Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax pynandi was formally described by Casciotta, Almirón, Bechara, Roux and Ruíz Díaz in 2003, with the original account published in the Revue suisse de zoologie (volume 110, issue 4). The type locality is the Esteros del Iberá wetland complex in Corrientes Province, Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Psalidodon pynandi (Casciotta et al., 2003), following the comprehensive 2020 revision by Terán and colleagues that reorganised a large section of the old Astyanax assemblage in South America into multiple resurrected and newly defined genera. The parenthetical authority reflects the change of genus from the original combination.
Psalidodon is one of several genera split out of the historically catch-all Astyanax during that revision, and many species formerly included under Astyanax are now placed there. The species has no widely used vernacular name; its identification in the field requires comparison with voucher material from the type locality. Older literature and databases may still list it under Astyanax, and both names appear in the scientific record.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data for Astyanax pynandi remain sparse in the publicly available literature, and size records have not been compiled in aggregated databases such as FishBase. The species is treated as a small characid consistent with others in the Esteros del Iberá fauna, with the compressed, silvery body and moderate lateral line typical of the Astyanax group. Benthopelagic in habit, it occupies the lower to mid water column, as noted by FishBase.
A trophic level of 3.0 is assigned by FishBase, indicating a generalist omnivore at the base of the consumer chain — consistent with most small Astyanax-group characids that feed on invertebrates, detritus, and plant material in proportion to availability. Habitat
Astyanax pynandi is endemic to the Esteros del Iberá, a sprawling complex of marshes, lagoons, slow channels, and seasonally flooded grasslands in Corrientes Province, northeastern Argentina. The Iberá is one of the largest freshwater wetland systems in South America, second in area only to the Pantanal, and it sustains an exceptionally diverse fish fauna. FishBase classifies the species as a subtropical freshwater fish, consistent with the warm, seasonal climate of the Argentine Mesopotamia.
The wetland environment is characterised by shallow, warm, often densely vegetated water bodies with slow to negligible current. Water chemistry in the Iberá tends toward soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the region's low-gradient, nutrient-rich landscape. The species' restriction to this single drainage contrasts with the wide distributions of many of its closest relatives and may reflect both recent speciation and the geographic isolation of the Iberá basin within the broader Paraná system.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Astyanax pynandi has been published in the accessible literature. The trophic level of 3.0 assigned by FishBase places it among generalist consumers, and by analogy with closely related Astyanax-group species in comparable South American wetland habitats, it likely subsists on a mixed diet of small invertebrates, insect larvae, plant material, and organic detritus.
In common with most small characids, it is expected to be an opportunistic feeder adjusting its intake to the most abundant prey in its environment. In the Esteros del Iberá, seasonal flooding drives pulses of invertebrate productivity that would fuel small fish populations through the wet season. In the aquarium, small individuals of related species accept fine flake, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods of appropriate size.
Mating
No spawning observations specific to Astyanax pynandi have been published. By the reproductive biology shared across the Astyanax and Psalidodon groups, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males likely pursue females through vegetation and open water, releasing sperm as females scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants and submerged structure.
As with most characids, spawning is probably cued by seasonal changes in temperature, photoperiod, and water levels associated with the Iberá's wet-season flood pulse. The IUCN notes a minimum population doubling time of less than fifteen months, a figure estimated from life-history parameters of related species, which implies rapid maturation and frequent reproduction consistent with egg-scattering strategies.
Breeding
No captive breeding accounts for Astyanax pynandi have been located in the hobby or scientific literature, and the species is not known to be maintained in the ornamental trade. Given the reproductive biology of congeners, captive spawning would be expected to follow the pattern common to small Astyanax-group tetras: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with eggs hatching after two to three days at tropical temperatures, and fry requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to nauplii.
The species' rarity in culture means that aquarium care data must be inferred from better-known relatives rather than from direct experience. Any successful captive breeding of this endemic species would be of interest both to the hobby and to conservation science.
In the aquarium
Astyanax pynandi is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist collections or ichthyological research. No published aquarium husbandry notes are available. Based on the biology of closely related Esteros del Iberá characids and the broader Astyanax group, it would be expected to do well in a warm, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral aquarium with dense planting, subdued lighting, and gentle filtration mimicking the slow, vegetated waters of the Iberá.
Small characids of this type are generally peaceful, active schooling fish that benefit from being kept in groups of six or more. For aquarists interested in the broader Psalidodon or Astyanax complex, more readily available species from the same biogeographic region — such as Astyanax fasciatus or other Mesopotamian tetras — offer a window into the ecology and behaviour of this group while captive populations of pynandi itself remain essentially absent from the hobby.
Conservation
Astyanax pynandi (as Psalidodon pynandi) was assessed for the IUCN Red List in November 2020 and assigned Least Concern (LC) status. The assessment acknowledges the species' narrow endemic distribution within the Esteros del Iberá but notes the high resilience indicated by its estimated minimum population doubling time of less than fifteen months — a rate typical of small, short-lived characids with high reproductive output.
The Iberá wetland system is partially protected and has seen significant conservation investment in recent decades, including the reintroduction of large vertebrates to the region. While no targeted conservation programme exists for this small characid, the integrity of its wetland habitat is the key variable for its long-term persistence. Drainage, agricultural encroachment, and changes to the natural flood regime of the Paraná basin remain potential future threats to the Iberá's fish fauna as a whole.
