Astyanax siapae is a small characin from the Casiquiare–Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, described by Válter Garutti in 2003 alongside the revalidation of a related species. Reaching close to 3.5 in standard length, it inhabits the soft, slightly acidic black- and clear-water tributaries of one of South America's most biodiverse river systems. Though little known in the aquarium hobby compared with more colourful congeners, it carries the ecological and taxonomic interest of a modestly sized Astyanax occupying a remote stretch of Venezuelan lowland forest.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax siapae was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Válter Garutti in 2003 in a paper published in Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (the journal of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo). The same paper revalidated Astyanax rupununi Fowler, 1914, and erected two new species; A. siapae was one of those novelties. The full bibliographic reference is: Garutti, V. (2003). Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, is one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae and spans an enormous range from Texas and Mexico through Central America and across virtually all of tropical South America. The valid name as accepted by global authorities including Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax siapae Garutti, 2003; as the author is not parenthetical, the species has always been placed in Astyanax and has not been moved since its description.

Morphology

Astyanax siapae is a moderately sized member of the genus, reaching a recorded maximum standard length of 3.5 in. Like other characins in the genus it has a laterally compressed, fusiform body, a terminal mouth, and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins — the hallmark of the family Characidae. The caudal fin is forked. A small but complete lateral line runs along the flank, and the overall scale pattern is typical of the genus.

The common name 'Redtail Astyanax' recorded in GBIF data suggests colour in the caudal region — a diffuse reddish or orange wash on the tail is seen in various Astyanax species — but morphological details from the original description are not reproduced in the secondary sources available; the diagnostic characters used by Garutti (2003) to distinguish A. siapae from its congeners are set out in the original Portuguese-language paper.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Casiquiare–Orinoco basin of Venezuela. The Casiquiare canal is the natural waterway that links the Orinoco and Amazon drainages, one of the most extraordinary hydrological features of South America, and its surrounding lowland forest streams are characterised by soft, darkly stained blackwater and clearwater conditions typical of Amazonian and Guiana Shield tributaries.

Water conditions in Orinoco basin tributaries of this region typically fall in the range of pH 4.5–7.0, hardness 2–8 °dH, and temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), reflecting the low-mineral, often humic waters draining the ancient Guiana Shield. Astyanax species in this system are benthopelagic — moving through the lower and mid water column — in rivers, streams, and flooded forest margins.

Feeding

Members of the genus Astyanax are generalised omnivores across their wide range. They take a mix of small invertebrates, insect larvae, surface insects, and plant material including algae and fruit. Astyanax from Orinoco-system tributaries are no exception, foraging opportunistically in a habitat that undergoes marked seasonal variation in water level and food availability linked to the Orinoco flood pulse.

In an aquarium setting, Astyanax species readily accept a varied diet of good-quality flake and small pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Vegetable matter or spirulina-enriched foods round out the diet and reflect the omnivorous feeding ecology of wild populations.

Mating

Astyanax siapae is an egg-scattering characin; like the vast majority of the genus and family it practices no parental care. Males likely pursue females with increased activity and lateral displays during spawning events, as is typical of Astyanax. Spawning is triggered by suitable water conditions and often by the onset of the rainy season in the wild, when rising water temperatures and flooding vegetation provide cues.

Fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, and leaf litter serve as the spawning substrate in natural settings, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs shed in small batches among vegetation. In the genus broadly, spawning groups rather than isolated pairs are the norm in wild aggregations, and multiple males may court a single female.

Breeding

Specific breeding accounts for Astyanax siapae in captivity are not documented in available sources, and the species is not yet established in the ornamental trade. General husbandry for Orinoco-drainage Astyanax applies: conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, then providing a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, soft slightly acidic water, and subdued lighting can induce spawning.

Eggs are adhesive and hatch in 24–48 hours at typical tropical temperatures. Fry are tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults must be removed after spawning to prevent predation on the eggs. No parental care is provided at any stage.

In the aquarium

Astyanax siapae is not widely available in the aquarium trade and is primarily a species of ichthyological interest rather than a common hobbyist fish. For anyone who obtains it, husbandry follows the template for Orinoco-drainage tetras: a soft, slightly acidic water with pH in the range of 5.5–7.0, temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), and low hardness replicates the species' natural conditions.

As a moderately sized, active schooling characin it benefits from a planted aquarium of at least 35.5–47 in length with open swimming space and some cover. Groups of six or more are recommended to allow natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Tankmates should be of comparable size and temperament — other Orinoco-region tetras, peaceful corydoras, and small loricariids are appropriate. Good filtration and regular water changes maintain the water quality this species expects in its native soft-water streams.

Conservation

Astyanax siapae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment, carried out on 8 November 2020 by Taphorn, Mojica, Rodríguez-Olarte, Villa-Navarro, and Usma (published in IUCN Red List version 2021-2), reflects the species' occurrence across an adequate range in the Casiquiare–Orinoco basin and a stable population trend. No major range-wide threats have been identified that would qualify the species for a higher threat category.

The Orinoco basin as a whole faces increasing pressures from deforestation, agricultural run-off, artisanal and industrial mining (particularly gold and coltan extraction in Venezuelan and Colombian headwaters), and dam development. The Casiquiare region's remoteness has so far buffered many of its fish communities from the most intense anthropogenic pressures, but long-term population monitoring of lesser-known Astyanax species like A. siapae remains limited.
