Astyanax stilbe was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 as Tetragonopterus stilbe, with the type locality given in Pará, Brazil — an attribution that likely places it in the vicinity of Belém or the surrounding lower Amazon drainage. Cope's description is brief, and the species has attracted little subsequent systematic attention. Its current placement in Astyanax reflects the broad, historically catch-all application of that genus to small New World characins, though the boundaries of Astyanax itself remain contested among characid systematists.
The IUCN assessment notes that A. stilbe is a poorly known nominal species embedded within the Astyanax bimaculatus species complex — a diverse assemblage of species that share overlapping meristic and morphological characters, making species limits difficult to draw. Until dedicated revisionary work addresses the complex, the validity of A. stilbe as a species distinct from its congeners cannot be confirmed. FishBase places A. stilbe in the family Acestrorhamphidae in its classification of American characiform fishes, reflecting ongoing debate over the circumscription of Characidae sensu stricto; the name Tetragonopterus stilbe Cope, 1870 is recorded as the original combination.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Astyanax stilbe are sparse — no standard-length measurement is captured in available records, and the species has not been illustrated in any widely accessible reference. As a member of the A. bimaculatus group, it can be inferred to be a small, laterally compressed, silvery tetra with the group's characteristic body form: a rounded snout, a terminal mouth, a single dorsal fin, and an adipose fin posterior to it.
The most distinctive character noted in Cope's original description, and reflected in the species epithet, is the silver lateral band described as 'very distinct.' In Astyanax, a bright horizontal stripe or band running along the mid-body toward the caudal peduncle is a common feature, but the degree of development and contrast varies. Without a modern redescription with meristic and morphometric data, nothing more precise can be offered without risk of fabrication.
Habitat
Astyanax stilbe is recorded from the lower Amazon basin and, according to FishBase, from the Atrato River basin. The Atrato drains into the Caribbean coast of Colombia, which would represent a notable disjunct range; the IUCN assessment, however, restricts known occurrence to Pará state, Brazil, and considers the overall distribution data insufficient to map. The discrepancy likely reflects historical taxonomic uncertainty and the difficulty of confirming identifications within the bimaculatus complex without voucher material.
In terms of ecology, FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic, freshwater, and tropical — a general summary consistent with the broad habitat use typical of Astyanax across the Amazon basin. These small tetras commonly occupy slow-moving to moderately flowing lowland rivers, flooded forest margins, and secondary channels, but no field data specific to A. stilbe are available to confirm habitat preference or microhabitat use.
Feeding
No diet data specific to Astyanax stilbe have been published. Breeding has not been documented for Astyanax stilbe in either the wild or captivity. By analogy with well-studied members of the A. bimaculatus group and the broader genus, it is expected to be an egg-scattering species producing semi-adhesive or non-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or into the water column. No parental care is offered; adults will consume eggs opportunistically.
In captivity, small Astyanax are typically not difficult to induce to spawn once conditioned on a varied, protein-rich diet, with spawning most readily triggered by a water change mimicking the onset of rains. Fry are usually small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food before graduating to baby brine shrimp. These are inferences from the genus, not documented observations for this species.
In the aquarium
Astyanax stilbe is not known in the ornamental fish trade and is unlikely to be encountered by aquarists in the near term. Even if it were available, its identity within the A. bimaculatus complex would be difficult to confirm without genetic or meristic analysis, as multiple members of the group are similar in appearance and are frequently misidentified in the hobby under catch-all names such as 'banded tetra' or 'silver tetra.'
If correctly identified material were to become available, husbandry would be expected to follow the pattern of other small Astyanax: a community-sized aquarium (from around 23.5–31.5 in), soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater in the 75–82 °F range, neutral to slightly acid pH, and a school of at least six to reduce stress and suppress fin-nipping. A well-planted tank with open swimming space suits the genus well. Any report of this species in trade should be treated with appropriate scepticism absent confirmed identification.
Conservation
Astyanax stilbe is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 based on work completed in March 2021. The DD listing reflects two compounding uncertainties: a lack of distributional and population data, and taxonomic ambiguity that makes it unclear whether A. stilbe represents a valid, distinct species at all. Until revisionary systematic work resolves its standing within the A. bimaculatus complex, a threat assessment cannot be reliably made.
Pará state, the known source locality, encompasses a vast and ecologically varied tract of the Amazon basin, parts of which face ongoing deforestation, river modification, and pollution from agricultural and mining activity. Whether any of these pressures directly affect populations referable to A. stilbe is unknown. The IUCN assessors note that taxonomic research is the priority need; conservation action cannot be usefully targeted at a nominal species whose range and population status are uncharacterised.
