Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax saguazu was described by Jorge Casciotta, Adriana Almirón, and Mabel Azpelicueta in 2003, with the type locality given as Arroyo Once Vueltas, a tributary of the Uruguay River drainage in Misiones Province, Argentina. The original description placed the species within the large, pantropical genus Astyanax, and the Catalog of Life lists it under the authority Casciotta, Almirón & Azpelicueta, 2003. Treatment Banks of the Plazi repository preserve the original description record.
Astyanax is one of the largest genera in Characidae and occurs from the south-western United States to central Argentina, encompassing hundreds of recognised species in a wide range of body plans. Within this complex, A. saguazu is a modestly sized, laterally compressed schooling fish with no particularly unusual meristic profile. A. saguazu was long considered confined to a small number of localities in Misiones; Serra et al. (2013) extended its known range into Uruguay (middle and upper Cuareim River, Artigas Department; upper Arapey River, Salto Department) and indicated records from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states in Brazil, establishing that the species is an endemic of the Uruguay River basin at large rather than a narrow Misiones endemic.
Morphology
Astyanax saguazu reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, based on male or unsexed material reported in the literature. Like most Astyanax it is laterally compressed, with a typical characid body plan: a roughly oval profile, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. The humeral region bears a distinct dark spot, and a prominent black mark on the caudal peduncle extends into the middle caudal rays — characters that feature in the original description and help distinguish the species in the field.
Live coloration is distinctive. The flanks are silver-grey with a broad horizontal silver midlateral stripe running from behind the head to the caudal peduncle spot. The dorsal, adipose, pelvic, and caudal fins are yellow; the pectoral fins are yellowish. The anal fin is yellow with a reddish anterior border, and the outer caudal rays show reddish colouration. The upper iris is dark red. The dorsal surface of the body is brownish. This combination of yellow fins, red accents, and clear lateral stripe makes A. saguazu recognisable among the syntopic Astyanax assemblage of the Uruguay basin.
Habitat
Astyanax saguazu is endemic to the Uruguay River basin, occurring in middle and upper-course streams in Misiones Province (Argentina), the departments of Artigas and Salto (Uruguay), and the southern Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The species inhabits tropical to subtropical clear-water streams — upland tributaries with relatively stable, well-oxygenated flow rather than the large lowland mainstem.
The type locality, Arroyo Once Vueltas, is a small forest-stream tributary in Misiones, and the Uruguayan records are from the mid-to-upper courses of the Cuareim and Arapey rivers — drainages fed by upland plateau country. Clear-water stream systems in this part of South America are typically warm in summer, cooler in winter, slightly acidic to neutral, and low in suspended sediment. Feeding

In the aquarium, members of this genus accept a wide range of prepared and live foods without difficulty. High-quality flake and small sinking pellets form a practical staple; frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm support condition and colour. A varied diet is preferable to a mono-diet of dry food. Like most schooling characids, A. saguazu feeds actively through the water column and benefits from regular small meals rather than single large daily feedings.
Mating
Astyanax species are egg-scattering open-water or plant-associated spawners, and A. saguazu is expected to follow the same pattern. No field or captive behavioural study of the species' mating system was found in the available sources, so the following is based on genus-level knowledge.
In Astyanax generally, males pursue females and spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation, with pairs or small groups releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. As a small to medium-sized Astyanax reaching around 3.5 in, the species would suit a well-planted community aquarium of 31.5 in or more in length, maintained in warm, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water approximating the subtropical streams of the Uruguay system. A school of six or more would show more natural behaviour than isolated individuals. The genus as a whole is hardy, tolerant of a range of water parameters, and peaceful with similarly sized tankmates; very small fish may be nipped or eaten. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and fine-leaved planting would complement the species' clear-water stream origin and bring out the yellow-and-silver coloration. Given its non-commercial status, A. saguazu is primarily of interest to specialist collectors and researchers rather than the general fishkeeping community.
Conservation
Astyanax saguazu has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no published assessment was found for either this name or the synonym Psalidodon saguazu. The species is therefore treated as Not Evaluated (NE) from a formal conservation standpoint. Its known range is restricted to the upper and middle portions of the Uruguay River drainage across three countries — Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil — with all confirmed localities in clear upland stream systems.
The clear-water tributary streams of the Uruguay basin face ongoing pressures from agriculture, deforestation of riparian zones, and alteration of flow regimes, pressures that affect many small-bodied stream characids in this part of South America. The extension of the species' range documented by Serra et al. (2013) beyond the original Misiones type locality suggests the population is not as narrowly restricted as once thought, which is a modest positive. A formal IUCN evaluation would require survey data on population sizes and trend, which do not appear to be available in the published literature to date.
