguna dos Patos is the world's largest coastal lagoon and drains a mosaic of subtropical rivers and streams across a broad catchment that includes rolling pampas grassland, highland plateaux, and the escarpment of the Serra Gaúcha.
The rivers of this system at higher elevations where A. procerus is found tend to be swift, cool to temperate, well-oxygenated, and often running over rocky or sandy substrates. The subtropical climate of Rio Grande do Sul imposes a distinct seasonal temperature cycle — winters are mild to cold by Neotropical standards, with water temperatures occasionally dropping toward 59 °F or below, and summers are warm but seldom extreme. This thermic seasonality is a departure from the year-round warmth of most Astyanax habitats further north and is ecologically significant for understanding both the species' wild biology and any potential captive requirements.
Feeding
Astyanax procerus has not been the subject of dedicated dietary studies, and its feeding ecology must be inferred from its morphology and the well-studied habits of closely related, ecologically similar species in the same drainage. Astyanax in general are omnivorous generalists — opportunistic feeders that take whatever small food items are available: aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, plant matter, algae, detritus, and occasionally smaller fish.
The species is a benthopelagic fish, meaning it occupies both the water column and areas near the bottom, which fits the broad feeding niche characteristic of the genus. In the rivers of Rio Grande do Sul, food availability tracks the subtropical seasonal cycle, with insect emergence peaks in warmer months likely driving seasonal variation in diet. In the aquarium, fish of this lineage almost universally accept prepared foods — flake, micropellets, and granules — alongside frozen and live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm.
Mating
No published studies have directly described the mating behaviour of Astyanax procerus in the wild. Based on the biology of Astyanax as a genus, the species is expected to be an open-water egg-scatterer: males court receptive females during spawning events, and eggs are released and fertilised without nest-building or preparation of a spawning site. Spawning in southern Brazilian Astyanax is often linked to seasonal cues — rising water temperatures in spring and early summer, coupled with increased flow following rains — rather than being a continuous year-round event.
Male characids commonly engage in active pursuit of females, with courtship consisting of body quivering, lateral display, and close following. Adhesive eggs are typically deposited among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged root masses, or over sandy substrate, though in many Astyanax the eggs are semi-buoyant or non-adhesive and drift freely. As with the vast majority of characids, parental care is entirely absent after spawning.
Breeding
Astyanax procerus has not been reported in the aquarium trade or captive-bred in any documented programme, and no specific breeding protocols for the species exist. Its breeding biology can be extrapolated from the prolific and well-studied genus: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or open substrate, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, and no parental care. Adults in a spawning event will readily consume their own eggs, so any captive breeding attempt would require prompt removal of eggs or adults after spawning.
For temperate-adapted Astyanax from the Rio Grande do Sul highlands, a seasonal temperature drop in winter — simulating the natural cool-season — followed by warming in spring is likely to be the most reliable spawning trigger. Incubation times in warm subtropical Astyanax species typically run 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature, with fry becoming free-swimming shortly after hatching. Initial fry foods would follow standard characid husbandry: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii.
In the aquarium
Astyanax procerus is not established in the aquarium hobby as of this writing, and captive specimens are not commercially available. It is a scientifically described species of regional interest, documented from rivers accessible to collectors in southern Brazil, but it has not crossed into the ornamental trade and is known only from museum specimens and ichthyological field surveys.
Should it become available, its care requirements would follow those of comparable cool-water South American characids: a spacious tank with good flow and oxygenation to replicate its native river habitats, a temperature range spanning the subtropical cycle (roughly 64–79 °F), neutral to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline water, and a diet of varied prepared and live foods. Its deep body would make it a visually distinct addition among the typical slender-bodied Astyanax kept as bait fish or ornamentals. It is unlikely to pose compatibility problems with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. The species has no recorded common name in any language.
Conservation
Astyanax procerus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment conducted in November 2018 by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The Least Concern listing reflects an absence of evidence of rapid population decline and no immediate major threat identified at the time of assessment.
However, the species is endemic to a single drainage system — the Laguna dos Patos basin in Rio Grande do Sul — which imposes an intrinsic geographic limitation on its resilience. The rivers of this system face ongoing pressures typical of heavily agricultural southern Brazil: sedimentation and turbidity increases from land-clearing and intensive farming, water extraction for irrigation, pollution from agrochemicals and livestock effluent, and the presence of non-native fish species introduced by the bait-fish trade or escaped from aquaculture. Narrow endemics in agricultural catchments can remain Least Concern on paper while experiencing local habitat degradation that national assessments are slow to capture. Continued survey work in the Rio Taquari-Antas and Rio Jacuí catchments would clarify the actual population status of this recently described species.
