Astyanax serratus is a small characin from the Xingu River drainage of Pará state, Brazil, described by Garavello and Sampaio in 2010 from the Cristalino River, a blackwater tributary of the Xingu. Like most members of the sprawling genus Astyanax, it is a trim, laterally compressed schooling fish reaching roughly 1.5–2 in standard length, at home in the acidic, tannin-stained waters of Amazonian forest streams. It has not been formally assessed by the IUCN and is virtually absent from the ornamental trade, but its restricted type locality within the Xingu basin — a river system internationally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot — gives the species particular scientific interest.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax serratus was described by Julio César Garavello and Erica Pellegrini Caramaschi Sampaio in 2010, with the type locality recorded as the Cristalino River, a tributary of the lower Xingu River in Pará state, Brazil. The species is placed in Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, the largest genus of the family Characidae and one of the most taxonomically complex in Neotropical ichthyology, encompassing several hundred valid species distributed from the southwestern United States to Patagonia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Astyanax serratus Garavello & Sampaio, 2010 as the valid name; because the species was described directly in Astyanax, where it remains, no parenthetical is used in the authority.

The specific epithet serratus is Latin for 'serrated' or 'saw-toothed', a reference to the dentition characteristic of the taxon — the prominent, multi-cuspidate teeth that distinguish it within its immediate assemblage. Characins as a group are named for their teeth (Greek: charax, a pointed stake), so the epithet underlines the family's defining feature at the species level. No subspecies are recognised. Astyanax has been the subject of multiple phylogenetic revisions, and genus-level rearrangements within the Stevardiinae and broader Characidae have become increasingly common; the placement of A. serratus within subgeneric groupings had not been firmly established in the literature available at the time of this writing.

Morphology

Astyanax serratus is a small tetra reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length (SL), the typical size class for the smaller-bodied members of the genus. The body form is the classic characin profile: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with a roughly oval or elliptical outline, a single dorsal fin, and the small adipose fin behind it that serves as a family-level hallmark of the Characidae.

Like other Astyanax, it is silvery overall with the reflective lateral stripe common to schooling characins. The distinguishing characters described in the original account relate primarily to dentition — the serrated, multi-cuspidate teeth that give the species its name — and to meristic and morphometric details (counts of lateral-line scales, fin rays, and proportional measurements) that separate it from congeners in the Xingu drainage. In life, the species likely shows the faint bluish or greenish lateral sheen and a dark spot at the base of the caudal fin that characterise many Amazonian Astyanax; precise colour notes from the original description were not available in cached sources.

Habitat

The type locality is the Cristalino River, a tributary of the Xingu River in Pará state, Brazil. The Xingu is one of the great right-bank tributaries of the Amazon, draining the southeastern Brazilian Shield, and its headwaters and smaller tributaries are characterised by clear to blackwater streams running over sandy or rocky substrates through gallery forest. These systems are typically warm (75–82 °F), soft, and acidic, with pH often in the range of 5.5 to 6.5 and very low conductivity where blackwater influence dominates.

Astyanax serratus almost certainly inhabits the shallow, vegetated margins and mid-water of such streams, as is typical for small schooling Astyanax — areas where forest canopy shade, fallen leaf litter, and submerged root masses provide both cover and invertebrate food sources. The Xingu drainage as a whole is recognised as a major centre of ichthyological endemism; the presence of a distinct Astyanax species in a single tributary system is consistent with the high rates of micro-endemism documented across the basin. Water conditions in the Cristalino system suggest a fish well adapted to soft, oxygen-rich, low-mineral water.

Feeding

As with the great majority of small Astyanax, Astyanax serratus is most likely an opportunistic omnivore feeding across the water column. Small Amazonian Astyanax generally consume a combination of small aquatic invertebrates (larvae of chironomids, ephemeropterans, and other insects), terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface, zooplankton, algae, and fine organic detritus — the mix shifting seasonally as forest flooding and rainfall alter food availability.

The multi-cuspidate teeth that define the species are consistent with an omnivorous diet, capable of processing both invertebrate prey and plant or algal material. No published dietary study specific to A. serratus was available in the sources consulted; dietary inferences here follow the well-documented foraging ecology of small sympatric and ecologically comparable Astyanax from the Xingu and adjacent drainages. In aquarium conditions, fish of this type readily accept fine-grade flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and cyclops.

Mating

Astyanax serratus has not been specifically studied with respect to reproductive behaviour, but the reproductive guild of small Astyanax is well established across the genus: these are egg-scattering open spawners with no parental care, closely following the generalised characin reproductive mode. In seasonally flooded Amazonian systems, spawning is typically triggered by rising water levels at the onset of the wet season, when flooding of forest margins greatly expands available microhabitat and food supply for larvae.

Male Astyanax often pursue females actively in open water, with spawning occurring in short bursts in which eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the water column or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation and submerged roots. No territory is established, no nest is built, and the adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning. In the aquarium, males in good condition may display mildly intensified colour or increased activity in the presence of receptive females, but the species lacks the elaborate courtship displays of more derived characins.

Breeding

No captive-breeding account specific to Astyanax serratus has been published. The general breeding protocol for small, schooling Astyanax is straightforward and well-documented for related species: a conditioned group of adults is introduced to a bare-bottomed or mop-furnished spawning tank with slightly acidic, soft, warm water (around 79 °F), and eggs are scattered adhesively among the spawning medium or fall to the substrate. Eggs are small and relatively clear; adhesion to plants or synthetic mops is common, though some eggs settle freely.

Because adults will consume eggs on sight, the spawning medium or substrate should be removed to a separate rearing vessel as soon as spawning is observed, or the adults transferred away. Incubation at 79 °F typically runs 24 to 48 hours for Astyanax eggs generally, with larvae becoming free-swimming within a further two to three days once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry diets, followed quickly by newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid in well-fed fry. These details are generalised from the genus; specific data for A. serratus remain unpublished.

In the aquarium

Astyanax serratus is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; it is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist Brazilian exports or scientific collections. That said, the husbandry principles for small Astyanax are well known, and any specimens that did enter the hobby would be cared for much as other small, schooling Amazonian tetras.

A group of six or more individuals in a moderately sized aquarium (23.5 in or longer) with soft, acidic to slightly acidic water, warm temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F, and a planted or leaf-litter environment would suit the species well. Driftwood, dried leaves, and subdued lighting reproduce the tannin-stained conditions of its native Xingu tributaries and tend to bring out the best condition and colour in blackwater-adapted tetras. Peaceful tankmates of similar size — other small characins, dwarf cichlids, corydoras — are appropriate. The species is not aggressive and should not be housed with fin-nipping or predatory fish. Good filtration with gentle flow and regular small water changes are more important than chasing exact parameter numbers.

Conservation

Astyanax serratus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). This is common for the hundreds of Astyanax species described in recent decades — the genus has expanded rapidly through taxonomic revision, and formal assessments have not kept pace with species descriptions.

The Xingu River basin, however, is the subject of significant conservation concern. The construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex on the main Xingu stem and the ongoing pressure of deforestation and alluvial gold mining in the upper basin have altered water quality, sediment loads, and seasonal flood dynamics in ways that affect fish communities throughout the drainage. Species with restricted ranges — a single tributary system, a single habitat type — are particularly vulnerable to such basin-scale changes. For A. serratus, confined to the record of the Cristalino River at the time of its description, any significant degradation of that stream system could affect its entire known range. Formal conservation assessment would be a useful first step toward understanding its status.
