Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax superbus was described by the American ichthyologist George Sprague Myers in 1942. The type material originates from Venezuela; a specimen of 3 in standard length from the Guache River at Garabote, Portuguesa state, is documented in the literature and represents the species in museum collections. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name Astyanax superbus Myers, 1942; the specific epithet is the Latin adjective superbus, meaning magnificent or superb, applied in the original description to distinguish this form from congeners.
The species falls within the Astyanax orthodus species-group, a complex of Venezuelan and Colombian characids that has been the subject of revisionary work. Astyanax is among the most species-rich genera in the Characidae and in Neotropical freshwater ichthyology generally, with well over 100 valid species spread across Mexico, Central America, and South America. That breadth makes species-level identification within the genus technically demanding, and many described taxa remain undersampled. FishBase records the family as Characidae (American tetras); the genus name derives from Astyanax, a figure in Greek mythology — the son of Hector of Troy.
Morphology
Astyanax superbus is a slender, laterally compressed characid of modest size. The type specimen measures 3 in standard length, suggesting the species reaches at least that size, though data on maximum adult length across wild populations remain sparse. Like most Astyanax it has the standard characid body plan: a fusiform profile, a forked tail, the characteristic adipose fin, and a relatively deep body compared with pencilfish or headstanders.
Beyond the type specimen measurements, detailed published descriptions of coloration and meristic counts for A. superbus are limited in the open literature. As with many mid-sized Astyanax, the species is likely silvery overall with a dark caudal spot and a lateral band of variable intensity — the basic Astyanax ground plan — but the precise pattern that warranted the epithet superbus is not yet widely documented in accessible secondary sources. Data on live coloration, scale counts, and fin-ray formulae await a modern revisionary treatment of the broader orthodus complex.
Habitat
The species is known from the Portuguesa River basin in Portuguesa state, Venezuela. The Portuguesa is a major left-bank tributary of the Apure River, itself a southern tributary of the Orinoco; the drainage lies in the western Llanos, a mosaic of seasonally flooded savanna and gallery forest. FishBase categorises A. superbus as a freshwater benthopelagic species, indicating it uses both the mid-water column and areas near the substrate in rivers and associated water bodies.
The tropical Llanos environment imposes a strongly seasonal hydrology. During the wet season (roughly May through October) floodwaters spread across vast areas, connecting rivers to lakes, lagoons, and flooded grasslands. The dry season contracts fish into main channels and isolated pools, concentrating populations. Water conditions in the Portuguesa system are typical of Orinoco tributaries in this region: warm temperatures (likely 75–82 °F year-round), near-neutral to mildly acidic pH, and moderate conductivity influenced by both the nutrient-rich Llanos soils and seasonal dilution. Mating
No published account of mating behaviour specific to Astyanax superbus has been located. Reproductive ecology in Astyanax generally follows the typical characid pattern of broadcast egg-scattering with no parental care. Breeding
Astyanax superbus has not been reported in captive breeding programmes and no aquarium husbandry literature documents its reproduction in detail. By analogy with congeners that have been bred in aquaria, the species almost certainly follows the standard small-characid reproductive template: eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or open substrate, small adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs without filaments, and incubation times of roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with the fry becoming free-swimming within a few days.
Parental care is absent, as in virtually all Astyanax. Fry would be expected to be small at hatching and to require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. The strongly seasonal Llanos hydrology suggests a wet-season spawning peak in the wild, though captive fish held under stable conditions often lose strict seasonality and can spawn opportunistically. Data sparse; claims beyond genus-level analogy would be speculative.
In the aquarium
Astyanax superbus does not appear in the mainstream aquarium hobby and is not currently offered through ornamental fish trade channels. It carries no widely used common name and has no dedicated husbandry profile in accessible hobbyist literature, including the Seriously Fish database, which returned no results for this species.
If encountered, care would likely follow the template for similarly sized mid-water Astyanax from Orinoco tributaries: a spacious tank with soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water; temperature in the low- to mid-20s Celsius; good filtration and some surface movement; a school of six or more to support normal social behaviour; and a varied diet of quality dry, frozen, and live foods. As with any species from the seasonally dynamic Llanos, some flexibility in water parameters is probable. In the absence of direct captive-keeping data, these are working inferences from related species and general Llanos characid ecology.
Conservation
Astyanax superbus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 9 October 2020 and published in 2021. The evaluation was conducted by Mojica, Rodríguez-Olarte, Taphorn, DoNascimiento, Usma, and Herrera-Collazos — a team of Neotropical freshwater fish specialists. The Least Concern designation reflects the absence of evidence for population decline rapid enough to meet threatened thresholds, and the species' occurrence within the broadly intact Portuguesa River drainage.
FishBase records high resilience for the species — a parameter reflecting the capacity to recover from fishing or other pressure — and low fishing vulnerability (10 out of 100). These figures are consistent with a small, short-lived omnivorous tetra rather than a large predator. The Portuguesa basin and the broader Venezuelan Llanos face ongoing pressures from agriculture, water extraction, and sedimentation; while these threaten many freshwater species regionally, A. superbus is not currently considered at elevated risk. Continued baseline survey work in the Portuguesa drainage would improve confidence in the assessment.
