Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax tamiahua was established by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto in 2017 as one of nine new species described in a major revision of the genus Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) across Central and North America, published in the Journal of Natural History. The revision disentangled species previously lumped within the highly variable A. aeneus complex, revealing that morphologically similar populations across Mexico and Central America represent distinct lineages separable by quantitative body measurements and osteological characters.
The valid name follows Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes: Astyanax tamiahua Schmitter-Soto, 2017. The species is placed in Astyanax, the largest characid genus, which in its current circumscription encompasses both sighted surface-dwelling forms and the celebrated blind cave populations of Mexico. A. tamiahua is a surface species with normal eyes and pigmentation, belonging to the cis-Andean, lowland-Mexico component of the genus rather than to the cave-adapted or Central American radiations.
Morphology
Astyanax tamiahua reaches a maximum recorded size of 2.5 in standard length. It is distinguished within the A. aeneus complex primarily by a suite of proportional characters: body depth averages around 35.9% of standard length, producing a noticeably deeper body than many sympatric or allopatric relatives; head length exceeds 26% SL; the supraoccipital bone is slightly concave in profile; and the second infraorbital bone (infraorbital II) is triangular with an angled base, a character visible under magnification.
Like most Astyanax, the species carries the typical characid plan: a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, forked caudal fin, and the prominent dark caudal peduncle spot characteristic of many members of the genus. Coloration in life is silvery with a faint lateral band and the usual dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin; it is not a particularly ornamented species, and accurate identification requires morphometric comparison rather than field marks alone.
Habitat
Astyanax tamiahua is endemic to Mexico, recorded from the Tamiahua Lagoon system and associated freshwater drainages in the state of Veracruz. The Tamiahua Lagoon is a large coastal lagoon separated from the Gulf of Mexico by a barrier island; the species inhabits the freshwater tributaries and associated lowland streams that drain into this system rather than the brackish lagoon itself.
The IUCN assessment documents the species as benthopelagic — inhabiting the water column close to the substrate as well as open water — in tropical freshwater habitats typical of the lowland Gulf slope of Mexico: slow to moderately flowing, warm, often turbid lowland streams and marshes with soft or muddy substrates. The restricted coastal distribution, limited to a single lagoon catchment, makes the species highly sensitive to habitat change anywhere within that small range.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study specific to Astyanax tamiahua has been published. Like other members of the A. aeneus complex inhabiting lowland Mexican streams, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore feeding on small invertebrates, aquatic insects and their larvae, plant material, and organic detritus available in its turbid lowland habitat.
Benthopelagic Astyanax in similar habitats across Mexico tend to exploit both surface and bottom food resources opportunistically, shifting with season and availability. In the aquarium, species of this complex are undemanding and accept quality dried foods, small live and frozen invertebrates, and plant-based supplementary feeding without difficulty.
Mating
No observations of courtship behaviour specific to Astyanax tamiahua have been published. Members of the A. aeneus complex are egg-scatterers that do not form pair bonds; males congregate near receptive females and pursue them actively, releasing sperm as the female broadcasts eggs among fine-leaved plants or other submerged structure. There is no parental investment beyond the act of spawning.
Courtship in Astyanax is generally brief and non-elaborate compared with substrate-guarding cichlids or nest-building species. The lack of visible sexual dimorphism in most forms means that sex is difficult to determine externally except during the breeding season, when ripe females become noticeably fuller-bodied. Spawning typically occurs in warmer months when water temperatures rise, though in tropical lowland species the seasonal signal may be subdued relative to higher-latitude relatives.
Breeding
Astyanax tamiahua has not been documented in captive breeding programmes, and detailed reproductive data specific to this species are lacking. Based on the biology of the A. aeneus complex, the species is expected to be a typical egg-scattering characid: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, and receive no parental care whatsoever. Adults readily consume their own eggs and must be separated after spawning if fry survival is a priority.
The small body size — under 2.5 in SL at maximum — suggests a modest clutch size relative to larger Astyanax. Fry of small Astyanax species begin free-swimming within a few days of hatching and initially require fine live food such as infusoria or rotifers before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth to juvenile size is relatively rapid under good conditions.
In the aquarium
Astyanax tamiahua is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and is not a species that hobbyists are likely to encounter for purchase. Its closest relatives in the A. aeneus complex (including Astyanax aeneus itself, sometimes sold as the "Banded Astyanax" or simply as a feeder characid) give a reasonable approximation of its likely aquarium requirements: a robust, undemanding small tetra suited to a tropical community aquarium of 23.5 in or more, kept in groups, and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.
The lowland Gulf-slope provenance suggests a preference for warmer temperatures and some tolerance of harder, more alkaline water than the Amazonian tetras most hobbyists are familiar with. A varied diet of quality dried foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates would meet its nutritional needs. Given the species' Vulnerable conservation status and restricted wild range, collection for the trade would be inadvisable; any specimens reaching hobbyists should be confirmed as captive-bred.
Conservation
Astyanax tamiahua is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(i,iii), reflecting its limited extent of occurrence and documented decline in area of occupancy and habitat quality within its small range. The assessment, conducted as part of the 2020 evaluation of Mexican freshwater fishes by Lyons and colleagues, places it among the many narrow endemics of the Gulf slope that face pressure from agricultural runoff, wetland drainage, and water extraction affecting lowland Veracruz drainages.
The restricted range — a single lagoon catchment — leaves no buffer: degradation of Tamiahua's feeder streams affects the entire known wild population. As a newly described species (2017), it lacks detailed population monitoring, and its true distributional limits and population size remain incompletely known. Formal protected-area coverage of its habitat and targeted freshwater surveys to define its range more precisely would be the most useful immediate conservation steps.
