Astyanax rioverde is a small characin endemic to the Río Pánuco drainage of east-central Mexico, where it inhabits roadside ditches, spring pools, and small tributary streams in the states of San Luis Potosí and Querétaro. Described formally in a 2017 revision of North and Central American Astyanax, it is one of several closely related species that were historically lumped under the name 'Mexican Tetra' before meristic and morphological analysis separated them. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2018, though the population trend is listed as decreasing and parts of its range face pressure from dam construction and agricultural runoff.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax rioverde was described by Lozano-Vilano and Schmitter-Soto in a 2017 revision of the genus Astyanax across Central and North America, published in the Journal of Natural History (vol. 51, nos. 23–24). That revision circumscribed nine new species from the region, separating populations long treated informally as the 'Mexican Tetra' into diagnosable taxa on the basis of meristic and morphological characters. The type locality is a ditch south of the city of Rioverde in San Luis Potosí State, Mexico, within the Río Pánuco drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Within Astyanax, the species belongs to the sprawling 'mexicanus group' of North and Central American characins that includes the widely kept blind cave tetra. The authority combination — Lozano-Vilano & Schmitter-Soto, 2017 — appears without parentheses because the species was described directly in Astyanax, where it remains. Before formal description it was sometimes noted as a 'Río Verde subspecies' of A. mexicanus in field surveys, but morphological evidence supports its recognition as a distinct species.

Morphology

Astyanax rioverde reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. It is a moderately deep-bodied characin — body depth approximately 37% of standard length — with the compressed, silvery profile typical of small Astyanax. Diagnostic meristic characters given in the original description include 9 dorsal soft rays, approximately 20 anal soft rays, and 32–33 vertebrae; scales around the caudal peduncle number modally 16.5.

Key features distinguishing it from sympatric or near-sympatric congeners include an anterior fontanel that is short, convex-sided, and sharp-tipped; infraorbital bone II that is triangular with an angled base; and an oval humeral spot. Body colour in life is silvery with a faint lateral stripe and the dark humeral blotch typical of the genus. Males in breeding condition develop fine hooks on the anal fin rays, a widespread trait in Astyanax. Females are generally more robust-bodied than males.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Río Pánuco basin in east-central Mexico, recorded from the Río Santa María (a tributary of the Río Verde) in San Luis Potosí and from Río Jalpan in Querétaro. Field surveys in the region have encountered it in a variety of lowland and foothill lentic and lotic habitats: shallow roadside ditches, spring-fed pools (including the famed Charco Azul near Rioverde city), and small tributary streams feeding into the larger Río Verde system.

The IUCN assessment describes the primary habitats as small ditches (to roughly 16 ft depth) and small tributary streams entering larger permanent rivers. The fish co-occurs with other members of the Río Pánuco ichthyofauna including endemic goodeids, native cichlids, and gambusias. Some sites are eutrophic and intermittent, suggesting the species tolerates degraded conditions to a degree, though dam-impounded sections have led to local extirpation at some historical collection points.

Water conditions in the Río Pánuco lowlands tend toward warm tropical temperatures consistent with San Luis Potosí's semi-arid to subtropical climate. The IUCN biosphere reserve Sierra Gorda encompasses parts of the Río Verde and Río de Santa María catchments within the species' range.

Feeding

Astyanax rioverde is an omnivore with a trophic level of approximately 2.9 (±0.4) as reported on FishBase, placing it in the middle of the food chain as a mixed consumer of plant material and small invertebrates. The natural diet in ditches and small streams likely includes aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, algae, and any terrestrial invertebrates that fall to the surface — the opportunistic foraging strategy typical of the genus.

In the aquarium the species accepts a broad range of prepared and live foods. Flake and small pellets form an acceptable staple, but condition and breeding readiness improve with regular supplements of small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. As a benthopelagic species it feeds at multiple levels in the water column rather than being confined to surface or bottom feeding.

Mating

Like other members of Astyanax, A. rioverde is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. Males are typically more slender than females and develop fine anal fin hooks when in breeding condition — a trait that can help distinguish the sexes outside of spawning periods once the hooks are apparent under magnification. Females in ripe condition become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the belly.

Courting males pursue females actively, displaying alongside them and attempting to nudge them toward spawning sites among fine-leaved vegetation or other structure. Spawning involves the broadcast release of eggs that sink or adhere loosely to the substrate and plants. No pair bond forms, and both sexes will readily consume their own eggs if given the opportunity.

Breeding

Astyanax rioverde has not been extensively documented as an aquarium breeding subject in the hobby literature, but given its membership in a genus whose species are among the most straightforward egg-scatterers to breed in captivity, it is expected to follow the standard Astyanax pattern. Conditioned adults spawn over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, scattering small adhesive eggs that fall to or lodge within the spawning medium.

Breeders working with similar Astyanax species typically separate adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Eggs hatch within a few days at warm tropical temperatures. Fry are initially tiny and require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth to juvenile size is reasonably rapid under good conditions with frequent small feedings.

In the aquarium

Astyanax rioverde is rarely seen in the hobby under its own name. It has been collected incidentally in field surveys of the Río Verde region and noted as difficult to distinguish from allied species without close examination, which has historically meant that specimens may have entered the trade as generic 'Mexican Tetras' or been overlooked entirely. For dedicated hobbyists interested in the North American Astyanax complex, it presents an opportunity to keep a valid species with genuine scientific and biogeographic interest.

Care requirements align with what is expected for the genus: a shoal of six or more individuals in a reasonably sized aquarium with good filtration, open swimming space, and some planted areas. Water conditions should be warm and near-neutral, matching the subtropical lowland rivers of its range. The species is hardy and undemanding once established. Its modest size (to 3 in SL) and peaceful shoaling behaviour make it compatible with a wide range of similarly sized tankmates.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Astyanax rioverde as Least Concern in September 2018, with the assessment published in 2019. Despite that status, the population trend is recorded as decreasing. The justification for Least Concern is that the global population was not considered to meet the threshold for a threatened category at the time of assessment, given that the species is abundant and widespread within its preferred microhabitats of ditches and small tributaries.

The primary threats identified in the IUCN assessment are natural system modifications — particularly dam construction that alters water levels and habitat quality — and agricultural and forestry pollution that delivers elevated nutrient loads, stimulating algae and water hyacinth growth in impounded sections. Some historic collection localities may have lost their populations. Portions of the species' range fall within the Sierra Gorda UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve, which covers sections of the Río Verde and Río de Santa María catchments and provides some degree of habitat protection.
