Astyanax totae is a small, slender characin from the headwater streams of the upper rio Iguaçu basin in Paraná, Brazil, where it darts through clear, cool water shaded by araucaria forest. Known from only two localities roughly 124 mi apart along the river's middle and upper sections, it was described in 2005 and is one of several Astyanax species endemic to the distinct ichthyofauna of the Iguaçu drainage. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern, noting its high population resilience and the absence of identified current threats.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax totae was described by C.F. Ferreira Haluch and V. Abilhoa in 2005 as a new characid species from the upper rio Iguaçu basin of southeastern Brazil, published in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 3, number 3). The type locality is Riacho Cascata, a tributary of the rio Tortuoso in Balsa Nova municipality, Paraná state. A second population roughly 124 mi to the west has been recorded from the Jangada River near General Carneiro, also in Paraná.

The genus Astyanax is one of the most species-rich genera of Neotropical characins and is distributed from the southwestern United States through Central America and across virtually all of South America. Many Iguaçu-basin Astyanax are morphologically similar to one another and to species elsewhere in the genus, and the species boundaries within the complex continue to be resolved as museum collections and genetic methods improve. The valid name, as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Astyanax totae Ferreira Haluch & Abilhoa, 2005.

Morphology

Astyanax totae reaches up to about 3 in standard length. Like most members of the genus it is a moderately slender, laterally compressed fish with the typical characin body plan: a rounded snout, a terminal mouth bearing small teeth, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

Diagnostically, A. totae is characterised by a vertically elongated humeral spot (a dark blotch behind the gill cover) and a midlateral dark stripe running along the flank toward the caudal peduncle. The upper jaw (maxilla) typically carries two to five teeth, most commonly three. The anal fin has 15 to 18 branched rays. These meristic and colour-pattern characters, taken together, distinguish it from other Astyanax present in the Iguaçu system, though expert examination of preserved specimens is required for confident identification among congeners.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the upper and middle portions of the rio Iguaçu drainage in Paraná, Brazil — one of the most biogeographically distinct river systems in South America, separated from the Paraná main stem above Iguaçu Falls. The known localities are small headwater and mid-order streams flowing through araucaria (Paraná pine) forest, a globally threatened subtropical forest type of the southern Brazilian Highlands.

Streams occupied by A. totae are clear, with light to moderate current and substrates of rock, gravel, and sand interspersed with leaf litter and woody debris. The araucaria forest canopy provides dense shade and a continuous rain of terrestrial invertebrates and organic material that subsidises the drift-feeding community. Water temperatures in these elevated southern subtropical streams are relatively cool for a Brazilian freshwater fish, and dissolved oxygen is high.

Feeding

Stomach-content analysis (n = 15 specimens) conducted during ecological studies of the Iguaçu fish community revealed a generalist diet composed of microcrustaceans (Cladocera and Copepoda), chironomid larvae, adult insects, and plant fragments. The species is primarily a drift-feeder, intercepting items carried downstream by the current, and supplements this with terrestrial inputs from the surrounding leaf litter and riparian zone.

This feeding strategy is common among small Astyanax in forested headwater streams and reflects the high dependence of these fish communities on allochthonous — forest-derived — organic inputs. Studies on diet flexibility in A. totae and congeners confirm that it employs a generalist approach that facilitates resource-sharing with other species in the same assemblage, with dietary composition shifting seasonally as the availability of different invertebrate groups changes.

Mating

No detailed courtship studies have been published specifically for Astyanax totae. Based on reproductive biology documented across the genus and the IUCN's note of typical characin egg-scattering behaviour without parental care, males likely pursue ripe females through vegetation or over the substrate, with spawning occurring in brief, energetic pairings.

Like most Astyanax, spawning probably coincides with periods of elevated water temperature and flow in the spring and summer of the Southern Hemisphere, when the araucaria forest streams warm slightly and rainfall increases. The species' high resilience index — with an estimated minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — is consistent with multiple spawning events per season or a broad reproductive season, which is characteristic of small characins in productive stream habitats.

Breeding

Astyanax totae reproduces in the manner typical of the genus: open egg-scattering over submerged vegetation, fine substrate, or leaf debris, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs and no parental care. Adults show no reported nest-building or brood-guarding behaviour; eggs and larvae are vulnerable to predation, including by conspecifics.

No aquarium breeding accounts specific to A. totae are documented in the available literature, and the species is rarely if ever available in the ornamental trade. By analogy with the many related small Astyanax that have been bred in captivity, a pair or small group conditioned on live and frozen foods and given fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop would likely spawn in a well-maintained aquarium without difficulty. Eggs would hatch within a few days at typical temperatures, and the tiny fry would require infusoria or similar micro-foods initially before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Astyanax totae is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. Its restricted range, modest size, and unremarkable coloration relative to more commercially attractive characins mean that it has not been collected or bred for the hobby. Aquarists with an interest in keeping it would be unlikely to find it available outside specialist scientific or conservation contexts.

Biologically, it would be straightforward to accommodate: a schooling omnivore of modest size (under 4 in), it would suit a tank of 31.5 in or more in length, with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its southern Brazilian stream origin, gentle to moderate current, and ample cover in the form of driftwood and plants. It would coexist easily with other small, peaceful fish of similar water-chemistry requirements. Its value to the hobby lies more in the ecological story it carries — the endemic fish of the vanishing araucaria forest streams — than in visual spectacle.

Conservation

Astyanax totae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022). The assessment notes the species' high population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time estimated at less than 15 months, and its low fishing vulnerability. No current major threats were identified at the time of assessment.

Nevertheless, the species' known range is small — two localities about 124 mi apart in the upper and middle Iguaçu — and it is dependent on the intact araucaria forest streams of Paraná, a habitat type that has been severely reduced by agricultural expansion, afforestation with exotic pines and eucalypts, and hydroelectric development across southern Brazil. The long-term stability of the Least Concern designation depends on the continued protection of the riparian and araucaria forest zones within its range. The broader Iguaçu ichthyofauna contains numerous endemic species, and the health of the drainage as a whole is a matter of active concern among freshwater conservation biologists in Brazil.
