Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax ruberrimus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913. The holotype (FMNH-56122) was collected from Istmina, a town on the San Juan River drainage in the Chocó department of Colombia — a river system draining into the Pacific. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Astyanax ruberrimus Eigenmann, 1913.
The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, with well over a hundred recognised species distributed from the southwestern United States through Central America and across much of South America. Several nominal species are suspected to represent species complexes, and the DePaul freshwater-fishes resource notes that A. ruberrimus itself may represent a complex in Ecuador, meaning the true number of biological species currently lumped under this name is uncertain. Some databases have reclassified members of this group into the family Acestrorhamphidae, but the top-level family assignment follows Characidae as used in the site's data schema.

Morphology
Astyanax ruberrimus is a small, deep-bodied characid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in for the type series, but the DePaul freshwater-fishes account gives a maximum of 6 in total length (common to around 3 in TL), suggesting the FishBase figure may refer to a different life stage or a different specimen set — the 3 in figure is likely more representative of wild adults in hand.
Meristic counts from examined material are: 38–39 lateral-line scales; dorsal-fin formula ii,9; anal-fin formula iii,23–28; pectoral-fin formula i,12–13; pelvic-fin formula i,7. The relatively long anal fin (23–28 rays) is characteristic of Astyanax and related characins. Coloration details are not well documented in available sources; the specific epithet ruberrimus (Latin: very red, superlative of ruber) suggests the type specimens showed strong red or reddish pigmentation, likely in the fins or body.
Habitat
Astyanax ruberrimus occupies clear to moderately turbid lowland and foothill rivers of the Pacific slope. Its confirmed range spans northwestern Ecuador — the Esmeraldas, Santiago-Cayapas, Atacames, Súa, and Mompiche drainages — and the Colombian Pacific-slope rivers: the San Juan, Atrato, Baudo, Anchicayá, Dagua, Patía, and Juradó systems. The species is benthopelagic in habit, according to FishBase, meaning it frequents the water column above the substrate rather than being strictly bottom-dwelling.
The Chocó biogeographic region that encompasses this range is one of the wettest and most biodiverse on Earth, characterised by warm, often tea-coloured or clear soft-water rivers with heavy rainfall year-round. Dam construction and artisanal and industrial mining in this region — particularly gold and platinum mining in the Colombian Chocó — represent documented threats to river habitats, and the DePaul account flags these concerns alongside the species' local commonness at low elevations in some rivers.
Seasonal upstream migrations have been observed in June and July, a pattern documented in other large Astyanax and suggesting that A. ruberrimus moves to spawning or feeding grounds with the seasonal rise in river levels.
Feeding
Astyanax ruberrimus is an omnivore. The DePaul freshwater-fishes account lists fruits, plant material, insects (including beetles), and nematodes among the gut-content records, and FishBase assigns a trophic level of 2.9 ± 0.4, consistent with a generalist feeding strategy that combines plant and animal matter in roughly equal measure.
This breadth of diet is typical of Astyanax generally. The genus occupies a wide ecological role across its range: some populations are predominantly insectivorous, others lean heavily on fruits and seeds (particularly in flooded forest habitats), and many take whatever is seasonally available. In the Chocó rivers, fallen fruit and invertebrates washed in by heavy rains are likely important dietary components during high-water periods.
Mating
No detailed behavioural studies of mating in Astyanax ruberrimus are available in the published literature. Based on the biology of the genus and family, spawning is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of characids: males and females come together in brief spawning chases, releasing eggs and milt in the water column or near fine-leaved vegetation, with no pair bond formed and no subsequent parental involvement.
The seasonal upstream movements recorded in June and July — a high-water period in the Chocó — are consistent with reproductive migration toward upstream spawning grounds, a pattern well documented in other Astyanax species. In many characids, spawning is triggered by rising water levels and associated environmental cues including photoperiod, temperature change, and increased food availability in newly flooded habitats.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Astyanax ruberrimus have been documented in the sources available. Based on the family's biology, breeding would be expected to follow the standard characid mode: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with no parental care. Adults would likely consume their own eggs if not separated.
Related Astyanax species have been bred in aquaria, typically in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, with conditioning on live and frozen foods and a separate spawning tank with a fine-leaved plant or spawning mop. Whether A. ruberrimus is in the hobby in sufficient numbers for breeding accounts to exist is unclear — it does not appear to be an established aquarium fish.
In the aquarium
Astyanax ruberrimus does not appear to be an established species in the ornamental trade, and no hobby-specific husbandry accounts have been located. Its natural habitat — warm, soft, Chocó-region rivers — suggests it would do best in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH roughly 6.0–7.5) at temperatures in the 73–82 °F range.
If kept, basic characid practice would apply: a planted tank with subdued lighting and open swimming space, kept in a school of six or more, fed a varied diet of flake, small pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates. Its small common adult size (around 3 in TL) makes it suitable for a community of similarly sized, peaceful species. Aquarists seeking Colombian or Ecuadorian Pacific-slope species should confirm a captive-bred source, as wild collection from Chocó rivers is subject to the same habitat pressures documented for the region.
Conservation
Astyanax ruberrimus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. No assessment with a numeric entry for this species was found during research, and its global conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The species' range falls entirely within the Colombian and Ecuadorian Chocó, a region under significant anthropogenic pressure from alluvial gold and platinum mining, dam construction, and deforestation. The DePaul freshwater-fishes account notes these concerns directly. The broader Astyanax genus is resilient and often locally common, and A. ruberrimus is described as locally common at low elevations in some rivers — but whether that abundance is sustained across its range, and how populations respond to the documented habitat changes in the Chocó, is unknown in the absence of survey data. The taxonomic uncertainty — the possibility that the name covers a species complex — also complicates any conservation assessment, since undescribed cryptic species within a complex may have narrower ranges and higher risk than the aggregate distribution suggests.
