Astyanax tehuacanensis is a small, cave-system-adjacent characin described in 2017 from the Río Salado drainage south of Tehuacán in the state of Puebla, central Mexico — the same Tehuacán–Cuicatlán valley whose extraordinarily dry scrubland was later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reaching around 3 in standard length, it closely resembles the widespread Astyanax aeneus but is separated by a distinct meristic profile: fewer anal fin rays, a shorter head, and a narrower interorbital width. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable (VU D2), reflecting its highly restricted range in a single river system threatened by water extraction and habitat loss.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax tehuacanensis was described by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto in 2017 as part of a comprehensive revision of the genus Astyanax across Central and North America, a work that diagnosed nine new species from material that had previously been assigned to the variable, wide-ranging A. aeneus complex. The type locality is the Río Salado south of Tehuacán, Puebla, Mexico — a Gulf of Mexico versant drainage in the semi-arid Tehuacán basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Astyanax tehuacanensis Schmitter-Soto, 2017 as the valid name; because the species was described directly in Astyanax and has not been moved, no parenthetical authority is used.

Astyanax is the largest characin genus in North and Central America and one of the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing more than 150 recognised species. It is perhaps best known globally for the cave-adapted populations of A. mexicanus, whose blind, depigmented morphs have been a model system in evolutionary developmental biology. A. tehuacanensis belongs to the surface-dwelling, pigmented majority and sits closest to the A. aeneus species-group in morphological terms, separated from that widespread species by a suite of modestly but consistently different measurements and meristic counts.

Morphology

Astyanax tehuacanensis reaches a maximum recorded size of 3 in standard length (SL). The body plan is the typical Astyanax shape: moderately compressed laterally, with a bluntly rounded snout, a terminal mouth, and the characteristic single dorsal fin and the elongated anal fin of the Characidae. FishBase records 9 dorsal soft rays and 18–23 anal soft rays, with vertebral counts of 32–33.

The species is distinguished from its nearest relative, A. aeneus, by a combination of meristic and morphometric features. The mean anal fin ray count is below 24 (versus a mean above 24 in A. aeneus), the head is proportionally shorter (mean 21.9% of SL), the snout is shorter (mean 3.3% of SL), and the interorbital width is narrower (mean 8% of SL). In life, coloration follows the general pattern of the A. aeneus group: a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe running from behind the opercle to the caudal peduncle and terminating in a dark caudal spot, overlaid with the iridescent sheen common to characins in clear tropical water.

Habitat

The species is known exclusively from the Río Salado drainage south of Tehuacán, Puebla, a tributary of the Gulf of Mexico versant in the semi-arid Tehuacán–Cuicatlán basin of central Mexico. This is a geographically and hydrologically isolated river system in a landscape dominated by dry tropical scrub, columnar cacti, and agave — one of the most biodiverse dryland ecosystems in the Americas. The river runs through an area with significant human settlement, and sections of the watercourse are accessible and subject to ongoing agricultural and domestic water demand.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater, benthopelagic, and tropical. The restricted watershed — a single named river system — defines both the ecology and the conservation vulnerability of the species: there is no wider distributional safety net. Water conditions in this semi-arid drainage are likely subject to strong seasonal fluctuation in flow, temperature, and solute concentration, typical of rivers in rain-shadow landscapes of central Mexico.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 2.9 for A. tehuacanensis, placing it among the low-level omnivores typical of the genus. The diet of Astyanax species in comparable Mexican drainages broadly comprises aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects and plant material that fall onto the water surface, filamentous algae, and fine organic detritus — the generalist omnivory that underlies the group's ecological success across a wide range of riverine habitats.

No published dietary study specific to this species is available in the cache; the trophic level figure and the broader genus data support characterising it as a benthopelagic opportunistic omnivore that forages across the water column and at the surface. In captivity, Astyanax of this size class accept fine flake foods, small pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and chironomid larvae without difficulty.

Mating

Astyanax tehuacanensis has not been studied in a dedicated reproductive field study, but the broader biology of the genus is well established. Like other Astyanax and most characins, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. In seasonally variable Mexican river systems, reproductive activity in Astyanax species typically peaks in the rainy season — spring into summer — when rising water temperatures, increased discharge, and improved food availability act as spawning triggers.

Males in breeding condition may briefly pursue females, and spawning involves adhesive eggs deposited among submerged vegetation, leaf litter, or fine substrate. There is no territory defence, no nest construction, and no care of eggs or larvae; the adults scatter and the eggs are left to develop. This reproductive mode, shared across hundreds of characin species, yields relatively small, individually lightly yolked eggs that hatch quickly in warm water.

Breeding

Captive breeding of A. tehuacanensis specifically has not been documented in the available literature, though the husbandry principles established for A. aeneus and related Central American Astyanax apply by reasonable analogy. Egg-scattering characins of this size are generally straightforward to spawn when conditioned on varied live and frozen foods: a slight drop in water temperature followed by a water change often induces spawning, and pairs or groups will scatter small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a spawning mop.

Eggs are abandoned immediately after fertilisation and hatch within 24–48 hours at typical tropical temperatures. The tiny larvae are initially adhesive and hang from the spawning medium; once free-swimming, they require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial fry powder before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Adults will consume eggs and fry if not separated, so the spawning medium or eggs should be removed to a dedicated rearing vessel. Given the species' restricted wild range and Vulnerable conservation status, any captive maintenance warrants careful record-keeping.

In the aquarium

Astyanax tehuacanensis is essentially absent from the mainstream ornamental fish trade; it is a newly described, range-restricted endemic that has not entered commercial collection or captive breeding on any meaningful scale. Aquarists holding this species are likely to be specialists working with Mexican endemic fishes or researchers engaged in ex-situ conservation programmes.

Care requirements can be extrapolated from the genus and from the species' semi-arid, seasonally fluctuating home drainage. A. aeneus and its relatives are robust, adaptable fish that tolerate a moderate range of water conditions; A. tehuacanensis from the drier, more mineralised Tehuacán basin may prove similarly resilient. A well-filtered tank with open swimming space, some cover in the form of plants or driftwood, and a diet of flake, pellets, and frozen invertebrates should sustain the species. As with all narrowly endemic fishes, provenance documentation is essential: specimens should be verifiably captive-bred or acquired through authorised channels, not wild-caught from the already-threatened Río Salado population.

Conservation

Astyanax tehuacanensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 10 September 2018. The D2 criterion reflects a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations, such that a plausible future threat could drive the species to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a very short time. In this case the threat is straightforward: the entire known range is a single river system, the Río Salado south of Tehuacán, in a semi-arid watershed under ongoing agricultural and domestic water demand.

The IUCN Mexico freshwater fish assessment identifies habitat loss and water extraction as the primary threats. Segments of the Río Salado run through inhabited and cultivated areas, and the highly seasonal rainfall pattern of the Tehuacán basin means that low-flow periods already concentrate fish in reduced refugia; any further reduction in discharge or increase in abstraction threatens to eliminate those refugia entirely. The SHOAL conservation priority list includes the species among freshwater fish of concern, consistent with the narrow-endemic, single-drainage profile that places it at inherent risk from any localised catastrophic event. No targeted conservation programme specific to this species is documented in the available literature, and its negligible presence in captivity means that ex-situ insurance populations do not currently exist at meaningful scale.
