Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax rupununi was formally described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1914, with the type locality given as the Rupununi River in what was then British Guiana (now Guyana). The species subsequently fell into synonymy for much of the twentieth century, lumped together with other Astyanax forms under broader species concepts that were common practice before modern morphological and molecular tools sharpened delimitation within the genus.
The taxon was revalidated in a 2003 study by Valdenir Garutti, who reviewed a suite of Astyanax species and recognised rupununi as a valid, distinct species on the basis of museum material including the type series. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records Astyanax rupununi Fowler, 1914 as the valid name; because the species has always been placed in Astyanax, no parenthetical is applied to the authority. Astyanax is the largest genus in the family Characidae and one of the largest vertebrate genera overall, with several hundred described species spanning Central and South America.
Morphology
Astyanax rupununi is a small, fusiform tetra with the characteristic body plan of the genus: moderately compressed laterally, a slightly arched dorsal profile, a blunt snout, and a forked tail. Like most Astyanax it carries the family's defining feature — a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins — and the inner series of teeth bears the multicuspidate shape typical of the genus. Detailed meristic and morphometric data are sparse in the accessible literature, and the species is distinguished from its congeners primarily by a combination of lateral-line scale counts, fin-ray counts, and body proportions documented in the original description and the 2003 revalidation study.
The colouration follows the typical Astyanax pattern: a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, sometimes ending in a dark caudal spot. The flanks may show faint iridescence under good light. There is no dramatic sexual colour dimorphism; females are generally deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The Rupununi River drains a large expanse of seasonally flooded savannah in southern Guyana, rising in the Kanuku Mountains and flowing northward to join the Essequibo system. The landscape oscillates between wet and dry seasons: in the rains the Rupununi Savannah floods extensively, connecting river channels into broad shallow lakes and allowing fish to disperse across the grasslands; in the dry season water retreats into permanent channels and isolated pools that become the refugia from which populations recolonise.
The species occupies both the main river channels and the associated blackwater and clear-water savanna streams that characterise this landscape. Regional biodiversity surveys record water temperatures in the Guyana savanna drainage systems in the range of approximately 73–82 °F, with the chemistry of these waters varying from soft, slightly acidic blackwater streams to more turbid, nutrient-richer channels in the flooded savanna. Microhabitats include marginal vegetation, submerged grasses, and the shallow edges of pools where cover and food are most accessible.
Feeding
Astyanax rupununi is an omnivore, as is typical of the genus. The Garutti revalidation study notes omnivory for museum-context records of the species, consistent with the broad opportunistic feeding strategies documented across Astyanax. In savanna river systems the diet is driven by seasonal availability: invertebrates (aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, small crustaceans), algae, and plant matter all contribute depending on flood season and microhabitat.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods without difficulty. Good-quality flake and micro-pellets form an adequate staple, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm to keep fish in good condition. A varied diet maintains colouration and breeding fitness.
Mating
Astyanax rupununi is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the general reproductive pattern of the genus and of small Neotropical tetras broadly. In the wild, spawning is likely seasonal and tied to the flood cycle: rising water temperatures and the expansion of shallow, vegetation-rich flooded areas in the wet season provide the environmental cues that trigger breeding in many savanna characids.
Males typically become more active and may pursue females during pre-spawning behaviour. Spawning occurs in the open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with eggs scattered non-adhesively or lightly adhesive among plant material. No courtship territory is defended and no pair bond is formed.
Breeding
Breeding Astyanax rupununi in captivity follows the standard approach for small egg-scattering tetras. A separate, dimly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops) provides both spawning substrate and protection for the eggs. A conditioned pair or small group can be introduced in the evening; spawning often occurs in the early morning hours.
The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs sink among the vegetation or settle on the substrate. Adults offer no parental care and will readily consume the eggs, so parents should be removed once spawning is complete. Eggs hatch within approximately 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods should be infusoria or a commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Data on specific incubation periods and clutch sizes for this species are not well documented in the available literature.
In the aquarium
Astyanax rupununi is a lively, active schooling fish suited to a community aquarium with other small to medium-sized peaceful species. Like most Astyanax, it is a confident feeder and swimmer that appreciates open water in the mid-range of the tank as well as some planted cover at the margins. A group of six or more individuals brings out the natural schooling behaviour and reduces individual stress.
Water conditions should reflect the warm, soft-to-moderately-hard savanna streams of its native Guyana drainage: temperatures in the range of 73–82 °F, pH tolerant across a moderate range from slightly acidic to neutral. Good filtration and regular water changes are more important than hitting precise chemical targets. The species is relatively undemanding in captivity and not prone to disease under stable conditions. It is not a widely traded species in the hobby at present and is more likely to be encountered through specialist importers or breeders with an interest in Neotropical tetras, but it is straightforward to keep when obtained.
Conservation
Astyanax rupununi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The Rupununi drainage is part of the larger Essequibo basin, one of the least-degraded major river systems in South America, and Guyana retains large areas of intact forest and savanna habitat relative to many other Neotropical countries. No major acute threats to the species are currently identified, and its range within the Rupununi system appears stable.
The Rupununi Savannah is recognised as an important wetland area for Guyana's biodiversity; regional assessments have documented its role in supporting diverse fish communities across the seasonal flood cycle. As with many small Neotropical characids, the species is data-deficient in some respects — detailed population surveys and precise range limits remain incompletely documented — but the broad ecological context supports the current low-concern assessment.
