Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax tarpon was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912 under the name Genycharax tarpon, with the type locality given as Cartago, Colombia, in the upper Cauca River basin. Subsequent systematic revisions relocated the species within Acestrorhamphinae before recent molecular work by Melo et al. (2024) placed it in the broad genus Astyanax as currently constituted. The Catalog of Fishes at the California Academy of Sciences records the valid name as Astyanax tarpon (Eigenmann, 1912); the parenthetical authority reflects the transfer from the original genus.
The genus Astyanax is one of the most species-rich genera in Characidae and indeed in freshwater fish globally, spanning much of Latin America from Mexico to Patagonia. The Acestrorhamphinae placement used by FishBase until recently treated tarpon and its allies as a morphologically distinctive group within the broader characid radiation of South America. Under any arrangement, the species remains an upper Cauca endemic with no confirmed populations elsewhere.
Morphology
Astyanax tarpon is a notably large species within Astyanax, with FishBase recording a maximum of 7 in standard length — substantially larger than the majority of its congeners. The body is elongate and fusiform, reflecting the benthopelagic lifestyle reported for the species, and the overall gestalt is more torpedo-like than the deep-bodied form associated with many ornamental tetras.
Detailed morphological data in the primary literature are sparse for this species. In the aquarium
Astyanax tarpon is not found in the aquarium hobby and is not commercially available. Its restricted endemic range, Vulnerable IUCN status, apparent rarity in the field, and large adult size (close to 7 in SL) all work against it becoming a trade species. No captive husbandry records are available.
Aquarists interested in the upper Cauca ichthyofauna are best directed toward other, more accessible and less threatened species. If the species is ever assessed as a candidate for ex-situ conservation programmes, its benthopelagic habits and large size would require a spacious setup with moderate flow and good oxygenation consistent with an Andean river environment.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Astyanax tarpon as Vulnerable (VU B1ab(iii)) on 10 October 2014. The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence of approximately 13,186 mi² combined with occurrence at only 6–9 locations and a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. The primary threats identified are mining activity, pesticide pollution, industrial waste discharge, and agricultural runoff within the upper Cauca basin — a heavily modified watershed that has experienced decades of intensive land use.
Of particular concern is that no field records of the species have been reported since 2008, raising the possibility that the situation is worse than the 2014 assessment captured. The population trend is listed as unknown. The species is used for subsistence consumption within its range, adding a direct harvest pressure to the habitat-degradation threats.
